“reconductoring” power lines in news, this paper has bunch of details

  • lines made of better conductors more $ but carry more amps
  • way faster to deploy lines on existing towers vs permitting new ones
  • really only helps up to 50 miles, other tech better for longer distances (high voltage DC, “sectionalizing” long lines)
  • traditional power lines get hot and sag (and cause fires)
  • insane mix of disincentives for utilities/ISO/RTOs to upgrade, but Fed policies helping

‘And really the COVID response was all-consuming in that first year. And what I kind of gingerly tiptoed around, I said
“This COVID response thing that we're doing: we're going to have to take a similar effort on climate for the rest of our lives." And that was not met with a dismissal.’ https://www.volts.wtf/p/getting-ready-for-ira-2

“So for the Cambridge method, the lime flux was swapped out for the recycled cement paste. And sure enough, not only was it able to purify the steel just fine, but if the leftover slag is cooled quickly in air, it becomes new Portland cement”

“The upshot is, if you adopt LLMs into your work flow, you are intentionally adopting a bullshit engine. Nothing that comes from an LLM should ever be trusted. There is no accountability for the inevitable errors and fabrications that they bring to your work.

If ChatGPT were an employee, you’d fire them almost immediately for fraud”

California’s solar deployment lets operators shift hydroelectric output to the evenings when it’s needed most:

“Lower midday usage of hydropower is highly desirable for the CAISO system as it allows for greater dispatch of hydropower resources during the hours without solar generation - a textbook complementary system... By reducing the need for midday hydropower, a significant portion of a given year’s available MWhs can be shifted towards more critical periods.”

Ms. Saldana, 64, was exasperated at the sustained outage, the fourth she has had to endure, after Hurricane Ike in 2008, Harvey in 2017 and the winter freeze in 2021.

“I’ve lived in this house for 38 years,” she said. “I am old. I don’t want to do it anymore.”

She said she thought about moving but was not sure where she would go. For now, she said she was taking cold showers and driving her car around the block with the cold air blasting.

“Thank God I have water.”

‘A Canadian politician has a modest proposal to her city’s drivers: pay a tax equivalent to the current cost of an annual bus pass to register their cars— the equivalent of $858 American dollars a year — or give up those cars altogether and take the bus for free’

“If we could wave a magic wand and double the network, take away the debt and make the bus free — oh my God, why would we not do that? That's an easy decision”

“I was pretty steady for the most part, but at the end we hit a strong current and the water got colder,” said Gubser. “My progress was slowed because I was chilled to the bone. I did not expect 43 degrees. That was nuts.”
