Does the so-called Dutch keyboard layout even exist? I always have to switch to US-international

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@JoSuus It's essentially the US key layout with an ISO shape.

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@JoSuus Unless that was rhetoric, in that case, didn't mean to bother.

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@JoSuus Yeah, it takes some time getting used to but in the end it's all about muscle memory.

I preferred the ANSI layout myself until I switched to something very different.

Also, you might want to look at US international, with altgr deadkeys, it's essentially the same as US-int, but the deadkeys only activate when you hold AltGr. Which made my life a lot better as I loathe the deadkeys while programming.

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@JoSuus Finding that layout heavily improved my life. I loathed deadkeys, as I type accents less than plain symbols.

Anyone using Postgres for blob storage? Any thoughts? I might have zips of files I need to put somewhere. I can do S3, but I am wondering if using Postgres Large Object might be ok?

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@janl @Patricia

I've had decent success with it, but that was not at scale, what made you regret it?

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@janl @Patricia

The ops part I can see, although I can think of some workarounds. To be fair, most of the time I've not used databases for binary storage either, except the few times it was logistically much more annoying to give access to binary data in other ways, so can't say I tried it a lot in 25 years.

It is so fucking insidious how Facebook in particular has tricked business owners into thinking a Facebook page or Instagram is a proper substitution for an actual website. There is a crochet designer I love, but she is ONLY on Meta products, which means I CANNOT SEE YOU BECAUSE I DO NOT GO THERE.

Fucking leaving money on the damned table because you refuse to make an actual site.

Bad business, that.

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@gerrit @TheJen @elmine

The problem with this reasoning is that everybody can reach the open web, me, you, that guy. Them developing a site doesn't mean they can't link to it from their facebook page.

So by your very reasoning, they are not where (all) their customers are, especially as FB is getting less and less popular amongst younger people.

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@gerrit @TheJen @elmine

But you can use a website everywhere. It doesn't exclude the FB crowd at all. So they will still be picked up.

ainmosni, to Samsung
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

Last Sunday, I wanted to watch some stuff on TV, but my #Samsung soundbar interrupted the sound every few minutes, and then reset its volume to pretty low. I was too tired to try and fix it then, but in the last week, I had a few sessions to try and fix it. I updated the firmware, and even installed their crappy app, nothing worked, and somehow I couldn't reset the thing either.

Today I did another attempt, and fixed it. How, you ask? Well, the problem had a very feline origin...

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

The soundbar is a flat surface, and the buttons are on the top. Samsung definitely didn't test this thing with people who have .

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

I was searching the web for all the weird symptoms, and as search engines suck these days, I mostly saw generic stuff about how to factory reset the device. Then I saw a page where someone had the exact same problems as me, and the reason was it being stuck in an undocumented store display mode. The person also added a button combination to get it out of there, and that worked perfectly here too.

So why did the problem have a feline origin?

18+ GoldenRetrieverGF, to StarTrek

So I want to say that the Borg are the perfect enemy for Starfleet because of how similar they are. The Borg have the goal of "We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us."

Does Data want to be Data or does he endeavor to become human because humans are the best? Who told him that? Picard? Kirk literally said in his Eulogy of Spock in Wrath of Kahn "Of my friend, I can only say this: of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most... human. ". A race he consistently tried to seperate himself from from both the Vulcan's and the Humans.

I personally see in the federation a neoliberal utopia that doesn't seek to respect cultural differences but rather to eradicate them and supplant them with "humanity". Like they heckle, harrass and discriminate against Vulcans and Klingons throughout every series. It's like the whole background of B'elenna in Voyager. Even Quark and Garak have a conversation in DS9.

Quark: It's [Root Beer ] so bubbly, cloying...and happy.
Garak: Just like the Federation.
Quark: And you know what's really frightening? If you drink enough of it, you begin to like it.
Garak: It's insidious.
Quark: Just like the Federation.

When they talk about the Federation, Earth is always what they are talking about. The founding members were Humans, Andorians and Vulcans. I really feel there are benefits to the federation. Erasing Economy, Defense, Curing disease etc etc all at the complete erasure of your country, culture and past to be supplanted with the glorious history of earth.

I get there are differences but the end goal of the Borg and the Federation are practically identical and they will use force if you resist. Maybe I sound like a Romulan or Cardassian propaganda artist but like ffs fam, this never read as a communist utopia to me but rather a white-washed neo-liberal one.

I think I think too much but the Borg are the perfect Foil for the Federation.

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@GoldenRetrieverGF Probably my favourite of the movies. That quote is a drop on a Trek podcast I listen to, which gets used when they say something containing the word "man" or "human".

Hey #Linux bubble, I wonder if someone can help me solve a small annoyance I have.

I work on a laptop that's almost always connected to its keyboard via a thunderbolt 3 hub. This works great, except that when I boot, I can't use my external keyboard to type in the decryption passphrase, and I have to awkwardly use the laptop keyboard.

Does anybody know how to force the keyboard to be initialised before the decryption prompt?

I'm running #Fedora 40 on a #Tuxedo laptop.

A friend recommended a newsletter for executives in tech and today's issue had a link to a blog post advising tech leaders on how to get better at asking questions. It had this... illustration...

I am confident the author had no idea how much this graphic torpedoed my trust in them. I am realizing that often people who use AI art don't understand how art works

@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

As my old NUC was showing its age, and didn't suffice for my #homelab needs anymore, I decided to build a new one. And because I prefer running all my #selfhosted in containers, but abhor fucking around with #docker and docker-compose, it's a single-node #k8s cluster, using #k3s, just like my old server. One big difference is that the new server has a decent amount of drives for storage. I decided to set up #zfs to manage that, and zfs is all it's cracked up to be.

#selfhosting

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@brokenminded That is still in my to-do list. I think I will fall back on using borg backup as I can't find a good service that accepts zfs volume snapshots.

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@brokenminded I tried velero years ago, and didn't like it. My current setup is all in git, so I really only need to backup my databases and volumes. The rest is already safe.

@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@xoxys The sync functionality not so much, but the restic functionality is interesting.

@Lalufu Yeah, borg/restic is my go-to as well, but I was just curious if syncoid could be a good alternative.
