Needless to say, if I boost something into your timeline that contains something you disagree with, you should not be taking that as a licence to abuse the person who posted it.

@chrisjrn I seem to recall an admonition I read on Twitter which went something like "if you reply to someone I retweet, do not [intensifier profanity] embarrass me"

similarly, I would also prefer that those who follow my feed act with some decorum towards those I boost

brainwane,
@brainwane@social.coop avatar

@glyph oh interesting, I had forgotten "and insist on including me in the reply" -- I think I feel the same dismay whether or not the respondent explicitly mentions me

God I hate the act of getting a conversation out of Slack. Even just a 2 person one.

What the fuck happened to respecting text?

@Greg You have caused me to go revisit 'How to turn 🔒 Private Conversations into 🌳 Public Resources through 🤝 Community Consent' https://www.metafilter.com/197743/a-way-that-builds-more-trust-instead-of-tearing-it-down which is about the trust aspects of that sort of thing but not the copy-and-paste logistics

If for no other reason*, I support a mask requirement at #PyConUS because the kind of person who doesn’t attend because they’re required to mask is the kind of person who I don’t want to hang out with anyway.

(* and there are lots of other good reasons too)

brainwane,
@brainwane@social.coop avatar

@jacob Re: this year's PyCon US, https://pythonbytes.fm/episodes/transcript/384/force-push-lightly mentions acoustic problems on the expo floor.

And outside of PyCon, I've known people who deal with masking causing:

  • significant physical discomfort/pain when worn continuously for hours
  • inaudibility: the frequencies of this person's voice + mask muffling just make them inaudible to most people, in their experience

(People who don't know me: I wrote https://www.harihareswara.net/posts/2023/my-current-covid-risk-approach/ & I kept my N95 on even while speaking onstage at PyCon US.)

It's the last day of for me, spent in semi-isolatiion because of a scratchy throat and a COVID exposure.

I've tested non-positive two consecutive days though, so I have hope it's not the bad one. Still, not the way I want to end a PyCon.

First thoughts coming back from : Do you know anyone who works hard but is unrecognized in your community? Nominate them for stuff at the @thepsf ! Don't know what or how? I've written a README here:

brainwane,
@brainwane@social.coop avatar

@iqbalabd Thank you for writing this!

https://www.python.org/community/awards/psf-awards/ doesn't have any awards after late 2022, and doesn't mention the 3 awards you pointed to in the March 2024 board meeting https://www.python.org/psf/records/board/minutes/2024-03-13/#new-business . So maybe those recipients haven't accepted their awards yet?

Left from about 33 hrs ago. Had a scratchy throat this morning w/ a negative test and just now have a positive test.

I went out with various groups, unmasked, throughout the weekend. This was a risk I was willing to take. Still, I'm glad I was wearing a mask in the convention center around folks who did not choose to take that same risk.

I'm gonna go rest now.

brainwane,
@brainwane@social.coop avatar

@tylerdave Dave, I really appreciate you sharing this to help us all know more about our exposure and calibrate our choices accordingly. I have just taken an antigen test this evening (negative) and will test again a few times over the next few days, given the exposure.

I hope you have a full and quick recovery, and if you want some suggestions I may have some. Glad you are resting.

This new short fantasy story by @bpladek was so captivating. A compelling, closely-observed piece - I laughed aloud at:

'He tried to sound careless.... "Pretty sexist of me, too, right?"....

“Nah,” said Adrian, in the tone that meant, I hadn’t thought of it, but yes.'

I think this will resonate with a lot of readers who wrestle with questions about representation and OwnVoices in fiction.

It's weird and cryptic, but I have to share: I see that some people do some mostly-good things, and I suspect that some mostly-bad people are making them do them.

Some day I'll probably write a book about it. Or at least a draft blog post that I'll never publish.

In the meantime, I think that I won't ask the people who are doing the mostly-good things too many questions about it.

brainwane,
@brainwane@social.coop avatar

@aharoni I am, of course, incredibly curious.

    I asked my small biz customers to pay by check or e-check and many actually have! I have to invoice them separately so it’s tedious but the real ones are down. well, the real ones plus the lady from Texas who told me she was happy to start getting in the habit of paying for things by check due to the 15 minute city people eventually using credit cards to shut down commerce from longer distances 🤗

    @seachanger I am interested in possibly buying some shelf-stable salmon - https://schoolhousefish.com/shop/tongass-wild-alder-smoked-coho is intriguing! Is the label shown there the only label on the package? Or is there an additional nutritional label with estimated calories etc.? That would help me decide on order size. Thanks!
