***** WGA strike continues, SAG-AFTRA strike begins *****

The Writers Guild of America strike has now been joined by the actors' SAG-AFTRA union, further shutting down production here in L.A. and elsewhere.

A major issue in the entertainment industry strikes now -- and in many other strikes that will be coming in other fields -- is fears of jobs being destroyed by AI. And these unions are absolutely correct to be taking firm stances on this. -L

craigm,

@lauren Hand in hand with AI is IP: the studios want to strong-arm actors into giving up their publicity rights in perpetuity, giving the studios a library of virtual actors that can be used without compensation. Add that to plans to hollow out the below the line talent through AI and you can see how the studios want to shift the center of gravity to themselves in a new (and concerning) way.

craigm,

@lauren I’m relatively skeptical about the broad productivity impacts of AI, but god knows Hollywood is disproportionately impacted by this. It’s a tailor-made scenario for generative AI disruption.

Wow - this just gets crazier and crazier...

"The video footage posted by Prigozhin earlier on June 23 that reportedly shows the aftermath of a Russian rocket strike on a Wagner rear camp is almost certainly staged"

"Whoever is filming doesn’t run away from the explosion, as you would expect"

"There’s no visible crater in any of the posted footage, or any dirt that a normal explosion would gave scattered"

craigm,

@gulovsen The next question is, why has (so far) Putin not emerged to make any comment? You wouldn’t expect the Tsar to be silent while the boyars are fighting.

Gonna be a long week for the grid: a nuclear generating unit’s gone down with no further explanation, while most of the state is suffering under a major heat wave that’s also reducing solar output (compensated with increased wind output). Might see another round of rolling blackouts and ERCOT price shocks by Tuesday.

@cliffwade I’m generally an XR skeptic, but we lost some really good folks to Apple’s VR team several years ago, so I’m excited to see what they haven’t been able to talk about since then!

    Wow!

A Texas high school had to move its graduation because only 5 students were reportedly eligible to graduate

    >Marlin High School recently moved to a four-day school week to try and help attendance.

    craigm,

@pivoinebleue 40% of kids live below the poverty line there. Like a lot of the south, it’s a community left to fend for itself.

Mexican president tells Florida Hispanics: Don’t give ‘one single vote’ to DeSantis - NewsBreak

    >MEXICO CITY — Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Thursday called on Hispanic people in Florida to vote against Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), who launched his 2024 White House bid the day before, because of his immigration policies. “Hopefully Hispanics in Florida will wake up and not give him one single vote, to not…

    craigm,

@pivoinebleue Christ, that’s basically free advertising for DeSantis given the fever swamp that’s Florida politics.

@juddlegum High storage and bandwidth costs for low-value brand-unfriendly video is one of those models where the economics get worse the more successful you are. Go anti-woke, go broke.

The quality of the anti-WGA astroturf bots is proof that the studios really can’t produce anything without writers.

There is literally nothing else to say about Clarence Thomas and his undistinguished judicial tenure but that he is a charlatan, a con artist, an amoral striver who grifted his way into the highest Court in the land, a man who smeared his hard-working sister as a shiftless layabout just so he could sleaze his way into an endless and unethical cascade of cash from right-wing billionaires. Even on a Court packed with political operatives notable only for partisan fealty, he is uniquely corrupt.

I should note that however much potential I see in language models for programming, I can't bring myself to actually use one because I both think all of the training data shenanigans are fundamentally unethical and I trust the big AI companies even less than I do the rest of tech.

So, my writing on it is going to be based on system analysis and well-structured research all the way. None of the bullshit personal anecdote stuff.

    craigm,

@glecharles @baldur I’m fascinated by the number of peer-reviewed articles that make astoundingly strong claims about LLMs based on nothing more than (inadvertently) cherry-picked transcripts and vibes. No, my tenured friend, your LLM doesn’t have a theory of mind; no, your LLM is not fact-grounded; no, your LLM is is not capable of reason no matter how convincing you find your stochastic parrot’s random walk through high-dimensional linguistic space.

@futurebird @doctorjaymarie It’s a pernicious equivalency they have, to to disagree with the 1619P’s interpretation of facts versus 1776P’s wholesale twisting or invention of assertions. Mainstream commentary is simply broken.
