From my 2000s ar(t)chive…

Stylized 3D illustration for the Dutch ComputerTotaal magazine, about internet movie rental (many years before streaming services were introduced).

Some of my favorite films are on the screens. Do you recognize them all? They can be found in my all-time favorite movies list:

https://letterboxd.com/metinseven/list/my-all-time-favorite-movies/

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin Nice illustration and interesting list! 🙂

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin Definitely! Lots of the classics (Back to the Future, Halloween, Alien, Seven, Taxi Driver, etc). To my shame, I have to admit that I've never seen Das Boot, even though it's one of the most famous films ever made in Germany 🙈.

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin Oh, this is cool, you have reviews for all these films (or even more) 😮

You write that the experience survived the test of time. This is good to hear, as I struggle with older films that have not aged well. I think either brilliant films with good dialogue (like I imagine Das Boot) or over-the-top silly films and CGI (like Robocop 😂) still work for me.

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin Have you seen the new adaptation? I have not, but I would be interested in a comparison. I agree that the themes in the old film are visionary, while the presentation is caricatural and charming. But that is something that is rather rare in the modern blockbuster film industry.

mihailim, to random

@metin @tomcapuder It indeed is a theory, but I have grave reservations about calling it a scientific theory. It's testable only if we're prepared to wait until the literal end of time. Not what I'd call scientific.

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@mihailim @metin @tomcapuder I agree with Tom and Mihai. The fine-tuning argument is an old one, and I think some people want to read more into it than there is. The chances of winning a lottery are astronomically small, yet it happens surprisingly often.

However, the article is interesting as a philosophical discussion. Physics and philosophy are by definition complementary; physics is the testable part, philosophy the untestable part.

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin I understand that, that's why I identify as an agnostic. From a scientific point of view, you can neither prove nor disprove the existence of a higher being.

I completely agree with everything you said. Open-mindedness is the most important thing! What I said reflects something I've learned: Scientific facts can have a lot of cool interpretations, but in the end there are things that are unknowable to us. Maybe just for now, but maybe forever. Nobody knows 🙂

@metin An interesting story to illustrate this, and one I like to tell, is the origin of the many-worlds interpretation in quantum mechanics:

1/3 🧵

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin What happens when you observe a quantum state?

(1) The Copenhagen interpretation says that the wave function collapses into a classical state and that is it. An example of this view is Schrödinger's cat.

(2) The Everett interpretation says that there is no collapse, but a branching of different possibilities, one of which we observe. An example of this view is Wigner's friend [1].

[1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wigner%27s_friend

2/3 🧵

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin The second interpretation, later called the "many-worlds interpretation", led to theories of parallel universes, not only in scifi but also in physics.

I could go on about its intricacies and the cool research that followed. But the important thing is that we do not know which view is correct, since both of them lead to the same observations.

Btw, Hugh Everett did not share this "many-worlds" view and commented on it with the word "bullshit" [2].

@metin It's hard not to feel this way 😏

Maybe the universe is conscious and the biggest troll of all 😂

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin I was not familiar with this quote, but I like it! Very mysterious :)

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin Now if have Kopfkino (imagination cinema) of a universe full of sour gummy worms 😂

@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin Another great recommendation from you! Luckily this show (among some others) is on Youtube:

He also seems to have a great sense of timing and a good mimic!

@metin Thanks, this is worth a read! Too few people are still aware of what generative AI and LLMs really are, what they're actually capable of and what NOT.

As a freelancer in my twenties, I often worked (and played games) all night long, and went to bed when the birds announced sunrise. Then I got up in the early afternoon, and immediately continued work while still in my pajamas.

A friend once gave me a necktie for my birthday, to wear on my pajamas when a client would visit me. 😆

I haven't got a photo of me in my pajamas, but in this magazine interview photo you can clearly see around my eyes that I missed a healthy sleep rhythm. 😅

@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin I got Hoi up and running tonight! 🙂

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin But you were right, the game is quite difficult. Though I think I'm getting the hang of it 😅

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin I like the music and the graphics, so I still enjoy it even though I die a lot and have to start again 😅.

Thanks for the tip, I didn't know I could do that. The camera has been one of my biggest problems so far. But I've learnt that I can "overstep" platforms so that the camera moves a bit further to see the next platform. (Hoi seems to be standing in the air, but I'm sure he can support himself with his tail 😁)

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin That said: I just started in the first level and easily got to the conveyor belt section with the bomb enemy. I used the jump pad to trigger the bomb, but one of its pieces hit me in the air. That was unexpected 😂

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin The rock texture is constantly moving as the camera moves, and to the right, you can see a square with the same texture, but slightly shifted. You cannot jump onto this block either. I see that it looks the in your video, so I assume this is intentional and not an artefact of the from the emulator?

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin I just discovered that the bomb can also jump 😱 Though I managed to escape only to die by falling instead. This thing is giving me nightmares 😂

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin I noticed that 😂

Things escalated quickly at the end of the first level with those crazy platform movements and the little islands suddenly falling from the sky. I'm so glad you included a trainer with infinite lives 🙏

daniel, to amiga
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

Who could that be? 🤔

🤷

@metin Do you know?

daniel, to random
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

To play Hoi I used the Amiga emulator FS-UAE:

https://fs-uae.net/download

Get Hoi from here:

https://archive.org/details/HoiAmigaAGARemix

You will also need an Amiga AGA ROM. Download "Kickstart v3.1 rev 40.68 (1993)(Commodore)(A1200).rom" from here:

https://ia801203.us.archive.org/view_archive.php?archive=/30/items/Older_Computer_Environments_and_Operating_Systems/Amiga.zip

Then follow the instructions to setup and run FS-UAE. Set the "Amiga Model" to "A1200". Select the .adf file as "Floppy Drive". Click on the chip icon and select the .rom file as "Kickstart-ROM". Then click on "Start" and enjoy the game!

The game is hard and has a punishing fall damage. So I've seen this picture a lot 😅
