compost

@compost@regenerate.social

We enjoy creating compost and worm bins on a small scale to produce beautiful gardens.

I would like to invite you to join other enthusiasts who share the same interest in composting at #Compostodon.

Composting is a simple way to take #climateaction that anyone can practice.

Please take note that in this community, we do not tolerate climate change deniers and appropriate measures will be taken if necessary.

This year more than any year, my health has been affected by .

I have been experiencing hay fever symptoms even though I was not allergic before.

To me, it means having to take powerful allergy medicine to be able to go outside and despite this, I am still not safe, and wearing a mask outside is a necessity.

When we talk about the being real on our account, it is not because we are being brainwashed or greenwashed.

It is because it is affecting us directly as well as our .

This is why we have zero patience or tolerance for those who would like to deny those issues. They can go to hell.

I would like to address here how mulching lawnmowers are detrimental to your grass and your garden.

So many times have I heard people say, spraying the grass clippings is good for the soil.

If it was true we would have understood by now how much topsoil this method can make.

And the truth here is that it creates more troubles for your soil than it fixes problems.

Because grass clippings are full of nitrogen, when they decompose they turn into bacteria. And it is those bacteria that feed the weeds we have in our lawns.

I have seen a lot of our neighbors mow every Saturday in the same pattern and do nothing but compact the soil and give bacteria to their weeds.

Very few people collect their grass clippings to use as a proper material for a compost pile.

You can give nutrients back to your soil by creating a compost pile and spraying it on your soil. This will do a much better job than your lawnmower.

Yes, it is a good idea to do so. here we do that with a mix of carbon materials.

This video is a neat talk by Joel Salatin Himself who will tell you about How You Can Replace Factory Fertilizer | Joel Salatin

And to answer the introduction in this video if my kids want to become farmers I will be amazed that they want to feed the world and save the planet at the same time. That sounds like hero work to me and Joel is one of those heroes that does not wear a cape.

Today our 20ish-year-old cat passed away and we had to put an end to his suffering.

I would like to express that despite having to witness his suffering for Earth Day I tried to not make this about me as much as I could because, to be honest, The climate crisis is an issue that has severe consequences.

I could not give less of a shit about those who choose inaction and to be careless. I am sorry but if you can't have compassion for this issue there is something wrong with you.

I love the earth deeply and this gives me the courage to care and despite adversity to do what is good.

Needless to say, climate change deniers are going to be uncared for by this community.

We can be angry at and those who could not care less for it.

Do I want to be remembered as the angry one in the corner who did not act?

If one day my kids ask me what have you done for the planet I want to tell them what I did and prove them that I cared for their planet.

Happy we only borrow this planet from the next generation, they will see us as careless and uncivilized fools if we keep doing nothing.

@EverydayMoggie to those who think it is a good idea to make capitalism our salvation, remember the basket of eggs, what happens if the basket breaks or collapses?

This is why I always smile at those who try to explain to me the but... the economy.

Composting has the power to limit the waste we send to the landfill and the problems it generates.

Life depends entirely on our topsoil and homemade compost empowers you to create at your place a rich soil and make your plants and .

To believe your actions do not matter is a gross mistake. If you plant a tree every day in a lifetime you will have planted a forest.

Our habits are what can save us

If you want to make every day, it is simple.

Daily ask yourself what you can do for the planet today and achieve it. That makes a lot of actions for one lifetime.

Individuals have a lot of power. If you plant a tree every day, that will look like a forest at the end of your existence.

Being early for

It is good to pick a day to bring more awareness to our planet.

As a habit, you should ask yourself every day what should I do for the planet today.

For a single person, one daily action can lead to many days and actions if we extend it to a lifetime.

What did you do for the planet today?

We stopped counting the number of times people were convinced an individual action could not fix global problems.

This account is an individual action, we are not a corporation or an organization. Just by changing our habits, we decided to inspire the people of that we could as people be one solution to fix a global crisis like .

It is our habits that make us, and if we decide to do nothing, we all know the result, nothing will be achieved.

Building a new habit around composting is a simple action but if we all do it we can make a difference.

To us, the best mulch that you can use for the garden beds does not come from the garden center.

It is whatever biomass you have next to you that can be used and that is free.

This year I have used leaves from our trees in the garden beds and chopped weeds into the aisles.

Yes, it is labor-intensive to do that but I know that every year I have this resource available for free. So instead of sending this yard waste to the landfill and creating greenhouse gasses, it is best to find ways to use it in the garden.

What mulch do you like to use for your garden?

compost,
@compost@regenerate.social avatar

@elysegrasso

This is why we have been working hard to use our compost as a mulch.

We are surrounded by conventional agriculture properties that use chemicals and for us using a local resource has too many risks of contamination.

So we decided to plant as many trees as we could and use as much as we could the resources from our yard.

We mostly use composting worms that can process an amazing amount of waste and create produce that is just as good if not superior as any commercial compost.

I have often heard some compost "experts" on social media asking people to stop composting grass clippings.

Unless you treat your grass with chemical products and I won't quote brands, there are no valid reasons not to compost your grass clippings.

Of course, if you prefer to let your grass go wild it is even better for the ecosystem.

Here I always collect our grass and make compost to give it back to the soil and make the grass more green.

@ctietze

It is not easy to compost grass clippings and you have to make sure that the layers in the pile are not too thick. Introducing a lot of browns like wood chips is a good idea to allow the air into the pile.

compost,
@compost@regenerate.social avatar

@ctietze

Yes, I prefer to mix to allow a lot of air into the pile. This pile needs a lot of water and a too-thick layer of clippings with no air and a lot of water will create anaerobic conditions.

compost,
@compost@regenerate.social avatar

@TerryBTwo

My favorite way to compost those clippings is to make a hugelkultur bed and make sure that the layers of clippings are not too thick.

If they are too thick they can attract rodents or unwanted visitors.

compost,
@compost@regenerate.social avatar

@arildsen

It brings too much bacteria to the ground and gives food to the weeds. I used to do that as well but I don't anymore.

compost,
@compost@regenerate.social avatar

@arildsen

This is why we collect and compost those grass clippings, to give the nutrients back.

You can also make your compost extract or tea and apply it to the lawn.
