I know the Brits aren't very enthused by the idea of #nationalservice, but as an American I've always admired countries with the maturity and wherewithal to implement it. We couldn't even dip our toes into universal health care (ACA) without sparking a national anti-government rebellion.

catbuttes,
@catbuttes@freeradical.zone avatar

@figstick in my experience, the main demographic in favour of national service over here are the ones who where just a little too young to do it in the 50s. Oddly enough, they are all way too old to have to do it now and yet see it as a quick fix for “the youth of today”/underfunded services they rely on.

The folks who understand either of the “issues” driving the demands all seem to think it’s a shit idea that fixes nothing.

But the demands for it come from the main Tory voting demographic…

British transphobia has now reached the stage of coercing young people into detransitioning using the threat of referrals to social services if they access treatment through private providers. The Good Law Project is crowdfunding for a possible legal challenge: https://goodlawproject.org/crowdfunder/nhs-cyp-guidance/

Pop quiz: can you spot the problem in this PHP snippet? I just got tripped up by it and it was very Not Fun. (This is rewritten to be a minimal example.)

if ( $coolness > 10 ) {
define('COOL_MODE', true);
}

if ( COOL_MODE == true) {
echo 'You are cool.';
}

catbuttes,
@catbuttes@freeradical.zone avatar

@tomw I'm not a PHP person, but does it always define the COOL_MODE constant at startup, ignoring the conditional nature of the define?

@girlonthenet if you are very generous in your definition of 'play' I could probably just about manage Three Blind Mice...

cxiao, to threads

I did the requisite responsible reading about Threads federating, and I decided to domain block them after thinking about it.

  1. Anybody who wants to view my public posts can still view them.

  2. This is mostly an infosec account, and there's AFAIK zero infosec community presence on Threads.

  3. I'm not really interested in helping Threads grow an infosec community presence.

  4. I don't think there's any Mastodon admin ready for the network effects of several million users suddenly joining the network. There is shockingly little discussion about problems like coordinated inauthentic activity, which are going to come at that scale. I'm REALLY not interested in seeing or interacting in any way with chinese state disinformation campaigns lol

  5. Mastodon servers and clients are held together by duct tape and prayers by people in their spare time. Threads is held together by people paid full time salaries at a large multinational corporation. Threads can make a better fediverse app and a better fediverse server than anything that currently exists. I think any future where people start downloading the Threads app as their default client to interact with the fediverse, and where people start using threads.net as their default server, is one that is very dangerous for the existence of the fediverse as a set of interoperable clients and servers built on open standards. I'm doing my part to make this as unappealing and as high friction as possible 🫡

  6. fuck libs of tiktok, and fuck threads which is currently platforming them. The impact of accounts like Libs of TikTok on rolling back LGBTQ rights in the real world is a very good example of why network effects, discoverability, and social media amplification are dangerous.

Thanks to @jerry for letting people on this instance make this choice themselves. Having this kind of choice is a welcome change from other social networks.

catbuttes,
@catbuttes@freeradical.zone avatar

@cxiao @jerry Item 4 is what I can see killing Threads federation in a lot of cases. Meta do not have the will/ability to moderate to the standards expected in the Fediverse. I'm expecting it to be an utter shitshow until mods start domain blocking Threads to save their sanity. With any luck it will happen quickly enough that Threads never really gets missed when it is gone...

Hey

It is good that the BBC has set up an instance and plans to post to the fediverse.

If you're making vague threats to defederate the instance already, all you're doing in practice is pushing the future of social media back towards corporate platforms like Threads.

It's a litmus test of whether Mastodon/ActivityPub can chart a path towards mass adoption, or whether it wishes to aggressively keep out the 'normal' world and send them back to Zuckerberg and co.

catbuttes,

Tuktuks need to be more of a thing in the UK. Town is just too far to walk, the buses are not often enough or reliable enough and it seems a waste to drive the car. An electric tuktuk would be perfect for nipping to town and back with the kids and a little shopping…

    @neil I top post because otherwise I can guarantee I will get a response along the lines of “you forgot to reply”.

    That said, if I’m responding to multiple questions, I will do so inline with a short blurb at the top pointing out what I am doing. It’s the best way of making sure I hit every question and don’t just respond to one question in the email (usually the low ball easy one) and then not reply to the rest…

    On , there is a setting for unobtrusively notifying you if your connection to the server is lost. When using it on (PWA on iOS), I find this is really important.

    I used to find myself closing and reopening the app to reconnect. Now I can easily know when it happens because I see this little notice and then I can just click refresh.

    catbuttes,
    @catbuttes@freeradical.zone avatar

    @Jdreben You can also add a refresh button on the left side menu - which can be handy if you suspect that popup hasn't popped up when it should have (happened to me a few times)

    atomicpoet, to fediverse

    @tyler is a fork of . One feature of Misskey is the ability to show ads.

    Unlike Misskey, Calckey gives you the ability to opt out of ads if you don't like them.

    By the way, I don't know of any Calckey servers that show ads right now.

    catbuttes,
    @catbuttes@freeradical.zone avatar

    @atomicpoet @tyler I quite like the option of having the functionality there. It’s not something that needs to be used for advertising for products but could be used for public service announcement style campaigns.

    Things like the recent change in the UK to require ID when voting could be advertised on a UK focused server. Or a university based instance might want to warn people of disruptions on campus. Useful stuff that isn’t an announcement but people may benefit from seeing.
