It’s Monday!! It’s also the three year anniversary of the release of the Mastodon-famous song “It’s Always Monday On The Moon”

Written for future moon workers spending long hours doing dangerous work in a lethal environment, my song is about how quickly the enthusiasm for a job like this may disappear quickly due to the isolation and monotonous routine.

We’re in the final hours of voting in !

Have you voted for your favourite three entries yet?

dgar,
@dgar@aus.social avatar

@RosePuckey
You can, at your own discretion, cast one, two, or three votes, but there are seventy-two entries, so you might as well use all three!!

Reviewing is daunting, an endeavour that’s taken days, but it’s really satisfying to listen carefully to each song and write something about it.

I’ve added a link to my review thread, and have added other review threads in the comments.

While everyone's songs were awesome (and I really struggled sorting!) my top seven are:

“The Roses Outside Grow Suspiciously Red”
by @Dace
Code MIRR
I loved the imagery, the guitar and bass are awesome, and it will probably live in my head, rent free, forever

“Face the Fire”
by @simonvey
Code TAUS
The guitar intro absolutely slapped, lovely lyrics, and cool harmonies.

“Crimson Tide”
by @brindy
Code THRO
Adored the medieval/renn faire vibes and the vocals were beautiful.

“She's all of Me”
by @MTP
Code INTK
This song gave me such Frank Iero "She’s The Prettiest Girl at the Party, and She Can Prove It With a Solid Right Hook" vibes! So pretty!

“Versio”
by @Cobalt
Code COBA
This song was so chill and I loved the incorporation of different language, definitely got stuck in my head.

“All Zombies Go To Heaven”
by @dgar
Code DIZZ
This song is so much fun and unique - everybody should have a zombie song.

“Fire Me Straight Into A Falling Star”
by @sakti
Code BELT
Loved the builds in this song and the vocals - I wasn't expecting them to sound the way they did, but it's rad!

nb, I really have to sit down and figure out how I feel about synthetic vocalists…

Playing guitar, piano, drums, etc is also an art form. I play and sing everything I can, but drums are a mystery to me. If I’m unable to get help from another artist with drums, I usually resort to the “Drummer” feature in Logic. Considering in this case that no-one is playing a real drum, no real person is physically playing the instrument, I find it difficult to dismiss the efforts of an artist for doing basically the same thing simply because it’s vocals. I understand that the latest version of Logic has added similar algorithmic generated Bass and Keyboard players.

My first listen of the generated vocals had me fooled and impressed. When I found out it was generated, I immediately went to YouTube to learn about the software used - Dreamtonics Synthesizer V Pro. The samples on YouTube are pretty good, but I can definitely appreciate how much work would’ve been involved in getting them to sound as good as they do on “Federation”. It’s a bit more than just feeding in the lyrics and clicking “sing”.

That said, while I’m not tempted to use generated vocals myself, I’m keenly aware that this tech is only getting better, and I feel that trying to stop it, or stop people from using it, would be a pointless waste of time and effort. Machine learning has been added to almost everything in the past few years since they had AI beat the world’s best Go players and Warcraft players, and an AI generated image won a photography contest. Over the next few years you’ll find it in your synthesiser keyboards, mixing desks, and I’m betting, every single DAW will have AI features.

In a world where you can generate an entire song, music video, and album cover artwork, from a single text prompt, I can definitely appreciate the actual craftsmanship that has gone into the vocal synthesis on Federation.
