6 months ago, I used Unicode for bolding and italicizing text in Mastodon. I had no idea that I was harming people by doing this, but disability advocates told me to knock it off—and I did.

Today, there was another conversation about accessibility, and progress was made.

Everyone should want an inclusive Fediverse.

@LutherBlissett13 @revk @atomicpoet i wasn't aware that screen readers don't handle unicode well but as someone who had to design a web-based solution to store and display chatacters in many dozens of non-latin character sets, just wanted to point out that unicode has a lot of use cases that don't involve trying to be 'cute' (to use a word from that article) on social media.

Lots of good discussion on and going on. These four questions dominate my thinking:

  1. Can the ATProtocol really scale and federate? This is a very open question.

  2. Can BlueSky's ATProtocol moderation work at scale? Or even NOT at scale? Blurry still.

  3. Can the and improve its UX and UI experiences faster than the these first two things occur?

Lastly:

  1. How quickly do robust Fediverse/ATProtocol bridges emerge?

@rochelimit @fedi @tchambers @ChrisWere yeah but people aren't like servers - you can't just pop a new one in a slot every time your user count increments by 1000 - they have to be trained, and they can be traumatized by the content, they can't work 24/7, they aren't algorithms (they interpret business rules subjectively), etc

There's a certain poetry to the narrative.

  1. a group of ideologues submit a terrible paper about how science is too woke

  2. it gets rejected because it is crap

  3. they feel feel horribly aggrieved because surely they are entitled to publish this shit where ever they choose

  4. these subaltern voices—silenced victims of cancel culture—air their grievances in the NY TImes, WSJ, etc

  5. the whole episode disproves their thesis. In science, if not op-ed pages, quality clearly still matters

@ct_bergstrom i love the comment from the guy who got bailey's letter: 'No [I wasn't angry with his response]. I thought it was pretty cool. I've used that letter a couple times myself since.'

as a mastodon user
i want to be able to follow another instance from any account and access it like my local timeline or via a tab
so that i don't have to leave my app or use another account to browse it

Okay people: who has one of those e-ink notepad thingies? I know a lot of friends swear by the Remarkable 2, and I've played with it, but couldn't quite fall in love with it. But I've been looking at the Supernote A6X and thinking... you know... that looks like it would work for me. But... still... not sure I can justify the price, which is quite high.
