Hello, world!

Following recent changes at Twitter, the new home of the X.Org Foundation is here on Mastodon. Please follow for the latest in the Linux graphics world and the freedesktop.org community. Going forward, we will no longer post to Twitter, but we're so excited to join the Fediverse!

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@XOrgFoundation - Welcome to the Fediverse! Glad you are here!

(Saying that as someone who was a huge user of X-Windows back in the early 1990s ... I still remember blowing people's minds when I showed them that an app could be running on one computer but the user interface would appear on a different computer! 😀 )

So, here is what I'm trying to do to .

  1. Servicing the issue queue for ActivityPub and Activity Stream 2.0 on GitHub on a weekly basis.

  2. Documenting patterns in the Activity Streams 2.0 primer, and hopefully doing the same for ActivityPub.

  3. Sharing architectural essays on my blog. I've got two lined up: end-to-end encryption and account portability.

  4. Building https://cosocial.ca/ .

  5. Expressing myself here. Bringing people here.

@rysiek @evan It would be fun to reactivate Identi.ca accounts… I see mine is still there all these years later - https://identi.ca/danyork

When I was involved in starting a volunteer-run community newspaper in the late 1990s we built and maintained our own website, which contained full copies of all our issues. How did the web get so mystified and inaccessible that community groups - and even businesses - now rely on FarceBook and other corporate providers to host their web presence?

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@strypey Facebook took away friction around hosting and discovery. Sure it wasn’t too hard to set up a website (ex hosted WordPress), but it was work and it required some knowledge and maybe some cost.

And then you had to get a domain name, promote the site, get it listed in search engines, help people find it,

Facebook took all that friction away… “just set up a Page, we’ll take care of all the hosting, and we’ll help people find you. Simple. Easy.”

(But at what cost…)

The default cut in men’s shirts should not be “slim fit”, it should be “dad fit”. Too many of the former in my closet, not enough of the latter.

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@darkuncle Totally agree on this one! I am sadly many years and pounds away from “slim fit”. I love the idea of “dad fit”.

I like Mastodon, so it's still my preferred Twitter alternative. However, this interview with the Bluesky CEO Jay Graber made some interesting points about the differentiation. The first two points — "account portability, global discoverability" — are both personally important to me. Dare I mention the missing global search feature in Mastodon?! We'll see how it plays out, but theoretically I like what Bluesky is trying to do. https://www.theverge.com/23686778/bluesky-ceo-jay-graber-interview-decentralized-social-media-twitter-mastodon

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@ricmac Do you have any sense of what they mean by “composable, customizable curation”?

oskycmk, to fediverse

I have some questions about Mastodon that I hope someone could answer. When the Federated Timeline page says " "that this server knows about." What does that mean exactly? How do servers know each other?

And what does this mean in the explore tab. "These posts from this and other servers in the decentralized network are gaining traction on this server right now."

Also does "the decentralized network" mean all servers in the fed?

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@oskycmk Basically the federated timeline on “ServerA” is the accumulation of all the people on other servers that are followed by people on ServerA.

So if I am on ServerA and I follow

Those will be now part of ServerA’s federated timeline.

And then if someone else on ServerA follows:

Those will be added, too.

The Federated Timeline is the sum of all the followed users on other servers.

This week, The New Yorker published a special digital issue on bottlenecks in the climate crisis. I hope you will read my contribution, about how our anemic ability to monitor methane emissions led the Environmental Defense Fund to build a spaceship and do it themselves.

Because I always like to experiment.. and because someone gave me an invite code 🙂 ... I'm also over on as https://bsky.app/profile/danyork.bsky.social

I expect I will continue to focus my social activity here on Mastodon, but I always like to try out new services to see how they work. 😀

My immediate first reaction was that I felt constrained by only having 300 characters! 🤣

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@bazurk No… no invites yet. I only just joined from someone else’s invite.

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@jmichaelsturm Oh, I fully see Mastodon and ActivityPub as the primary way forward for open, decentralized messaging. That’s why I am here and plan to continue to be.

But there is always room to learn from other platforms and see what they are doing. Over the past 20 years I have probably joined a dozen other platforms to see if they could be a better/different path - or what could be learned.

That’s why I joined Mastodon back in 2016, and have made it my core platform today.

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@abhayakara Um… I am just going to experiment/play with BlueSky, just as I have with probably a dozen other social networks since the early 2000s. Such as Orkut, Twitter (2006), Jaiku, MySpace, FriendFeed, Facebook, Identi.ca, App.net, Status.net, Diaspora, Matrix, and probably 10 others I have forgotten.. and even Mastodon in 2016! Back then, this was just a small experiment that Gargron was trying out.

I am always interested in trying out new services to learn about them.

We're just back from an amazing week-long family vacation in , BC.

Amazing city and surrounding area!

I'll post some photos at some point, but two things surprised me:

1 - in contrast to a previous trip many (many!) years ago to Seattle, there was less salmon on menus than I expected (in fact, very little!); and

2 - there was cheesecake everywhere! Coffee shops, cafes, restaurants... everywhere! 😀

It was an excellent visit and I understand why so many people move there!

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@drfyzziks I did not realize you lived there! I can see why people do.

The cheesecake thing was amusing… we kept seeing it… and seeing it… and then we realized that pretty much everywhere we went there was cheesecake of some form!! 🤣

And places like “Trees Organic Coffee & Cheesecake”! (Which was soooo good!) https://treescoffee.com/

"You're on mute" is what I would nominate as the "phrase of the decade" for the 2020s (even if yes, we're only 3 years in)

I think I've probably heard that phrase directed to someone on at least 4 or 5 calls this week - for work, with friends, and for a class - and in at least one case I was the one who was speaking while muted. 🤦‍♂️

Woke up to 32.1 degrees F (0 C) this morning! While it is forecast to get up to 57 F (14 C) by this afternoon ... it's a good reminder that here in northern , just about 45 minutes south of the Canadian border... can still visit us! We have, in fact, had the random brief snow storm in early May in past years.

(And also why many people don't plant vegetables in gardens until closer to the end of May.)

If you have a lawn and use a lawnmower to cut the grass, how often do you sharpen the blade?

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

For the record, I have been in the “Never” camp with our current lawnmower, but after 6 or 7 years, I am now thinking it may need some sharpening. 😃
