Excited to be here at CERN preparing to fire a blast of Higgs Tachyons into the solar eclipse in order to fulfill Revelations 6:94 and start the Rapture.

@brucelawson@vivaldi.net avatar

The machines are on, and we're filling centrifuges full of mRNA harvested from foetuses. With any luck, chemtrails will shift from pointing at CERN and point towards Armageddon to guide the Beast to His Dark Throne.

brucelawson,
@brucelawson@vivaldi.net avatar

Punctual as ever, at the exact time foretold by Nostradamus, we're delighted to welcome Bill Gates to CERN. He's brought a test tube full of Higgs' Tachyons from his facility on Epstein Island, harvested "from the seed of princes and kings", as Crowley described! We'll add those to the mix and fire them into the eclipse later.

@mattwilcox Doing my best but npm install rapture needs a different version of node so gotta sort out all my dependancies

My modest proposal: Failing water companies should go bankrupt, their investors lose everything, their boards and C-suites be fired, and the gov should buy them for £1 and run them as national utilities. Ditto the railways and privatised energy orgs that price-gouged us last 2 winters. Then every statue of Thatcher & her ideological allies should be melted down and turned into commemorative medals to celebrate the day we free ourselves of the stupidity that saw the nations' utilities and housing stock sold to profiteering wideboys.

Sometimes, if I’m fixing an unrelated bug I spot the opportunity to make a quick “drive-by” accessibility tweak that is quick and easy and will give a disproportionately big boost to the user experience for people with accessibility needs. Here are some of my top faves (number 3 will have you in tears!). https://brucelawson.co.uk/2024/drive-by-accessibility-tweaks/

Is it safe, or even useful, to upgrade from Ventura to Sonoma yet?

Here's a good question: what are your fave quick wins when refactoring, or just tweaking while fixing an unrelated bug? I like it when legacy codebases decided to hang styles off classes, so I can change <div class=nav> into a <nav class=nav> and make it much better for assistive tech users with no other changes required. https://mastodon.social/@timking/112203115458940448

Ditto changing <div class="header"> to <header class="header"> and adding <search> elements; a ton of bang for the buck. Could be more work, but replacing crappy JS faux-accordians with <details> and <summary> brings robust keyboard a11y to pages with little effort.

brucelawson,
@brucelawson@vivaldi.net avatar

And my last sneaky quick win involves adding tabindex="-1" to the target of in-page links. (A problem I thought had gone away with IE6, but no: https://www.tpgi.com/how-to-avoid-breaking-web-pages-for-keyboard-users/)

brucelawson,
@brucelawson@vivaldi.net avatar

@sarajw If it's any consolation, it was new to me too. I remembered doing it in the pre IE9 days, but until recently hadn't realised it was still a problem

Making myself happy by stripping out loads of JS and replacing it with declarative markup and modern CSS, which will work in modern (evergreen) browsers, and Safari too.

Just got the shock of my life - i was crossing the road and a car with Egyptian number plates beeped their horn at me, and an occupant showed their naked arse to me through the window. Bloody toot and car moon!

I saw this in the sky. I researched it thoroughly, and a YouTube video (by MAGAnoVaxUSA88) proves it's flying 5G mast spreading chemtrails and shooting vaccines, owned by Soros, flying Jeffrey Epstein's assassin to Bill Gates' secret lair in the icewall at the edges of the earth.

Mastodon q: in the 'advanced' Tweetdeck-style view, where does my 'Federated timeline' come from? Most of the people in it I've never heard of, and while I have no moral objection to the nude images of attractive women that some of the posts carry, they are distracting and a bit shit when in a public place.

Years ago, on my last visit to the "United" States, a Yank colleague said "if you want to understand us, remember we were founded by the religious fundamentalists you threw out. We worship ancestors who were slave-owning immigrants that took the land through genocide. The 'American dream' teaches us that poverty is a lifestyle choice caused by laziness."

I think about this often.

I was getting grumpy about all the JS flimflam needed to make a hamburger menu button trigger a pop-up menu thing, and then remembered that @keithamus dreamed up declarative <button invoketarget=""> and now I'm grumpy it's not in all the browsers already (soon, for modern ones) https://buttondown.email/cascade/archive/018-i-love-invokers-and-you-should-too/

Who's got a really good example of a form with accessible validation & error messages? I want to show a colleague how to assess forms with a screen reader and examples of good are much harder to find than examples of crap.
