Brent Simmons – Corporations Are Not To Be Loved
In response to Apple's policies on external purchase for AppStore apps Brent has this to say.

But I need to remember, now and again, that Apple is a corporation, and corporations aren’t people, and they can’t love you back. You wouldn’t love GE or Exxon or Comcast — and you shouldn’t love Apple. It’s not an exception

I am so sad to have to admit that even WordPress cannot stand up to those forces. It feels like a death, and I am grieving.

iPad Focused Desk Setup for 2024
After spending much of 2022 and 2023 not using my iPad that much outside of watching YouTube videos and running Zwift for bike training, I've started to make the move back to using the iPad as my primary writing and RSS consumption place. One of the issues that had me move away from the iPad as a regularly used computing platform was my speed issue wit

Feels like -43C today and I can feel the cold air coming off my uninsulated office wall. This may be a laptop work day, but I have a bunch of meetings.

@chris Our first winter my oldest kids bedroom wasn’t insulated so we started with that one. I'm underground so that provides some insulation, but an electric blanket will come out today probably.

Do we Use Polymath as Perjory Now
One of the words we hear passed around in technology circles is polymath. You’ll hear it on some podcast where the host says “my guest today is a true polymath”, but according to Simon Winchester in Knowing What We Know the use of this word is now mere flattery instead of fact.

The Meaning of Polymath

Now we apply the word polymath to anyone that seems smart and has

When my first son was born 15 years ago, I didn't know how to make pizza. I committed to make "Dad's Pizza Night" a thing, and started making pizza every Friday. It didn't have to be great, it just had to exist. At some point over the past 15 years, it became great. Both my kids are enjoying it now. http://blog.punkitup.com/2015/02/make-pizza.html

Red flags I've seen in job postings in the past hour:

    • One star out of 5 on Glassdoor, with 5 detailed ratings in total

    • "You need to be proficient with PHP 5"

    • "Don't worry about writing a cover letter or bringing us documents, our chatbot will ask you the relevant questions!"

    • "You need to know a JavaScript framework such as Laravel"

    • "You need to have TTD running through your veins because test coverage is all we care about!"

    • There's "AI" in the company name.

    • "We are a family"

    curtismchale,
    @curtismchale@mastodon.social avatar

@alda You’re only “family" when they want you to work extra. If you get real sick they won't pay you still or come take care of you.

I even said something in an interview once when they talked about being family.

“So if I get cancer and can’t work you'll continue to pay me so I can be taken care of like a family would?”

The answer was no...then we're not family.

    Help! AV advice needed.

I have an office with low-level background noise.

I’ve tried a condenser mic and they pick up EVERYTHING!!!

I’ve tried a dynamic mic and I need to really have it in my face to eliminate the noise and it’s looks stupid (but sounds awesome).

I’m currently trying a cheap(er) wired lavalier mic and this seems like a good compromise.

    Should I:
    a) Now I’ve proven it’s good invest in a wireless lav mic?
    b) Do something else? Shotgun/directional mic? Hide under a duvet?

@ross @jcasabona @liamdempsey I've used the Wireless Go 2 in the office and out and about. I’ve seen many people use it in video on Youtube both at a desk, and the woodworkers around their shop.
