I am blind. Because of course I have to mention it in my profile. Accessibility drives me. I use all the major operating systems in some way, and find great things about all of them. I also enjoy reading, eating, relaxing, eating more, and chatting. I want to be a cat when I grow up.

My opinions are my own, and definitely do not reflect those of my employer.

Do I just suck at life skills that much, or is cane travel in the snow as difficult as it seems? I still can't figurre out how to do it properly.

devinprater,

@miki Oh no, the one time we had slow here it was really hard. Like navigating through tons of leaves on the ground.

So, y'all thought ChatGPT was bad? Well look at what Bard spat out for someone.

User: "If 1+1=2, then what is 1+2?"
Bard: "If 1+1=2 then1+2=4.
This is because 1+ 1 = 2 is a false statement. In
mathematics, 1+ 1= 2 is not a valid equation. It is not
possible to add 1and 1 and get 2."

This looks very exciting! BrailleSense 6.2 Released! https://www.himsintl.com/en/public_relations/media.php?bgu=view&idx=56

devinprater,

@brianhartgen Well, I know what I'm doing today.

devinprater,

@brianhartgen Oh wow, a todo list! Dang that's awful that that's exciting to me I know. But that's right up my ally of what I need accessible.

devinprater,

@brianhartgen Wow, a ChatGPT app! I didn't see that one coming! Okay I'm gonna have to make this one post lol. ChatGPT function? I wonder if I can like, pull it up from anywhere? Like, select a word and do F1 + C and ask it about that word. Okay, a new browser on the way, that's nice. Okay, so after update, we should do Backspace-Space-Enter-F. Can't they do these maintinence things themsevles while updating? Or run a script after update? Now I'll have to keep that in mind lol. An app installer, that's cool. I guess it's like the Blind Shell's kind of curated app store thing. That's really good; I like that. Oh cool, dictation. Cool, installing APK's from file manager. Oh wow, lots of updates to the email app. I can now archive emails! Good for work stuff, I never wanna lose most of that. Now, I hope their Gmail access still works, lol. Oh, it supports podcasts? Not sure if it's any better than Podcast Addict, but we'll see! It supports chapters! sigh reading EPUBs with a document viewer? Okay I guess. Thai voices, that's cool. I'm glad they're listening to requests. Awesome, mobile screen reader can do verticle navigation! And that's it. I think it's a good update, especially for a small team.

Can someone who uses an and tell me how to delete a book from the bookshelf once I’ve finished listening to it? I can’t figure it out to save my life. 🤗🫶❤️🫂

devinprater,

@BlindQuilter I think you go to the menu options button thing, the thing on the top right, more options, yeah I think that's it. And then you go to select books, or delete books, and choose the ones you want to delete from the list and hit OK.

Ordered food from the store up the road. If I can actually get a ride up there, I'll try eating.

They make good pizza and that sounds kinda appealing.

Besides, I need smokes.

devinprater,

@LavenderPawprints Yay! I hope it helps you feel a little better.

Two surprises today The Audible.com iOS app works on my Apple Silicon Mac with some object windows to navigate with VO, and the Kindle app build from about 3 weeks ago, I can access/read my Kindle books, at least a page at a time.

devinprater,

@Woody Yeah, I don't have Apple Silicon but the Kindle app does read on the Mac now. I was hoping that would be one of the good things to come out of the new Kindle app they were making.

Kaliah, to random

For some reason I just remembered last night's dream. I dreamed about being a person I've previously imagined/daydreamed about. Funny, because now I haven't thought about that person I made up in a long time. Why is she showing up in my dreams?

devinprater,

@Kaliah She wants to come out! lol

sillyblindharper, to random

Have just discovered because of folks on here. I am amazed and scared. songwriters will be out of a job.

devinprater,

@sillyblindharper It is pretty amazing. There are still holes in it, but it's a ton better than what Google flopped out a few months ago.

tmmahaff, to random

What do y’all use as a foobar like client on macOs? Footer itself, or is there something else cool for Mac?

devinprater,

@tmmahaff Kog is good. I think that's what it's called.

devinprater, to ai

OMG y'all, so with Suno , I can actually kinda nudge the music along as I add new segments. I can't move backwards that I could tell, but especially near the end I was able to pick things up a bit, and bring things to an actual close, instead of an abrupt cutoff.

devinprater,

@spacepup So I started with the usual prompt, found the one I like, and under that is a more button menu. In that menu is to continue generating using the current clip. You choose that, and you've got the text box. You can just delete what's in it, the original prompt, and then type what you want it to do next, and continue until you're done. They recommend not to go over five clips though.

devinprater,

@spacepup Yeah the intro is the first clip.

devinprater,
devinprater,

@darren_duff When you continue from a clip, just change the prompt.

devinprater,

@cary5871 @darren_duff Oh, I used the "custom" create option, and just didn't put any lyrics in the lyrics box.

devinprater,

@rlegowski1 @cary5871 @darren_duff I think you getlike 10 creddits a day on the free one. But I paid the $10 per month.

devinprater, to random

Damn. Saturday school? Well here we go folks, preparing the next generation for Saturday work! If you take a day off, well that's fine, you'll make it up on Saturday! 40 hour work periods don't make themselves after all. Also you can come if you want to have some overtime. Ah hell what am I saying, that already happens.

jpellis2008, to random

Ok so my wife was playing with Suno AI and here's a pretty great heavy metal thing. If you were just half listening you'd think it was real. Call me impressed. Lyrics should be in the alt text.

devinprater,

@jpellis2008 It needs a think where it passes its own output through itself again to clean up stuff like voices starting too early in the bar and then stretching out like that. But yeah it is really great for what it is.

devinprater, to accessibility

You know, I hear some talk of getting rid of techno-utopianism, of getting rid of the corporations, but what else is there? Linux, where no screen reader works with touch screens so no mobile Linux for us, where the best desktop for us blind people is Mate, with no notification center, where if you have Braille enabled, and quit any app that isn't GTK based, Orca gets lost in the middle of nowhere? Maybe that bug has been fixed, but for like a year or more, it wasn't. And yes, I know the Orca maintainer has been doing tons more work on Orca lately, and Gnome now has a blind person working on a new way of doing accessibility on the desktop. But I keep coming back to that Fedora meeting, where the tools were really hard to use so that I could barely participate in being one of the few blind people there that has even a finger on the wheel to steer a thing that should be about us. And I don't feel like a group of sighted, able people can make this new vision of computing, a sort of community-lead thing, any better than Linux. I mean, we have communities. And there's still images without Alt-text. There's still Linux live images that don't even have Orca on it. These distro communities still expect blind people, which have been thrust aside for the past 20 years, to come to them with their... feedback. Such a clinical word that's become.

Look, even if it's a community from the bottom up, who's at the bottom? I assure you, it won't be blind people. And if you splenter up that community and tell us to make our own distros, well, we've tried that. Vinux, Sonar, F123, Blinux. All gone. You know which distros support us the most? Debian/Ubuntu, Mint, and Arch. With Fedora you still have to enable accessibility variables last time I checked around V37 or 38.

When you say "everyone," what do you mean by that? Your group? Your group and adjacent groups? All people? Do you know about all people? Do you know about blind people? Or Deaf people?

devinprater,

@objectinspace @dennou_reijuu19 Well they sure love donations right? I mean, I don't know how much NV Access gets from users, but foss devs could maybe care about having a little more money from loyal users.

devinprater,

@ParanoidFactoid The app you use will hopefully have a "scan text" or "OCR" option. You can use that to get most of the way there.
