I've achieved the level of baldness/receding hairline, where I have two options to avoid burning my pate: wear a hat; or slather on sunblock. 🙄

I need to remember this if I spend a day swimming! 🏊‍♂️

What a beautifully restored locomotive! BTW, the Reading & Northern line runs through Tunkhannock, PA... which is where I shop for groceries. 😀

Opened this up for the first time in ~6 years. I stopped playing completely when I left the Army in 2009.

I bought this in 1983, I think (with a little help from Mom & Dad). My first — and only — professional Horn. The detachable bell is in the top half of the case, out of sight. It's a Yamaha YHR-862: a big bore, big throated Kruspe wrapped Horn. Perfect for Concert Band or a large Orchestra (Mahler), when you need to project.

Beautiful, magnificent, and noble.

You could point out the Cello has a similar range, tone, sonority... but the Cello can't project the power that a brass instrument can. Because brass instruments are powered by human breath: there's more human soul there by the very nature of the instruments.

This is a fine performance. But the ex-military Horn player in me (US Army 1986-2009) needs to know the economics of performing after beats in the range of a perfect 5th (or even a 3rd for the lower parts) on a Horn that costs over $7k?

I learned to hate marches, forever.

Injustice has always been my flash anger trigger (for a lot of reasons & experience I'm not going to detail here).

But the older I get, the less apologetic and circumspect I become about expressing those opinions and heat. I guess rage can build slowly.

Many people don't understand why I chose to play the Horn... and particularly why I chose to try to make a career of it. Well, it started in grade school, at Miller Elementary School. We got to choose instruments in 4th grade. I chose Trumpet or Drums. They went alphabetically, and by the time they got to me (H)... Trumpets and Drums were gone.

Hmmm. Second day in a row where I'm up way too early, waiting for sunrise and breakfast.

Keep digging, keep pushing! Normality is what you make of it, I guess?

Only Benjamin Netanyahu could bring me to consider rooting for Iran. Consider what you have permanently(?) lost, Israel. Sympathy is gone. I hope you all enjoy the Gaza beach condos Jared Kushner will build (with Saudi money), on the skeletons of murdered Palestinians. Just my own observation: YMMV, of course... and I'll still try to respect that.

I’m almost to the point of adding a filter for any toots containing “The New York Times” or “NYT”. I cannot overemphasize how little I care about any and all opinions expressed there. They do not deserve any of my attention. (Same for Washington Post and Wall Street Journal.)

My second favorite piece featuring the Horn in Chamber Music (small ensembles). An older recording. Very good recording, despite using primitive recording technology.

Johannes Brahms, Horn trio, Eb major, Op. 40 - Recorded in London, 13 November 1933

Adolf Busch, violin
Aubrey Brain, horn (Dennis Brain's father)
Rudolf Serkin, piano

I. Andante (0:00)
II. Scherzo. Allegro (8:11)
III. Adagio mesto (15:11)
IV. Allegro con brio (23:30)

Oboe production. Quality musical instruments aren't cheap. Professional wind instruments are expensive, but nothing compared to professional (and historical) stringed instruments. Pipe organs, of course, are a separate entity, since they usually including an entire building. 😮

Another of those 1970s songs that still haunts me, and helped form me. Partly responsible for 11yo me becoming a hopeless romantic.

"Baby I'm a Want You" by David Gates & Bread (1972).

One of the things I'd love to see technology address, is providing automatic language translation, for both documents and particularly videos.

The language translation features of Mastodon work well, but I still find toots that don't have a "translate" link/button... especially Asian languages.

A: "The Defendant"

From a drummer friend on FB this afternoon. 😀
