So because I apparently NEED another keyboard, I got a Mini with the optical linear red switches after touching one in Paris.

(I love my Topre but it can get a bit tiring after a long coding session. Also, I’ve always wanted a 60%)

Anyway, great little , crappy proprietary Windows-only software. Used my Windows test machine to map Shift to Hypershift which makes the arrow keys usable.

Then, in , had to press Fn+menu until the correct profile kicked in.

Remember “Open APIs?” How Tim O’Reilly told us they were how we would build the “open web” in “Web 2.0?”

Turns out an Open API is open in the sense that a gate owned by someone else is open. In that it can just as easily be closed and locked at their whim.

Question for people who understand how US non-profits work - how normal is it to spend $247,000 on "CEO outsourced services" as an independent contractor?

Just poking around in https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/133444882

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@simon Hmm, it seems on the low side…

Mozilla’s CEO made $2,458,350 in 2018.

They’re a non-profit too, right?

🤔

@zoe @simon Ah, my simple little head gets confused easily by such complicated stuff.

The folks at Mozilla must be so smart to come up with such things.

Just moved Tap Monkey from GitHub to Codeberg.

What’s Tap Monkey? It’s a tap test runner that’s also a monkey, of course ;)

I remember once as a child a terrible thing happened in my family. At first, I didn’t know what it was but eavesdropping on the adults soon made it clear that my aunt had been arrested, for shoplifting. She stole food. A mother of four was stealing food. If you make poor people hungry, you make them, by default, criminals.

@NurseStacey The only change I’d make is to remove American from the last hashtag.

Coming soon to Kitten¹: the drumroll <kitten> tag

You’ll soon be able to specify common <head> attributes, the syntax highlighting theme, and which libraries to include (htmx, alpine, water) declaratively.

(You can still return an object from your routes or use the HEAD slot to add any custom code to the head of your pages. The advantage of the <kitten> tag method is you can use it in pages as well as in fragments/components.)

:kitten: 💕

¹ https://codeberg.org/kitten/app

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@raymondcamden Haha, if I only knew all it took was a <kitten> tag ;)

(I’ll merge into main tomorrow after I’ve had a chance to test a bit more thoroughly and document it.)

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@raymondcamden Haha, no worries; I know all about those queues :)

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@jimfl That’s a very good point, Jim, thanks.

As cute as it would be to have a <kitten> tag, those are all aspects of a rendered page so a generic <page> tag would be more semantic, and, like you said, not tie the API to the tool. (I‘ll make sure to enshrine this as a principle in the dev guide and also keep this it in mind if I end up implementing a global namespace.)

Will update it today.

Thanks again for the feedback. Very useful and much appreciated :)

stickers have arrived. They're looking great! :kitten: 🎉 Labelled the cat. And the bike. 😸 Thank you, @aral!

Hello friends, today we’re launching https://cooperative.computer !

It’s like dGaaS (De-Googling as a Service). Nextcloud files storage, contacts and calendar syncing and a Matrix account all for £3 per month.

  • No ads
  • No data mining
  • No BS

AND THAT’S NOT ALL! Don’t like it? Change it! Cooperative.computer will eventually be its own cooperative where the members decide how it’s run.

Come talk to us on Matrix today! Operators are standing-by. https://matrix.to/#/#general:cooperative.computer

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@autonomic @antanicus Congrats on the launch :)

Just added Water.css¹ support to Kitten².

Water is a CSS stylesheet for semantic HTML that’s responsive, has good typographical defaults, and light/dark mode support.

Useful for demos, teaching, and also as a good base stylesheet for your Small Web places.

Just add WATER (see what I did there?) to your libraries array in your pages.

privileged folks: if you think what is happening in America to queer people is horrible, please talk about it.

tell anyone who will listen. tell people who might not listen.

say it again and again, with different words, to different people. use the same words. please speak up.

you have almost nothing to lose by telling your friends and coworkers that you think it's awful and your voice matters more than you probably realize.

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@terraboop I’m so sorry everything’s shit. Sending you lots of love and solidarity from the Emerald Isle 💕

How have for migrants in the EU changed?

Our bulletin takes a look:

  • Stronger rights protection in some areas
  • Continued difficulties at EU borders, & in detention & reception centres

What’s happening in Turkey today is not some exotic oddity. It’s a forewarning of exactly what can (and is) happening in the West.

Does this timeline seem familiar?

  1. Neoliberals get elected. They fill their coffers while alienating a whole swath of society who they deem too far beneath them to matter.

  2. A religious fundamentalist arises who speaks to those marginalised people, telling them they’ve been wronged (they have) and that he will make it right.

  3. He gets elected.

  4. He stays.

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@jasper No great loss. 🤷‍♂️

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@ddlyh Let’s do a little experiment: under your real name (the one on your passport), reply to this with a post that insults both Erdoğan and Kılıçdaroğlu.

Then let’s get you a ticket to Turkey and see which one you get arrested for.

At that point you should have the same understanding I do about which is worse, even if the alternative isn’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination.

aral, to random
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

So this year I proactively decided to step outside my comfort zone and write up a few call tor proposals to mainstream developer conferences because I want to start talking to everyday devs about the Small Web. It’s been… an interesting experiment so far given I spent the decade and a half or so before Covid almost exclusively doing paid invited keynotes about the problem it seems odd folks are more likely to pay to hear about the problem than to learn about a potential solution for free.

Lucille Ball shrugging.

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@LynneJones Just keep trying in full knowledge that you can’t convince everyone and, really, your goal shouldn’t be convince anyone. If you tell them what you know and, with that knowledge, they still want you to keep working to convince them, I’d say just move on. Life’s too short.

Otherwise, keep doing what you’re doing. Protecting yourself is a good start…

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@LynneJones …And some of us are spending every day working on building alternatives. So, fingers crossed, maybe some of those will also have an impact in the future.

But that’s a long game and things won’t change overnight.
