i really wish mastodon (and friends) had a feature akin to discord's spoiler text where you can just censor certain sections of your text and folks can click on it to see it if they choose to.

@masukomi filtering is about the closest you'll get on mastodon. but it does the entire post versus just a CWed section. depending on the client you use, though, you can have it post a particular message instead and it may or may not show you who the post's author is.

Hey, people who eat Chinese takeout in the metrowest area of greater , specifically : anybody regularly order from Hometaste?

I just tried them for the first time, and had an unfortunate experience. I called in my order and requested it with no cilantro leaf. The person taking the order seemed to understand and verbally confirmed. When we got it home, we discovered two of our three dishes were garnished with it.

I'm trying to make sense of what happened. Do they usually put cilantro on their noodle soups? (Did our request just get dropped?) Do they not usually garnish with cilantro and wires got crossed and it turned into "please garnish with cilantro"? Do they just not honor ingredient requests?

also, can't say i had the best experience dining there either. went there one night and made the mistake of dining in instead of ordering out. apparently a relative of someone who works there was hanging out with her, bringing along their screaming and toys-banging-against-the-table child. left there with a headache and a vow never to darken their doorstep again.

it's not bad code (mostly) it's just.... it could be a lot easier to understand, and thus maintain, and if i'm going to have to spend the time figuring out wtf it does i might as well save the next person the same trouble.

@masukomi there was a time when i would spend a not insignificant amount of time commenting the ever-loving-shit out of and imposing a clean tab-indented-structure to other people's code so that i could work with it better and so that other people who came after me (which, often, was me, actually) could work with it better. but then i discovered a more elegant solution that saved me from all that time spent dropping f-bombs at my monitor: i stopped working with code.

total game changer. my god.

just spent a couple hours doing some work on my private discord server. it's most definitely a labor of love and i work very hard to maintain and encourage the community that i have somehow managed to cultivate there, it being largely seeded by people i know irl. could it be more active? sure. could it have a larger population? probably. but this growth both in numbers and engagement has been an organic process. and frankly, i wouldn't have it any other way. community is so important to me.

You know. Today really cemented why even though I've had a bluesky invite for several weeks now I haven't used it

See. Today some pro life asshole came in and started concern trolling me. And then I found out he came from an instance of Christians who were all very sad their chicken sandwich place wasn't bigoted enough against gays anymore

And despite the fact that I'm just a user the things I could do to keep myself and my community safe were

  1. Block the guy and his entire instance
  2. Notify my server's mods so they could decide to silence or defederate (they did)
  3. Make a post recommending other users vulnerable to their bullshit instance block them
  4. Recommend that mods/admins from other instances silence/defederate

In essence, I encountered a problem on the fediverse and could take decisive action to protect myself and others by having the problem yeeted into the void. One minute I had a problem, the next myself and many others didn't. You just don't get that anywhere else

what if there was a coordinated effort made by american people of color to treat white people with the suspicion and microaggressions they treat us with? like, all of us on the same week would make dramatic efforts to cross the street in order to not walk near them or clutch our purses or bags when they get near us or choose another seat on the bus once they sat near us or, my favorite, give them extra special attention over other customers when in stores.

Woot, my co-worker has gotten her TestFlight build of my app and is using it!

Boo, she has already encountered the app-crashing bug I spent some time working on this weekend. Really need to finish that up and get an updated build out.

The one thing that's even more motivating to get me to work on an app than me wanting to use it myself is having an app that other people are using. (Also a great way to prioritize which things to work on/fix first - feedback is such a great motivator.)

Spaces (multiple 'desktop' support on ) was introduced 17 years ago.

It is my fervent hope that before it hits 20 someone will have solved the devilishly hard problem of allowing users to give their desktops meaningful names. 🤦‍♀️

Realistically though, it's much more likely they'll just remove the labels entirely. They've been gradually removing features ever since they added it.

@masukomi i've actually been using a desktop performance monitor app as a way to label each of my desktops. the dude who made it had taken it down from the app store ages ago (because he no longer had the bandwidth to provide support) but i pinged him on twitter, once upon a time, and he put it back for the less than 2min it took for me to grab it. one of my favorite internet moments involving strangers. 😄
