Offering bluesky invites here is kinda bullshit, right?

@tante I subscribe to and the amount of invites being requested and offered here every day is fascinating to me.

Is anyone still using glscopeclient (vs ngscopeclient) for anything? If so, what's holding you back? I'm running out of reasons to keep it around.

At the moment, spectrogram and waterfall rendering isn't implemented in ngscopeclient but once that's taken care of (hopefully not too far out) I'll be ready to pull the trigger and fully remove glscopeclient from the main branch of the repo. This will enable a bunch of build system cleanup since we'll be eliminating a lot of dependencies like GTK.

claudius,
@claudius@darmstadt.social avatar

@azonenberg I would love to give it a try, but I chickened out at "this section is out of date".

The markdown support can break some messages with a different layout. But the most problematic point comes from German speakers where different genders are separated by ending a word with a colon or an asterisk which results in a Markdown format.

What should we do in your opinion? Thank you.

claudius,
@claudius@darmstadt.social avatar

@apps the asterisk is also a common source of problems. Thing s like "Schüler*innen und Leherer*innen" gets replaced with the inner part in italics.

I'm super curious what people think of Markdown :akko_thonk:

Personally, I dislike it a lot, but I haven't found an alternative I prefer with wide-ish support yet.

claudius,
@claudius@darmstadt.social avatar

@amolith I did use wiki syntax and bbcode and a few other things. I still checked "haven't tried alternatives" because those were very limited and not really alternatives. I also can write fluent html, which could be considered an alternative, but is so much slower to write in most cases. In the end 95% MarkDown + 5% HTML works extremely well for me.

Why doesn't Apple make a TV? They would own that space. Half the people I know would happily buy one, if it meant no spyware, user choice, and never buying another "smart" TV again. Even if the cost was 2x normal smart tv.

claudius,
@claudius@darmstadt.social avatar

@briankrebs I have a great TV. It is very smart. It is also very offline, and it only receives content from a Raspberry Pi and a few other devices. I can't use half of the buttons on my remote, because they prompt me to accept some terms of services (which I don't find acceptable).

My TV is very smart.

What software do you use to manage your hackspace?
Like administrate members, administrate payments and all the stuff you have to deal with in your space?

@mcfly LibreOffice Calc sheet for members, GnuCash for accounting (hard to recommend, though. UI is really stuck in the 1990s)

LibreOffice Writer for correspondence, includung my sane serial letter (https://codeberg.org/Sane-Serial-Letter/Sane-Serial-Letter ) for mass mailings.

We’re in a deadly and disabling pandemic and 99% of people do absolutely nothing about it.

That includes many of the people reading this.

They’ll shrug and just continue to spread something that maims and kills, themselves and their “loved ones” included. Even though we have an extremely effective, cheap and readily available solution that does not interfere with their lives whatsoever: N95 (or better) masks.

How do you even begin to address a cognitive disconnect at such a huge scale?

claudius,
@claudius@darmstadt.social avatar

@thomasfuchs over the past few months, I visited three doctors (all routine checkups). It was pointed out to me, I could take off my mask. WHY WOULD THEY POINT THAT OUT?! As if there weren't sick or immunocompromised people literally lining up in the waiting room?

    We need to have a talk, and I’m having a really hard time having it with my awesome hacker friends, because everyone is super duper emotionally invested and is deeply hurt by it.

    I hope you all aren’t - because it involves all of us and it’s important. It’s not about any of y’all individually or your hard community work.

    The talk is about how to make all of our cybersecurity conferences and events and meetups more accessible and conformable for young hackers because I’mreallysosorry, we’ve somehow become Old, and the stuff that we are ingrained with as “hacker culture” like movies, music, and memes all were created before they were born - and they may or may not have any emotional attachment or enjoyment of them at all.

    That’s the conversation we need to have and that we are all responsible for and I swear it’s not aimed at any conference or person because we are all in this filter bubble of watching the Matrix and listening to Prodigy and remembering the hamster dance and all of that stuff while awesome was like a quarter century ago.

    Part of building a community is thinking about including everyone and their culture under a mantle of good ethics and goals. So we really, really need to start having a chat about when we lean on the 90s hacker aesthetic and memories to the exclusion of people under 30. I had a wake up call hearing some students complaining about it.

    claudius,
    @claudius@darmstadt.social avatar

    @hacks4pancakes not only that, but also: how to you empower younger people and give them room to explore and develop the community further? That's often a key ingredient that's missing. Onboarding young folks is fine and dandy, but when they want to change stuff, they get shut down. And that's not how this works.

    They will change the community. And it will be good. Even if we old farts don't get it right away.

    Tempolimit ist eine von sehr wenigen Maßnahmen, die wir sofort und ohne großen Aufwand machen könnten. Es gibt viele Argumente für ein Tempolimit, aber eigentlich nur "Egoismus" dagegen.
