Work in progress: a set of three olive utensils. This is all very hard scrap wood that's been hanging around for a year so there are definitely power tools involved. Last step is my favorite: a very close rubdown with cabinet scrapers, which leave a super-smooth tool-finished piece that can be oiled without any sanding at all because the scraper cuts the fibers instead of tearing them.

@luis_in_brief Good question. I look a look at the data (quickly).

India page views by country raking over the last few years according to Wikistats:
April 2016: #8
April 2017: #7
April 2018: #5
April 2019: #5
April 2020: #5
April 2021: #5
April 2022: #5
April 2023: #5

So pretty steady for the last few years.

"Get over yourself

"I don't understand why this is even a hard choice."

She’s right.

✨ It’s true. I’ve been working on this blog post for ten years.

You see, I’ve been slowly buying up nearly seventy super rare issues of a 80s/90s gadget catalog that meant the world to me growing up. And in the process, I’ve uncovered the secret history of this lost copywriting art.

PLUS, as a bonus, I’ve scanned every single issue — so you can read them all.

I hope you enjoy: https://cabel.com/2023/11/06/dak-and-the-golden-age-of-gadget-catalogs/

@cabel I love that you love doing this. Appreciate the dedication and for taking the time to share with us all!

Everyone, please read this! It’s fun and will change your day.

Interesting research on readers of becoming editors. "It is not a clear 'level-up' trajectory that takes Readers into becoming Editors. The current reality is that Readers consume content episodically and rarely level up; however, our interface and Product approach revolve around the Editor mental model and Editor-centric vocabulary, quite possibly trapping Reader potential that is currently limited to a narrow set of possibilities (namely, editing content)."

"Wikipedia does defy the natural order of things. First, there needed to be a self-organizing community of thousands of editors who took on the mission of writing objective truths about the world. And then, just as remarkably, their product – 6.7 million articles in English Wikipedia, alone – had to become broadly trusted and routinely circulated by Google search results."

I created the stub for the Wikipedia page on the fediverse (no thanks necessary, please send cash-money 😜):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse

Every time I log into Wikipedia, there's a bunch of notifications about other articles linking to the fediverse article. I logged in today - for the first time in quite a while - and saw a notifications bearing the legend;

> A link was made from ‪George Takei‬ to ‪Fediverse‬

As a Star Trek fanboi since childhood, this truly makes my heart glad : )

"But the assumption that news media are "reliable" neutral sources is a structural blindness, encoded deep in the DNA of the Wikipedia project."

Tell me more. How would you expect Wikipedia to work differently?

ckoerner,
@ckoerner@xoxo.zone avatar

@strypey Given the limited context of these three messages I was curious if “structural blindness” was a feature or a bug. :) Like, is this something that could be improved over say an inherent immutable thing. I agree with your response. It’s a frustrating limitation, especially with underrepresented culture and heritage (like oral traditions).
