@metin @tomcapuder It indeed is a theory, but I have grave reservations about calling it a scientific theory. It's testable only if we're prepared to wait until the literal end of time. Not what I'd call scientific.

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@mihailim @metin @tomcapuder I agree with Tom and Mihai. The fine-tuning argument is an old one, and I think some people want to read more into it than there is. The chances of winning a lottery are astronomically small, yet it happens surprisingly often.

However, the article is interesting as a philosophical discussion. Physics and philosophy are by definition complementary; physics is the testable part, philosophy the untestable part.

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin I understand that, that's why I identify as an agnostic. From a scientific point of view, you can neither prove nor disprove the existence of a higher being.

I completely agree with everything you said. Open-mindedness is the most important thing! What I said reflects something I've learned: Scientific facts can have a lot of cool interpretations, but in the end there are things that are unknowable to us. Maybe just for now, but maybe forever. Nobody knows ๐Ÿ™‚

@metin An interesting story to illustrate this, and one I like to tell, is the origin of the many-worlds interpretation in quantum mechanics:

@metin Thanks, this is worth a read! Too few people are still aware of what generative AI and LLMs really are, what they're actually capable of and what NOT.

As a freelancer in my twenties, I often worked (and played games) all night long, and went to bed when the birds announced sunrise. Then I got up in the early afternoon, and immediately continued work while still in my pajamas.

A friend once gave me a necktie for my birthday, to wear on my pajamas when a client would visit me. ๐Ÿ˜†

I haven't got a photo of me in my pajamas, but in this magazine interview photo you can clearly see around my eyes that I missed a healthy sleep rhythm. ๐Ÿ˜…

To play Hoi I used the Amiga emulator FS-UAE:

https://fs-uae.net/download

Get Hoi from here:

https://archive.org/details/HoiAmigaAGARemix

You will also need an Amiga AGA ROM. Download "Kickstart v3.1 rev 40.68 (1993)(Commodore)(A1200).rom" from here:

https://ia801203.us.archive.org/view_archive.php?archive=/30/items/Older_Computer_Environments_and_Operating_Systems/Amiga.zip

Then follow the instructions to setup and run FS-UAE. Set the "Amiga Model" to "A1200". Select the .adf file as "Floppy Drive". Click on the chip icon and select the .rom file as "Kickstart-ROM". Then click on "Start" and enjoy the game!

@metin But you were right, the game is quite difficult. Though I think I'm getting the hang of it ๐Ÿ˜…

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin I like the music and the graphics, so I still enjoy it even though I die a lot and have to start again ๐Ÿ˜….

Thanks for the tip, I didn't know I could do that. The camera has been one of my biggest problems so far. But I've learnt that I can "overstep" platforms so that the camera moves a bit further to see the next platform. (Hoi seems to be standing in the air, but I'm sure he can support himself with his tail ๐Ÿ˜)

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin That said: I just started in the first level and easily got to the conveyor belt section with the bomb enemy. I used the jump pad to trigger the bomb, but one of its pieces hit me in the air. That was unexpected ๐Ÿ˜‚

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin The rock texture is constantly moving as the camera moves, and to the right, you can see a square with the same texture, but slightly shifted. You cannot jump onto this block either. I see that it looks the in your video, so I assume this is intentional and not an artefact of the from the emulator?

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin I just discovered that the bomb can also jump ๐Ÿ˜ฑ Though I managed to escape only to die by falling instead. This thing is giving me nightmares ๐Ÿ˜‚

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin I noticed that ๐Ÿ˜‚

Things escalated quickly at the end of the first level with those crazy platform movements and the little islands suddenly falling from the sky. I'm so glad you included a trainer with infinite lives ๐Ÿ™

Last night I dreamt that the yearly @Blender Conference was held in a Flemish (Belgian) city, reminiscent of Antwerp.

Part of the BCon was a kart race through the city. ๐Ÿ˜† Two persons could sit behind each other on one kart, and guess who accompanied me on my kart? @tonroosendaal himself. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

At a certain point in the race, we lagged behind, so I decided to drive through a hotel lobby and a cafe, to catch up. The excitement of that woke me up. ๐Ÿ˜

Affinity has been bought by Canva, to compete with Adobe.

It was of course a matter of time before Affinity would outgrow its status of sympathetic small-scale Adobe alternative, and be sold for large proceeds.

Canva is into AI. Hopefully Affinity will get some useful AI-powered image processing tools, like upscalers and denoisers, but Canva will probably add generative shit and introduce subscriptions sooner or later.

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin Oh no, I really like Affinity... I hope they don't ruin it completely ๐Ÿ˜”

I was using Gimp before I bought Affinity Photo, but I don't really like the UI. It feels clunky.

I've never heard of Photoscape, but it looks nice and I'll have to give it a try!

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin Haha, I was going to mention @inkscape in another post, but you beat me to it ๐Ÿ˜…

Inkscape is really powerful and has cool features that Affinity Designer lacks, like bitmap extrapolation!

Here is a YouTube channel that demonstrates this: https://www.youtube.com/@LogosByNick

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin Thanks for the tip! I did and was quite surprised to see that it supports basic 3D objects ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

I don't mind paying for good software as long as it's a one-time payment. Subscriptions are hard to justify with my sporadic usage.

What I really like about Affinity is the use of non-destructible filters, as I do a lot of tweaking during the course of a project. Can Photoscape X do the same?

In the late 1980s I was a young Amiga game dev and "demo-scene" guy, member of the Digital Force International.

Back then, I liked an Amiga music track called Journey Through Galaxy, by Darius Zendeh, a.k.a. Mark II.

To surprise a friend in those days, I made this a cappella tribute to the track with our composer Ramon Braumuller, using our sampled voices.

The original track follows in the next postโ€ฆ

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin Thanks Metin, I really appreciate it! ๐Ÿ˜„

Blur was one of our big influences back then! The singer and I go back a long way and started making music at his parents' house where they had a drum set. Those are fond memories!

Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata is also one of my favorites! I also like pieces by Grieg and Tchaikovsky (but not so much the piano ones). I'm also very fond of blues and jazz music.

This is one of my favorite piano jazz songs:

daniel,

@metin Although not a real piano piece, I really like The Ocean by Clinton Shorter. It's such a beautiful song that I want to arrange for piano one day:

@metin You're right, it fits quite well stylistically! The use of the synthesizer reminds me of the excellent soundtrack of the game Endless Space 2 by FlybyNo:

https://youtu.be/0qzSXiU3AaY

While we're on the subject, Pedro Camacho, who is doing the music for Star Citizen, also composes in a similar style, a good example being the song "First Light":

When I was a youngster in the late 1980s, I formed an Amiga game dev team with 2 friends.

Before making games, we started by trying to sell game music that used minimal RAM, made with our music editor SIDmon.

To promote our game music, this energetic music module was composed by our musician Ramon Braumuller. The file, including tiny sampled sounds, is only 22 kilobytes.

Check the #TeamHoi hashtag for more tunes.
