@peregrine I’m hoping you can answer a question I’m having a hard time answering on the limited internet I’m on. In Phoenix, how would I create a link from one umbrella web app to another in the same umbrella? It seems like I might need to do something with the two Routers? I thought I might be able to do something using verified routes but it looks like you can only define one per controller?

I'd love to listen to a discussion from more senior devs about how they feel about leaving code in a broken state. E.g I started a large refactor of https://mastodon.cloud/@wolfadex/110409196985650566 2 Monday's ago and didn't pick it back up till last Friday, and felt fine doing so.

No commits between stopping on Monday and starting again on Friday. Just closed my laptop and walked away.

Is this normal? It wasn't always normal for me, but it's become more normal in the past ~4 years.

@wolfadex I do this, but what I’ll usually do is leave a todo comment about where I was in the thought process and then put something like “asdf” under it so if I forget and try to compile it’ll send me to my comment.

discovered a new type of guy last night

  • uses a tiling window manager on x (i assume also a shitty unreadable bitmap font)
  • passionately hates wayland
  • does not seem to have the slightest clue what wayland actually is

really top tier kind of guy i think. willing to write paragraphs of arguments that can be dismissed by googling “wayland tiling wm”

Show me your electronics project you think about every week but never gets the priority. Mine is a smart freezer that freezes deeper when electricty is cheap. It gets the price per kWh per hour of the day and selects the cheapest 6 hours, and slowly warms up rest of the day.

@bmac Within the last couple of years I’ve started to label boxes for specific things (USB cables, power cables, etc) and anything that doesn’t fit in those is overflow. Seems to be working pretty well until I just decide to upgrade one to a bigger box…

In the beginning, code for production looks very different from code to teach a concept. This is hard for experienced engineers to understand. They often want more complexity in early examples.

The solution is to have more steps in the learning path and evolve to complexity.

@bphogan Completely agree! When I was writing my tutorials for DO they would all start with a basic concept and then evolve that to the final, complex concept over the course of the tutorial.

Microsoft has announced that they're ceasing production of mice and keyboards. Although I don't use one currently, I love the Microsoft Natural Keyboard 4000.

I thought maybe I should pick up 3 or 4 and store them in a closet.

Of course, the speculators got there first. Average price on Amazon is now $400.

    Not sure I like the return expression in a rust function not needing a semicolon terminator.

    I mean, I'm an F# fan so ideally I'd like no semicolon expression terminators, but this mix of "use ; unless it's the return expressoin" feels awkward?

    @anathema I agree; it felt really weird to me as well. The way I ended up defining it in my head is "semicolon is a statement terminator, so if I want a value to 'fall through' I don't terminate the statement."

    @anathema Yeah, if you make a function that returns bool and end it with a statement that evaluates to a bool but ends with a semicolon the compiler will tell you () is an invalid value.

    Can anyone explain why the AT Protocol (used by bluesky) is bad other than being created by a free-speech absolutist crypto bro?

    I was looking over it yesterday, and the account portability of it seemed exciting. It was difficult when I moved my account on Mastodon between instances.

    If the protocol is completely unencumbered it seems like a step forward?

    @wolfadex Jack Dorsey is on the board, so I include him. With as big of a crypto and "free speech" zealot as he is, I'm worried the protocol has some kind of hidden backdoor to things I don't support.

    I want to like it, though. If I can get ActivityPub with better (transparent) migrations between instances I think it would be big.
