Behind search for masto is a resource-hungry #java application called #elasticSearch. Sure you might be able to get Masto to run on a #raspberrypi4, but you won't be running elastic search with it.
Having recently moved my instance to a much more powerful system, I now run ES, and WOW what a difference being able to search post makes! Soooo many times I wanted to reference a toot that had scrolled by but had no way of finding it. Now I do!
Even though I've put some serious resource limits on ES, it's bar none the most resource intensive service running (out of around 25).
Please consider sending a few bucks to the #MastodonAdmin of your instance. Better yet, if you can afford it, sign up for a monthly donation. They need it.
Had a serious database failure earlier due to cascading bad decisions. I started deleting a bunch of old data, rather than using #tootctl. This led to a bunch of errors in the #pgsql#docker container.
I moved the database into bare metal using a #nuc with 32GB of RAM and 4 cores. I'm going to use this for other services too, and it was on my roadmap of transition. #nextcloud will be moving to that as well.
I added a big #Relay to the oslo.town server because I wanted to see what happened.
I feel like the feeds are more "alive" and it brings in a bunch more interactions from people, but the #MastodonAdmin Dashboard tells me the database size grew 20GB over the past 24 hours.

These servers have been silenced as they are still sending spam despite there being a new version to at least allow some protections against this and moderators should have cleaned servers by now.
I will revisit all my silenced servers including below end of the month. Any servers still sending spam will be considered unmoderated/unmaintained and will be permanently blocked. Any new servers spamming March 1st and beyond will suffer the same fate.
The new hcaptcha system on #mastodon will not fix the issue with unmaintained or unmoderated servers still sending SPAM.
I feel the hcaptcha solution was really “too little, too late.” It has absolutely no benefit to people who have servers with closed registration such as my own. #mastodonadmin#fediverse#spam#cybersecurity#infosec
The nicest thing about adding active users who are friends like @slade to my server is now I don’t look like a raving lunatic talking to themselves when I check the local feed of my personal mastodon server.

The lack of urgency on the spam attacks from @Gargron is really shocking. We’ve been asking for better moderation tooling and ways to plugin spam filters and more for years. Now there’s actual issues most of us are experiencing on smaller servers and they STILL don’t seem to prioritize it at @MastodonEngineering#Fediblockmeta#MastodonAdmin
@Gargron and the team really need to do something about sign-ups on Mastodon in general.
There is no reason why after all of this time that Mastodon doesn't have some kind of captcha or something similar for when users sign up.
This process really needs to be refined and made better, as in, way better, because right now it's absolutely awful and is part of the reason why we're getting these waves of spam bots.
Just had to upgrade my Mastodon server and paid my @mastohost bill for my hosting. My server is very well federated for how small it is. I'm more than glad to pay for a managed host as I am still very much learning cloud architecture with AWS and more.
I paid for the resource upgrade plus 3 more months of hosting. This server is now paid up until June 30th, 2024 at a cost of $192 paid in Bitcoin. I'm considering reducing from 2 to 1 year of retention #Infosec#Cybersecurity#MastodonAdmin
Man, it's crazy how much less I/O is my new Mastodon instance VPS doing than the old one was 😲 I think it was choking in that 2 GB of RAM, with Elastic also eating too much and everything else was swapping… now with 8 GB it has space for everything.
Question for the #MastodonAdmin crowd: Do you notice that Sidekiq is leaving locks hanging around indefinitely? Or if you go hit "retry all" on your dead queue, a good number of them will succeed... especially if you delete all of those old locks first? I'm just wondering if there are issues I should raise with the Mastodon dev team/look into patching myself.
Q for people who have used Elastic Search, esp. for a Mastodon instance: how should I configure it to use less memory (while still having enough)? Right now it seems to eat as much as it wants (~4 GB)...
It's a single-user instance, so the total data size it reports is 40 MB now.
Fun reminder for #mastodonadmin out there: If you don't setup a schedule job to clean out old content, your hosting bill is likely going to continue to grow over time espectially WRT object storage. 850GB in Google Storage isn't cheap.

One thing I learned when starting hambon.es is that the inactive server is so quiet until you add a relay. I managed to find a few and already added the one this instance uses. But that was last night and it will hopefully only take a week before at least one accepts me.
Once I have a relay, I'll move forward to the migration. I do wish I could bring all my posts though. I do manage both instances, but no one seems to have scripted the process. And I donno if I'd feel good about doing open database surgery on a Mastodon instance.
Any #mastodonadmin here who has successfully gotten LibreTranslate to work?
We're using a self-hosted LibreTranslate instance. When I query its /languages endpoint, it shows all the possible combinations.
But Mastodon's /translation_languages endpoint insists, that it can't translate from many languages. Especially languages I that I can clearly see in LibreTranslate's output. It also offers the reverse. I watched LT download all the missing models, too.
Our mastodon instance has been running off an old server with spinning rust disks and a 100 mbit link since we set it up.
I just moved everything over to a new server with nVME storage and gigabit link and damn, our instance is so fast now. No load times at all? I knew it would be faster, but still I am surprised just how fast it is.
