Nuclear historian at the Hiroshima Peace Institute. Book - Nuclear Bodies: The Global Hibakusha - Yale 2022. I work on the global human & ecological harm from nuclear production, nuclear weapon tests, reactor accidents. I examine the impacts on communities, families & emotions; long-term ecological presence of fallout radionuclides; the legacy of our nuclear waste to 1,000s of generations of our descendants.

Many who didn't grow up in the 60s may only know Tommy Smothers from this clip that opens the Who movie The Kids Are Alright (probably many don't know this either). Tommy played the straight person who was shocked by change, but he was the one who was a key to brining an awareness of change to a generation of little kids. Believe me, this whole schtick was his call.

Also, on Tommy Smothers' passing, your occasional reminder that well over a majority of Baby Boomers are women and people of color. It's always been about the haves and have nots. Generational antagonism is another misdirection.

When I was a working chef everyone used German knives. I remember when people started to include Japanese knives in their kit. Now, I swear by these amazing knives.

Winter solstice in Newgrange in Ireland. Newgrange is one more ancient passage monument aligned for the sun to traverse a long passage and illuminate an interior chamber on the winter solstice.

Thinking of it today, but also looking forward to visiting it again in early 2024.

@inquiline Not uncommon in Japan, but not nearly like in the US. Also, people here live in much smaller domiciles with almost no storage unless they live in a house in the country.

Press full of "giant breakthrough" articles about fusion at the NIF at Lawrence Livermore Lab (nuclear weapons facility).

What is the breakthrough? The first hint that you can actually make energy. No viable reactor, no actual technology, just a research finding of the hint of a start (that cost many billions already).

What is the NIF? "The NIF was designed not as a power plant, but as a facility to recreate and study the reactions that occur during thermonuclear detonations after the United States halted underground weapons testing in 1992."

So, more hype to up funding for nuclear weapons passed off as an energy "breakthrough" that, even if true, is decades from even coming into the potential for construction.

    But hype away military contractors!

The same is true for radionuclides, as residents of Simi Valley found out when radioactive particles from the Santa Susana nuclear meltdown of 1959 (of which they were unaware) were discovered after the Woolsey Fire of 2018:

@LaNaehForaday Thank you for letting me/us know that. It is horrible for people not to be informed of risks like this that affect themselves and their families. And for companies that have done such contamination to not have to remediate the sites and inform local residents to the event, but also continue to receive government contracts that continue to put more people at risk for decades.
