Fellow #ADHD, #Autistic and #Disability folks, what are your thoughts on book summary apps like Blinkist and Headway?

I’m torn between feeling that it could be a good accessibility tool - but also notice a bit of ableist and allistic language in the advertising that puts me on guard.

Is it just me?

I think mine began circa 2007:

I worked at the Apple Store as a teacher and a customer purchased me an item as a gift because they appreciated my classes.

Wait for it:

My boss took their money, then after the customer left they took the item from me and placed it back on the shelf and said, “we are not allowed to receive gifts.”

Yeahhhhhhh, that actually happened.

I’m a big audiobook fan.

I always have struggled to read a book in its entirety although I absolutely love learning and studying (thanks #ADHD)

Now that I’ve been living with my diagnosis for a few years, I’ve gained great insights into how my mind functions and how to best accommodate my needs when it comes to learning.

I read short articles just fine… but for books, 90% of the time audio is the best format so I can multi task while listening to the story. Very stimulating for my brain. :)

The music coming out of the independent scene in the UK lately has me entirely blown away.

Fun Britt fact: I can play a lot of instruments and played in bands throughout my youth. I miss it. :) Good times. Good memories.

Sometimes... I wonder... as an adult without children... what it's like for my mom every time I have to tell her I also have the same (negative) genetic condition she has... or her sister has... or her mom had, etc.

Like... I would feel SO bad passing any of my crappy medical issues down to a kid (one of the reasons I'm childless).

Have you ever had to go through this? Have you ever thought about this? Or is my Autism just going for a ride... lol

Many of you may know that I have a very dear to me (nearly) 18 year old cat.

She’s got some medical issues at her age but we do everything we can to keep her happy.

It appears that her diabetes is suddenly unmanageable… which scares me a bit if I’m honest. The only times this has ever happened in the past was after a surgery/anesthesia and an infection.

We’re taking her to be seen by our new vet on Saturday. I really really hope they’ll be able to help.

TW: medical stuff, meds, anxiety

So… today is the first dose of my new med for Rheumatoid Arthritis (seropositive).

I’m nervous. This means that moving forward my immune system will be even more fragile. I’ll basically be on a weekly low dose chemo drug and … wait … to see if it helps.

I’m not asking for sympathies or anything like that - I simply want to document my journey and show that just because you’re young and ‘look’ healthy —- it doesn’t mean you’re healthy. #InvisibleDisability
