From time to time uses its fixed down looking camera, or EDL_RDCAM, to record movies of, well, the ground πŸ₯΄ , probably while the ground radar RIFMAX does its thing. And let's not forget that it's the same camera that captured those epic images during the rover's descent to the Martian ground.

@paulrickards back in 1990 my dads work imported an Amiga 1000 from the states to evaluate it. Once done they didn’t need it so they let him take it home to us. Like little birds in the nest being fed a big fat worm we devoured the awesomeness.

@colinburgess@mastodon.nz avatar

@paulrickards At some point though I wanted to transfer some files from the amiga to 5.5” floppies. So I got dad to bring one home.

However he kept forgetting.

One night, he remembered though, so he came in, put it next to the computer and went to say hi to Mum

colinburgess,
@colinburgess@mastodon.nz avatar

@paulrickards New Zealand runs on 240V power, of course. Dad had rigged up a massive transformer for us to use for the Amiga.

You might get an idea of where this is going…

colinburgess,
@colinburgess@mastodon.nz avatar

@paulrickards so yes, delighted as I rashly forgot the power issue and plugged the poor innocent disk drive into lethal 240V death.

It spun up for a bit and then popped loudly, the magic smoke wafting forlornly through the vents

colinburgess,
@colinburgess@mastodon.nz avatar

@paulrickards so then I had to do the walk of shame, up to the kitchen, where poor dad hadn’t even received his cup of tea yet.

My cheeks must have been burning because he knew immediately by the look on his face.

colinburgess,
@colinburgess@mastodon.nz avatar

@paulrickards the tech guy at work apparently laugh heartily at the electrolyte spread thoroughly through the housing. He managed to fix the power supply though and it worked just fine after that.

They don’t build em like they used to!

The end

colinburgess,
@colinburgess@mastodon.nz avatar

@paulrickards alas, you never value things when you have them. A few years later we got a 286 and sold the Amiga.

A small manufacturing defect destroys your computer's main storage, and it's nonrecoverable. All data lost.

Do you have backups so that you can restore what you cannot do without, and quickly? Have you checked those backups are happening? do you have multiple backups? have you checked they're restorable?

colinburgess,
@colinburgess@mastodon.nz avatar

@NanoRaptor I heard that openAI is happy to accept all your data and you can ask questions about it if you ever need to…

In today’s mini Japanese story (listened to for language practice), a woman with two children boards a ferry, along with a samurai. The kids demand candy, but there is only has one sweet 🍬.

The kids are brats and each demands to be given the candy.

The samurai wakes and draws his katanaπŸ—‘οΈ.

Is the solution to decapitate a child? I thought so.

So did the mother who hides the kids behind her.

But samurai slices the candy in two, solving the issue, although with a disappointing lack of finality.

colinburgess,

@Sheril as a New Zealand born and raised ex budgie owner, this brought just so many feelings…

First - naming an Australian bird Kiwi is just such a beautiful chirp at the Ozzies (I love my cousins in Melbourne but I also love taunting them)

Next - Budgies are gorgeous, fun, insane little birds who will talk to a reflection in the mirror. I can just imagine the craziness of a zoom call.

Lastly - how do you keep the bird shit out of your keyboard?
