Tomorrow, I'm hosting another roundtable.

What do you think the topic should be?

atomicpoet,

@rm4 Every first Wednesday of every month, at 8PM, I host a video roundtable where we talk about the state of the Fediverse.

atomicpoet,

@darnell I believe they're dropping it on Thursday, actually. But that's definitely something we should talk about.

atomicpoet,

@Legit_Spaghetti That's a good point, and worth discussing.

atomicpoet,

@ch0ccyra1n Very true!

@atomicpoet @skiptomyloulou has a screenshot of your toot trending at the top of the tag over on that foul site in case you haven't already heard.

atomicpoet,

@GreenFire @skiptomyloulou I can't look at Twitter because I don't have an account. Can you send me a screenshot of whatever it is that is trending?

  • atomicpoet,

@donniecash818 @marcelias Mostly yes. Calckey allows for full text search while Mastodon does not. However, search is constrained due to the nature of decentralization itself. It's not that searching the entirety of the Fediverse is impossible, it's that it's expensive.

    atomicpoet,

@AkaSci @marcelias Well, here's the deal: no big tech giant with deep pockets has stepped up to foot the bill for such a feature. Search is a pricey game, my friend, and without some serious investment, we can't expect a Google or Twitter-style search on the Fediverse. So for now, we gotta get creative!

It's Canada Day, a time I'm supposed to be spending with my family, and Elon has to pull his shenanigans today.

Happy that https://calckey.social, ’s flagship server, has re-opened for sign-ups.

It’s a fitting day since so many people are looking for a server right now.

Don’t forget that if you want to see more available Calckey servers, https://calckey.org has you covered too.

This is all the more remarkable considering that the flagship server, calckey.social, is currently invite-only.

@atomicpoet @kainoa I'd love one of them there invites on Calckey.social if they open up again.

    atomicpoet,

    @Wizard @kainoa Your invite code is LK9AZGVP.

Here’s your monthly reminder that I don’t code for .

I advise Calckey. I do informal community outreach for Calckey. I’m also one of Calckey’s biggest donators.

But a coder on the project, I am not.

    atomicpoet,

For all technical questions regarding ’s code, send your questions to @kainoa. They lead the Calckey dev team.

    People still talk about ?

I’ve been on for months, and it bores me. I barely ever use it. Rarely do I ever see anything worth reading.

    atomicpoet,

@ringslinger If it works for you, good. But it doesn’t do anything for me. Sorry that bothers you.

If wanted to mine your content to populate but didn’t want to federate their own content to the , they wouldn’t use ActivityPub for this purpose.

They would use RSS—which is enabled by default on most Mastodon servers.

In many ways, it would probably be easier for Meta to do this too.

    atomicpoet,

    @Christopher Yep! Zuckerberg hates Musk!

    atomicpoet,

@Christopher Yesterday, I wrote a preview of that fight in the style of Hunter S. Thompson:

Stop tagging me in hell threads. I don’t want to be in hell threads. There’s no bloody reason to tag 10+ people in a thread.

    atomicpoet,

@christo Well, it’s also the nature of these hell threads, which is to generate drama.

I believe "lobby" servers will be critical to countering the influence of Meta. These lobby servers would deliberately federate with Meta. Here's a further explanation on what I envision.

A large number of people are misinterpreting this post as “Chris is saying no privacy exists on the Internet”.

No, that’s not what I’m saying.

This is why it’s better to read whole threads before jumping in with errant conclusions before commenting.

What I am saying is that privacy on the Internet is often assumed where there is none, meaning: entities like Meta create the illusion of privacy—but it’s all smoke and mirrors. Even in this post I’m quoting, I believe that I’m making this quite obvious past the first sentence.

Privacy might exist on the Internet but I sure as hell wouldn’t be banking on Meta to be delivering it.

    RE: https://calckey.social/notes/9giqim6jb3oraq1y

    atomicpoet,

@jynersolives That’s no guarantee. There’s too many variables. “Followers only” and “mentioned people only” doesn’t guarantee you privacy, it just manages the visibility of posts in a feed. This is why there’s that big warning on the web version of Mastodon when you send a DM.

    atomicpoet, to mastodon

Others have said this. More and more, I think it's true: the Homeowners Association (HOA) culture on the Fediverse is hurting it.

Except, people who tend to push an HOA agenda don't even tend to be "homeowners". They don't code. They don't run servers. Many of them are recent arrivals to the Fediverse.

I don't bring that up to say that anyone's more or less important because they code or admin or have been active for awhile. But surely, if you're going to be a gatekeeper, you should have something to qualify you as the self-appointed enforcer of the HOA.

Usually, these self-appointed gatekeepers have never made any investment in this community. Instead, the HOA are outright hurting this community by being unwelcoming jackasses.

Just to give an example, why has soured on ? It's the HOA in action. And who's currently uttering death threats to server admins? It's the HOA. They are toxic, and everywhere they go, they spread toxicity.

The worst FUD about the Fediverse isn't even coming from the likes of Big Social or Bluesky or the Press. It's from the HOA.

Who's spreading fears about "embrace, extend, extinguish"? It's the HOA. Who's creating uncertainty about whether ActivityPub can survive a corporation's use of it? Again, it's the HOA. And who believes that the Fediverse will die because something happened without their approval? It's the HOA every time.

The HOA has no authority here. The Fediverse has no board meetings, never mind a board of directors. Their decision making power is a complete delusion, a total fabrication of their collective imagination.

To be blunt, I'm done with entertaining the HOA's bluster, speciousness, and pretensions.

From here on out, at least on spaces I have tangible power, I'm gatekeeping the gatekeepers.

The HOA has no home here!

    atomicpoet,

@redstone @oblomov Actually, I’m pro block. But I also believe it’s better to fight Meta by providing lobby servers for people who use Meta:

The above thread was in response to receiving death threats from certain folks. It went beyond overzealous complaining.
