🤔 Do bicycles create empathy? Or do people that care about other people, tend to care about bikes?

Why is there such a big overlap between "bike infrastructure radicalized people," and "people that care about people that are different than themselves?"

Why is there such a low overlap between "people with trash hateful takes" and "people that want more bike infrastructure?"

crumbleneedy,
@crumbleneedy@aus.social avatar

@mekkaokereke kinda depends. it's not as badin melbourne as in the part of belgium this post is about but i've experienced some of the shit from other cyclists they talk about.

Nice As Fuck - “Higher” (2016)

An all-female indie rock supergroup led by Jenny Lewis in one of her many side projects since leaving the band Rilo Kiley.

Lewis sings over simple beats and post-punk rhythms, with a dash of synth here and there. There’s no guitar on the whole album. For fans of ESG and Delta5 or Pylon.

Get High. Get Low. Get Weird.

someone on bluesky asked why anyone is still on twitter, and i responded:

i was talking yesterday about this with an old friend who's still there and the accounts he follows and most of the friends he interacts with are still there, he finds the whole mastodon thing confusing, and basically doesn't give a shit about musk's antics, so for him twitter is 'just fine'.

i couldn't see any point to pushing 'but it's the devil's platform' with him, and honestly i don't see the point with pushing it on anyone else either: if they still don't give a shit, scolding them seems unlikely to work.

they will leave when it becomes truly unusable, or (what amounts to the same thing) when it becomes impossible to avoid a constant firehose of bullshit.

crumbleneedy,
@crumbleneedy@aus.social avatar

@renwillis they have the luxury of completely tuning that out

crumbleneedy,
@crumbleneedy@aus.social avatar

@renwillis whereas when he let trump back on, that was it for me. different people have different red lines. one person's act of solidarity is another's virtue signal. funny thing is that something similar happened in 2018 to make me open my first mastodon account (and i can't for the life of me remember what it was), but i stuck with twitter for another four years.

    @etherdiver @Robotron 'i often dream of trains', which came out a few years earlier, is a great companion to that - very similar in instrumentation and overall vibe - from his golden age (1979-1990).

    @etherdiver @Robotron don't miss him if he comes to town. i've gone to almost every show i could since 1985 and he's still a lot of fun live.

    one thing i like about over is the extent to which the vibe here differs from that on the latter, which is either a) too much like old twitter and succeeding, or b) too much like old twitter and failing - either way, it just feels off

    crumbleneedy,
    @crumbleneedy@aus.social avatar

    maybe it's the constant dunking. there's a lot of good lefty political content here on but yeah over on the dunking continues apace and it's just so fucking exhausting.

    crumbleneedy,
    @crumbleneedy@aus.social avatar

    and as someone who's advocated for quote-tooting here i gotta say (in a place like where people seem to be striving to re-create pre-musk twitter) it definitely lends itself to a style of interaction that seems designed to produce constant righteously indignant chortling and a permanently clenched butthole

    So who's your favourite pop star?

    Now there's a shiny new Lemmy group up and running at @popheads (Mastodon users: follow it if you want more discussion of pop music in your Mastodon feed), it's time to ask who's your favourite pop star? Do you have a favourite song or album?

    My current faves are:

    Alessia Cara: Perhaps the most talented and certainly the most underrated of the current crop of pop stars. She's fallen out of the limelight the past couple of years, which is a pity, because there's some excellent songs on her recent albums:

    Willow Smith: Done some really great songs recently:

    And some all-time favourites:

    Prince

    John Farnham (but only his Whispering Jack/Age of Reason/Chain Reaction '80s to early '90s run)

    https://youtu.be/VD5Vt6zx_to

    https://youtu.be/EBo1cMumwBM

    Janet Jackson, and most of the broader Jackson family. (Jermaine, Rebbie, and TJ in particular have some hidden gems in their discography.)

    Time to remove cars from Melbourne's Sydney Road.

    One of the interesting details the ABC shows is that retailers along the strip significantly overestimate the percentage of customers who arrive by car.

    While retailers assume nearly two-thirds of customers drive to their stores, the real figure is closer to 30%.

    Already, just under 70% of customers either walk, catch public transport, or cycle.

    Most of those who drive to businesses in the area park in one of the 2000 parking spots off Sydney road, rather than the 450 on the road itself.

    Meanwhile, the lack of a dedicated protected bike lane makes it far less attractive to cyclists. The cars significantly slow down trams. And the exhaust fumes make it unpleasant for pedestrians.

    @fuck_cars @urbanism

    crumbleneedy,
    @crumbleneedy@aus.social avatar

    @ajsadauskas @fuck_cars as someone who lives just off sydney rd - strong co-sign. and a cyclist was hit by a car a died in sydney rd not that long ago. fewer cars could mean more frequent tram service as well.

    crumbleneedy,
    @crumbleneedy@aus.social avatar

    @ajsadauskas @fuck_cars although most people park off the street because there isn't enough parking in sydney rd itself - as you'd expect - but that does mean less parking for people who live within a few blocks (and that's mostly residential). and let's do the same for lygon st. but it has to be combined with increased public transport services - frequency on the upfield line is abysmal, and need better buses too - otherwise it's likely to push a lot of that car traffic to nicholson or melville rd.

    crumbleneedy,
    @crumbleneedy@aus.social avatar

    @ajsadauskas my fave australians:

    the moles (mix of post-punk, psychedlia, krautrock, jangle, chamber pop etc; active around 90-92)

    ed kuepper/saints/aints/laughing clowns (the saints were one of the first punk bands; kuepper left after three albums and has been a huge creative force since - bits of avant garde jazz, dylan, brecht/weill - amazing guitarist)

    Controversial take: the reason Nazis want to come to is because of the culture of shitposting.

    Nazis love shitposting. It’s how they recruit people to their cause.

    @atomicpoet @Defiance what sort of shitposts are you talking about? some of my favorite microblogging is shitposting - a lot of it is perfectly harmless and often obviously leftwing. but i assume you're talking about a specific subgenre ...

    @atomicpoet @Defiance @Jonathanglick if you're referring to chapo and the chapo-adjacent, sure, but i wouldn't blame it on shitposting
