It always cracks me up when people think is more difficult or complex than .
You have to use registry editors, group policy editors, and other special programs to administrate windows and it always blows windows admin minds when I show them you just need a text editor for Linux.
The reality is it’s not more complex, it’s actually simpler, it’s just not something you’re familiar with is all.
Spend a few weeks living in Linux you’ll be cursing windows.

claudius,
@claudius@darmstadt.social avatar

@chiefgyk3d as someone who has been using Linux for over 20 years, including over 10 years on my main laptop, I can say: Linux absolutely is more of a hassle day to day. Yes it comes with its own perks, but Windows is absolutely lower maintenance. Especially over the past five years with the issues I had to deal with from the switch to Wayland.

I have a pc running windows 11, I have not once used Regedit or PolEdit.

I don’t understand email. How do I know which email service to choose? Won’t I be stuck only communicating with people on the same server? How will people find me? What if I don’t like my service and have to change my email address? Or if my service goes out of business? Why do some email providers charge money and others are free? Will I get ads in my email? It’s all so confusing. Why don’t we all agree on one giant email server that we all use that is secure and benevolent and free?

claudius,
@claudius@darmstadt.social avatar

@Cdespinosa
I know this is supposed to be a joke, but have you talked to teenagers or young adults? None of them use email except when forced to.
@janl

claudius,
@claudius@darmstadt.social avatar

@janl @Cdespinosa In the end, I think, most of the reasons for email falling out of favour boil down to "not as easy to set up and use as something like a mobile messenger".

But if you know of different reasons I'd be interested what they could be?

claudius,
@claudius@darmstadt.social avatar

@janl It is certainly a factor, I don't disagree. But that's a "why not both" situation, I think.

E-Mail is hard for similar reasons that the fediverse is hard. Contact Discovery sucks. Choosing a service and setting it up on computers and phones sucks. On top of that, E-Mail is slower than instant messengers, you have to deal with spam and get little to no personal mail (because that is now pretty much exclusively WA or Signal) - you don't exactly have an incentive to regularly check E-Mail

I saw a stat from September 2023 saying that IE retains a 2.15% market share worldwide, which seemed absurdly high to me, so I did some digging and it seems like there must be one country that's a huge outlier in terms of numbers.

Here are the demographics for IE in October 2023:

US: 0.12%
Europe (avg): 0.12%
UK: 0.09%
France: 0.14%
Germany: 0.12%
NL: 0.15%
Aus: 0.07%
Japan: 0.45%
India: 0.55%
China: 0.87%
Russia: 0.21%

I wondered if it was SK but they dropped the gov stuff and have <0.1% now

@gsuberland
Maybe it was an "on our site" stat? Some websites may attract very specific audiences.

fun fact: Spotify doesn't play music at the exact correct tempo.

something about the way it streams audio results in the playback speed oscillating around ±0.2bpm from nominal. this is normally inaudible, but I noticed it while locking a beat grid onto a desktop video I'd recorded, then tried it again with other tracks and found the same behaviour.

claudius,
@claudius@darmstadt.social avatar

@gsuberland
Is this specific to Spotify? Or is this an artifact of the codec in general? This sounds so odd?

So. Three folks I follow are echoing pretty much the same sentiment I've been trying to express and are spending less time here.

I'll preface with a reminder that you may very well feel my opinions are bunk. I am a successful YouTuber, after all, with all the privileges that entails.

But here's the brass tacks: it's harder for me to be here comfortably than it was on the birdsite. And to be honest, I think Mastodon's always gonna be this way.

claudius,
@claudius@darmstadt.social avatar

@havn @ErikUden @TechConnectify @feditips I don't think anyone really cares where exactly they get solved.

  • Changing everyone's behaviour would do the trick (practically impossible)
  • Changing the client software would work (but would mean that you will need to do something like this fix in a few places, and/or that you will see different sets of posts in browser and on mobile)
  • Changing the server software would work, and would IMO have the benefit of not needing the first two to change.
claudius,
@claudius@darmstadt.social avatar

@ErikUden thank you for taking a look. @TechConnectify has posted about this very topic for the past day or two, and all of it is very enlightening for me. I am interested in moderation, but so far I was usually focused on the clear harrassment side of moderation. Not so much on how to manage a torrent of replies. Maybe that's not even moderation, i don't know. But it sure is a problem for large accounts.

claudius,
@claudius@darmstadt.social avatar

@havn @ErikUden @TechConnectify @feditips I also think that a change like this must always put the individual in a position of power over their own experience. If someone were to be able to say "filter my notifications in this specific way" that would be a win in my opinion. I would find an opaque, uncontrollable filter problematic of course.

    anyone know where I might be able to find spectral power distribution graphs for the separate emitters of common RGB LEDs? (e.g. WS28xx, SK6812, APA102, etc.)

    the datasheets list peak wavelengths, but I can't find the actual spectral power distribution graphs (intensity vs. wavelength).

    has anyone pointed a colorimeter or monitor calibrator at them and published the results?

    I do not believe @element / are mustache twirling bad guys. But I really think if they get the wrong, that there will be problematic consequences down the line. If they want to remain under AGPL (or a similar license), the CLA should reflect that. We can't know for sure until we see the actually legally binding text.
    Until then I would like to add: I usually do not contribute to projects that demand signing a CLA. I find the very idea to go against what should be.
