So much light pollution from my neighbours

asj,
@asj@hachyderm.io avatar

@Extelec It's not too visible with my eyes, but I can see a faint glow. That photo was a 30 second exposure. Wish my neighbours would turn off their lights 😁

Our talk lineup has now been announced! See the list of talks and workshops for EMF 2024 here:

https://www.emfcamp.org/schedule/2024

If you have a ticket, you can favourite the talks you're interested in to help our automatic scheduler put them in the best slot.

@Extelec @emf I think village workshops will get listed later? Ours still say false in the "EMF Scheduled" column 😁

If you've ever found yourself missing the "good old days" of the , what is it that you miss? (Interpret "it" broadly: specific websites? types of activities? feelings? etc.) And approximately when were those good old days?

No wrong answers — I'm working on an article and wanted to get some outside thoughts.

random websites of people you'd stumble across while looking for information.

the time and energy they put into documenting a specific niche that interests them, on their own website.

"hand crafted" html, however ugly

the lack of adverts and focus on content quality, over style.

less css - letting the browser choose the fonts based on your preferences

web rings and hand craft lists of "my favourite sites" and "my friends" websites.

With gtk file chooser, I used to type a key on my keyboard and it would jump to the items starting with that character, but now it just does a search. I find this incredibly slow and kind of annoying. I want it to work like it used to, maybe I'm using the wrong search terms. Anyone have any ideas?

Is anyone at going to run a "Learn How To Solder For Idiots" session?

Because I am an idiot and I would like to solder (and unsolder) some things.

asj,
@asj@hachyderm.io avatar

@Edent We (at @nottinghack ) will be doing a simple badge workshop, or some other small soldering project. Undecided as of yet.

Managed to get interrupts working on the Uno R4. Turns out my ISR was taking too long. The code is very messy now, but the display updates so fast and doesn’t blink anymore 🥰

Video of a hacked railway departure board displaying train departures

The Railway Departure Board project is pretty much finished I think.

For the most part, it will display the latest message from the @nottinghack Discord. Every five minutes or so, it'll display the departure board from Nottingham Railway Station. It does a few other things, like show which doorbell is being rung.

Does anyone own a genuine rail departure display we could set up at the EMF exit gate showing trains from Ledbury station?

asj,
@asj@hachyderm.io avatar

@jonty Uhh currently working on it.

Ordered a PCB, not arrived yet so the final version isn't tested. With some API magic I'm sure it could display train departures.

Getting it off the ceiling and bringing it with us to EMF might be a challenge.

Anyone have a personal recommendation?

Boosts appreciated 😀

@Edent I have the older USB A version of this and it works with a Yubikey over NFC for GPG, PIV and I think WebAuthn in Chrome (or Firefox... can't remember which 😆)

Modern linux is apparently:

  • Attempt to update a snap package because it keeps complaining, but it fails so you have to reboot

  • Magically the snap package now updates for some reason

  • Start up all your applications again but Discord needs to update so you have to download a new tar.gz file and extract it.

  • Repeat tomorrow

Went to see the new library in Nottingham City Centre today. It's beautiful, glad they got that done before declaring bankruptcy....

Checking news stories about it, there's a helpful comment from someone called "brexiteer1", so we know we can value their opinion:

"A library..Very outdated. A waste of more money. No doubt will end up in smoke one day.There is the Internet now. "

Cool.

I was looking at cases earlier this week for keeping my keeb safe when I put it in backpack. Came across some reviews for the keyboard while doing so.

I like how people review the keyboard from a consumer perspective and give it like 2 stars because the control key is "in the wrong place", totally ignoring that it's a huge reason why people buy it, and why it's sort of niche compared to other keyboards

Dunno why this came into my head right now... 🤔

While cycling to the hackspace I noticed that there were two traffic lights bent over from cars crashing into them.

On the way home, I saw police cars surrounding a car which had just crashed into a different traffic light.

The sooner we copy off Wales and get 20mph roads everywhere, the better.
