since you can't see twitter posts unless you're logged in, the feeds integrated into the regional fire/emergency/AQI things i look at are no longer publicly available so that's ... a thing.

deewani,
@deewani@mastodon.social avatar

@nerdseyeview I posted something similar earlier. I have several disaster related lists I share with people who aren’t on there. Been worried for 3 days about my nephew who is with the California Conservation Corps in Fortuna, so was watching wildfires up there for him. He finally got in touch, and said he is OK, but they may send his crew to go work the storm damage. So much valuable info on , official and non-official helpers relaying info during these times. It’s so sad.

The fact that makes you create an account/log in now to view anything so damn ridiculous. Previously I have shared my lists for Fire Emergency, Weather, etc with folks who don’t use that site… Disappointed yet again.

    Once upon a time... the TV remote was simple, mechanical, didn't need a battery, and had great

    The original "clicker" remote.

    @exador23 Mechanical dial on the black & white Zenith? That’s what we had...

    deewani,
    @deewani@mastodon.social avatar

    @exador23 Haha plus the screens were small OFC. Upgrading to a color 25” was a huge deal back then. To this day I love analog buttons, dials, & especially toggles in my ‘04 Mini Cooper.

    I'm continually baffled by people who voluntarily go to conferences, movie theaters and dine-in restaurants, but who would never do something like go skydiving, because they think that skydiving is too dangerous.

    deewani,
    @deewani@mastodon.social avatar

    @Njord I go to the theater, I am lucky to be able to choose a weekday matinee and drive to a theater in a less populated area 20 minutes away with few folks in the screening. Masked up OFC. I miss smuggling my own healthy snacks in but I like being healthy more. No indoor anything w/o a mask.

    My fellow dudes: If you are entering a conversation among women, especially one that is explicitly about women's issues, out of a genuine desire to be helpful by offering a male perspective, take a moment to consider that they are IMMERSED in male perspectives, they are force-fed them all day every day, they know, really, they know better than you do because they've heard it AND seen it from the outside, you can let this one go. I promise.

    Tonight, I'm going to watch the movie, Baby Driver.

    The premise is fascinating and the lead is engaging. I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed the little bit I saw previously.

    I’ve logged into Threads a total of three times. Each time I’ve been struck by how bad a job they did at building a Mastodon app. It really is the worst implementation of microblogging I’ve seen, with no actual way to see what people you follow post, just an endless feed of celebrities. It’s bonkers.

    deewani,
    @deewani@mastodon.social avatar

    @JosephAndriano TBH I would miss , but refuse to do threads based on their app’s privacy invasion. It is said there will be a browser eventually. But it is also said at some point we will be able to see threads posts from Mastodon, don’t know if it is true but that would be ideal to me.

    deewani,
    @deewani@mastodon.social avatar

    @JosephAndriano Oh interesting. They must have a good reason for it. I barely understand Mastodon & Fediverse. I still have a lot of learning to do but I love it here.

    Been mostly offline the last couple of days while trying to process all that is going on from my current location off-island.

    I still cannot fathom the destruction that unfolded this past week in Maui. It will take me a while to wrap my head around it (as will others there I'm sure of it). The collective trauma there is going to be felt for a very long time and nobody will be untouched by it.

    My heart aches for my island.

    @geekaren Surviving an “ordinary” house fire (just barely), I may have a tiny bit of understanding. But it does not compare. They had no time, no warning, blocked escape routes. And the survivors: no communication, no water, and stories like a young boy separated from family in the water for over 6 hours to escape flames on the shore. The PTSD will also be devastating.
