#Climate threat not often discussed:
“Pound for pound, gallon for gallon, hour-for-hour, the two-stroke gas powered engines in leaf blowers and similar equipment are vastly the dirtiest and most polluting kind of machinery still in legal use.
“According to the California Air Resources Board (CARB), the two-stroke leaf blowers and similar equipment in the state produce more ozone pollution than all of California’s tens of millions of cars, combined.”
@asbestos@smach ~ I live in a senior mobile home park in a suburban setting. Everyday those puppies are cranking up. The noise pollution is incredible. I am awaiting July 1 with open arms. Be well
"The gods that we've made are exactly the gods you'd expect to be made by a species that's about half a chromosome away from being chimpanzee."
Christopher Hitchens
"Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity. Seek out argument and disputation for their own sake; the grave will supply plenty of time for silence. Suspect your own motives, and all excuses. Do not live for others any more than you would expect others to live for you.”
― Christopher Hitchens, Letters to a Young Contrarian
"We still talk in terms of conquest. We still haven't become mature enough to think of ourselves as only a tiny part of a vast and incredible universe. Man's attitude toward nature is today critically important simply because we have now acquired a fateful power to alter and destroy nature. But man is a part of nature, and his war against nature is inevitably a war against himself."
Rachel Carson
@Wen@TalktoBeverley ~ I did a short study there in 1978. I was also no where close and I have a backpack creed that I will not break. Take it in and carry it out, leave nothing but smiles. Be well. 💕
@mekkaokereke ~ Thank you for adding to the conversation. I had two classes of Angela Davis at UCSD and I was a Physics Student. She was an extraordinary presence. Be well 🙂 p.s. I boosted for coverage too.
Apparently it's now a thing for dinner party hosts to ask their guests for money to help with groceries. Eater reporter Amy McCarthy says that's not OK, and offers some suggestions for cutting costs if you want to host but can't afford to. What's your experience with this? Pick as many answers as apply and share any fun stories in the comments.
For the absolute first time in my life I'm not filled with surging emotions. Today is like a tabula rasa for me, and I'm hoping to build on it.
I've been stuck in autistic burnout since I was 8yo. The only hobby I ever had was picking through rolls of pennies to pull out the wheatbacks, for one summer as a preteen.
I really could use something to do that isn't computer based. I have books, but want something more active.
Okay, a little mystery also for today. After the Toxic Club, my
brother and I got a strawberry limeade at a little drive inn, and drove around this Conservation Area, but then we start seeing this fence with these signs, it's like 8 foot tall with lots of the fence totally blacked out, and these signs placed on them that say:
Saline Valley Ranch, No Hunting, No Trespassing
This fence went for miles, and miles had to be incredibly pricey to put in, it reminded me of the fence they'd have at a minimum security prison, but we didn't see cows, horses, crops, nothing but woods and hills and miles and miles of giant fence.
We try to find information about what it is, but there's basically nothing. My husband looks it up on Google Earth, and finds Little Saline Ranch, and I look it up, and it says permanently closed, and even less information is available about that. Google Earth shows lots of wooded land, a lake, and a few open fields, but we couldn't see any buildings or animals, nothing like that.
So, looking up that I find this article about mysterious happenings in the area:
It mentions several people seeing a Bigfoot type cryptid in the area, so obviously the fence is to keep it in. My other guesses involve a government blacksite, as it isn't too far from and airforce base, or a doomsday cult, what do you all think?
Truly and honestly, I have a great time here, because you all make it great. You boost, you reply, you encourage, and inspire! It is crazy to me that I get to talk to people from all over the world every day. I get to be friends with people I'll probably never actually get to physically meet. I was born into a pre-internet world, and this still feels a little like a miracle to me.
@RickiTarr ~ I agree. I am a refugee from Facebook and never felt the community I feel here. I have generous and valid help with my linux exploration and just some wonderful times. Be well 💕
@peterainbow@RickiTarr ~ I have used the Kubuntu version for over 15 years and just last year acquired a Ubuntu Desktop. I will not use Windows or Mac. I am not a programmer, but need some advice from time to time. Plenty of people to help you here. 🙂
