Even with all the collaborative work tools available out there, we don't talk enough about the very sophisticated practice of 2-3 colleagues editing a draft together by texting chunks of the draft back and forth 😬

Is milk safe?

Just as "will a rogue AI kill us all?" is a more cinematic, but less important question than "what social/environmental problems is the drive for AI at all costs creating?"...

So too is "will a contaminated milkshake kill me, personally?" a much less important question than "what epidemiological problems is the drive for milk at all costs creating?"

Not milk safety, but milk ethics!

A cheese contest using blind taste tests was shaken when a plant-based blue cheese was set to win.

The contest first considered awarding joint winners (but only if the plant-based cheese won) and then changed the rules mid-contest to exclude the plant-based cheese entirely

Princeton preemptively announced that Gaza solidarity protesters would be arrested and banned from campus, then made good on this within minutes of the protest starting.

The university defends this as viewpoint-neutral "time/place/manner" restrictions, but this is ridiculous -- there's no precedent for this, even in the 2011 Occupy, 2015 BLM, and 2019 Title IX camps/occupations.

In the world of The Matrix, humanity's blacked out the sky to fight the robot uprising. This was of course terribly destructive, but nowhere near as idiotic as the implicit plan @charliejane sees in Silicon Valley's embrace of geoengineering -- blocking out the sun in order to hasten the robot uprising.

@jilleduffy
Thank you for writing this, it's such a beautiful exploration challenging how we think about growing older.

That there's no good literature on women's "midlife crisis" is an intentional omission, historically speaking - when Gail Sheehy coined the term she meant it to describe mid-century women reclaiming their autonomy after their kids moved out. But a bunch of chauvinist psychologists deliberately smeared Sheehy and appropriated her idea for men.

A hospital says a patient died… and it takes him years to correct the record; A new data tool promises to lighten workloads, but even more doctors & nurses burn out. What's going on here?

I reviewed Klaus Hoeyer's DATA PARADOXES for @hnet_reviews. It's a good book for STSers, but an even better book for anyone who's deciding whether and how to deploy data-collecting infrastructure, whether in medicine (Hoeyer's case) or any other domain
