An EU-wide has been adopted by the EU parliament with 584 votes in favour, 3 against and 14 abstentions. The directive now goes to the council and after it is officially published, member states have 24 months to implement it in national law.

I see all these retro game collections on YouTube, and they’re always the same. It’s the same consoles, accessories, and “hidden gems”.

And it is so boring. I don’t want to see another video about the Nintendo 64 – ever.

I do try to step away from those videos, find something off the beaten path, and it’s near impossible. There’s not a whole lot of people talking about retro PC gaming, and that’s the kind of stuff I actually want to see.

I don’t care if you pirate, but I’m not going to do it.

Steam, GOG.com, itch.io, and Epic Game Store is too convenient for me. It keep my catalogue stored in the cloud. I can store my screenshots. And it’s faster to buy and download than it is to hunt for a torrent.

I’m also 42-years-old, with a family, and I don’t want to deal with potential legal hassles.

Besides, I want more games so I pay developers to encourage them to make more of them.

@atomicpoet There's also potential security issues with software piracy, as you never really know for sure if a cracked game is just the game or if it includes malware.

@sarajw that's certainly true, but if I upload a file I think it's worth ensuring that the format remains the same, because if I want to download it and repost it elsewhere, I get a video, and other applications typically treat videos differently by not looping them, whereas animated GIFs are looped. Thus, there's two possible solutions in my view:

  1. Only display videos (since you're absolutely right that GIFs aren't exactly the most lean format), but allow users to download the original GIFs with the usual Right Click -> Save Image As (not sure how difficult this would be to implement)
  2. Just use the same file format that the original uploaded file is, even if the site will still compress it.

There may be some other solutions out there as well, but I'm not sure exactly what those would be.

Yesterday Vernissage for Pixelfed had its anniversary, and today I wanted to introduce a new app in the fediverse: Vernissage. It is a platform for photographers with photos at the center, with a clean and minimalist interface. The official instance is available here: https://vernissage.photos. I made a horrible mistake with my first game

So for context: I'm a programmer and I like the idea of not using a game engine, but I have no real prior experience with game development specifically.

I thought it was a good idea to make a text adventure game (think Zork) in C, since the language offers great portability, including the ability to run code on the 6502. Also a text adventure game made sense because I can't make art and idk anyone else who wanted to work on a game with me.

This was a terrible idea for a few reasons:

  1. A text adventure game is impossible to make with a small scope
  2. My from-scratch engine wasn't really designed with modifying the game data mid-development in mind
  3. I have no clue what I'm doing.

I just don't know what to do now. Any ideas? @gamedev
