Serious question: if Google starts serving up A.I..-generated answers that contain info scraped from the web, is it still protected by CDA 230?

At this point, it's no longer user-generated content, it's content Google is creating. So could a person sue Google for libel, for example?

annaleen,
@annaleen@wandering.shop avatar

@charliejane I think Google will try to argue that the AI is creating content, not Google, so therefore they still have their safe harbor. This is an active debate right now, growing out of questions around AI liability in autonomous car crashes, etc.

One of the many things I enjoy tremendously about Mastodon is the sheer mind-boggling variety of reactions to posts. If I post the sentence, "The dirt is very clumpy in my backyard today," people will discuss clumps, favorite backyards, climate change ... and then inevitably, somebody will eventually ask, "What is dirt?" I mean, it's not a bad question. Just not what I'd have expected.

@sarae this is why I love dirt!!! and don't even get me started on dust

A new kind of article that touts a magical new federated social media but completely overlooks the hits differently. https://www.newyorker.com/news/our-columnists/what-bluesky-tells-us-about-the-future-of-social-media

Here is my article about , the , and federalism for The Atlantic. I did NOT write the headline, which suggests the article is about Ben Franklin (never mentioned in the article) and Bluesky (mentioned a couple of times). LOL but I'm still really excited for you to read this!!! https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2023/05/social-media-centralism-fediverse/674041/

Oh what? Something went wrong with Sam Altman's grifty company Worldcoin, whose business model is to get people to stare into weirdass orbs and surrender their biometrics? https://techcrunch.com/2023/05/12/hackers-stole-passwords-of-worldcoin-orb-operators/?guccounter=1

For some reason I spent the morning digging into 10 year-old radical feminist debates online and learning about vampire castles and feeling very glad that I left academia.

@film_girl It's pretty internecine, but here's a good summary: https://emmacaterine.medium.com/aesthetic-politics-chapter-3-queering-the-vampire-castle-3709795c2d

The 2013 vampire castle essay is here, and it really has not held up well over the intervening decade: https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/opendemocracyuk/exiting-vampire-castle/

If you want a happy, wholesome story of a nerdy Black teen finding love in high school, you have to set aside everything and watch Anything's Possible (directed by Billie Porter!!!) right now. Streaming on Amzn Prime. It reminded me a lot of Heartstopper, and the outfits are off-the-charts amazing (again, Billie Porter). Doesn't shy away from real issues, but is committed to resolving them in a healthy way. I felt so much happier after watching it last night.

How Scholastic and other publishers who sell to K-12 schools are sanitizing stories, removing references to racism. This has been going on for a while, and Maggie Tokuda-Hall was the first author to step forward and call out the disturbing implications. (She also refused to let Scholastic remove the word "racism" from her story about Japanese internment camps.) https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/06/books/scholastic-book-racism-maggie-tokuda-hall.html

Based on two unscientific polls I conducted here, people's biggest fears about the future of the Fediverse are: 1) volunteer moderator burnout; 2) too much defederation causes fragmentation; 3) people are driven away by racism; and 4) Mastodon.social gets too big.

Here are the polls:

My theory about Bluesky is it's the methadone that's helping people kick Twitter.

People on Bluesky accuse Mastodon of being dull, boring, and full of annoying CWs. People on Mastodon accuse Bluesky of being a company spouting liberal decentralization propaganda whose code actually suggests they want to monetize their user base. Loving the future of the internet rn.

@annaleen@wandering.shop avatar

@seachanger I've seen folks talking about it in technical discussions of the AT Protocol.

annaleen,
@annaleen@wandering.shop avatar

@misc I am also feeling hopeful. I think that there will be a bridge between Bluesky and Mastodon, creating a larger Fediverse. People are always going to bitch about how "others" manage their servers. That's just humans. But at least we can have better moderation tools so we don't have to hear their complaints, or get harassed.

Fascinating and not terribly surprising discovery that people who bought blue checks on Twitter are mostly not harassers. https://techcrunch.com/2023/05/02/sex-workers-explain-why-blue-check-stigma-and-blocktheblue-arent-so-straightforward/
