I really ought to have a bio, but I never know what to write. You can probably get a feel for who I am by just reading a few of my toots TBH.

I'm honestly dreading the inevitable AOLification of Mastodon

I wonder if we can persuade @darius to not implement the new anti-features in hometown and then just all move to that fork?

You asked for it, and it’s coming. Quote posts, search, and groups are on their way. In the meantime, check out the new onboarding experience launching today. https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2023/05/a-new-onboarding-experience-on-mastodon/

The first two are unwelcome - search should be opt-in, or you'll get the worst of bird-site over here...

In TinyCore, every extension (like a package) mounts as its own loop volume! That means I can easily have 100 volumes mounted at any one time!

Trying out KeePassXC on Linux for the first time since many years ago. And I must say, I really like it so far!

@RL_Dane
Same. I synchronise the databases to my phone externally and use KeePassDX there (from FDroid).

Is anyone using ? Is there a way to follow a bunch of channels and have their videos show up on a personalised home page?

dheadshot,
@dheadshot@mastodon.social avatar

@meljoann Presumably so if you're on an instance that federates with all those channels' instances?

dheadshot,
@dheadshot@mastodon.social avatar

@meljoann As I say, you'd need to find a instance that federates with the channels you're interested in. You could even set up you're own.... but it would be easier to just build something that takes the RSS feeds that Peertube channels povide and use that instead...

dheadshot,
@dheadshot@mastodon.social avatar

@meljoann I know @RL_Dane uses a lot. Tagging him in to see if he has any thoughts...

@shoq
Hmm, so they're still cracking down on competitors then?

BTW, Just so you know, Calkey has nothing to do with Mastodon (it's based on MissKey), it just bases on the activitypub protocol and Mastodon does the same - the protocol is independent of Mastodon.

dheadshot,
@dheadshot@mastodon.social avatar

@shoq
Sorry, I read the Twitter thread and it sounded like you were saying that calckey was a Mastodon fork.

    I had to "e-sign" my job contract. With a mouse. In mspaint (then upload). I'm not sure that's how it's supposed to work though.

    @thomasfuchs Oh, there! Fedilab 2.x breaks the spec and fetches them anyway and the latest version has a button to do that, so I rarely have that issue, but I can see how it causes problems for most users...

    I was surprised to find this in my mailbox this morning, as I had forgotten about ordering it.
    I was pining for physical keyboards last week, and wishing I had bought a Blackberry when they were cheap AND still usable.

    Unfortunately, the experience with this one was just bad. The keys are mushy, and there's no autocorrect when using BT keyboard (or maybe there is and I have to find out where to turn it on)

    Maybe I should buy a used Blackberry, just to see what they were like.

    dheadshot,
    @dheadshot@mastodon.social avatar

    @RL_Dane
    You can get the BlackBerry keypads for electronics projects: you could build a pocket computer that's BlackBerry-like?

    dheadshot,
    @dheadshot@mastodon.social avatar

    @RL_Dane
    They're a component, I've seen them on various maker shops (I think Adafruit might have been one of them?). You'd need to either interface directly with an SBC or use a TeensyLC to make them USB...

    dheadshot,
    @dheadshot@mastodon.social avatar

    @RL_Dane
    They might have been i2c or something like that? Don't remember exactly...

    Tech bros love to whine about "The EU cookie policy" that simply doesn't exist the way they imagine it. All these popups are the most radical way to interpret the explicit consent demanded by regulations when sending data to a 3rd party or collecting personal data by the site itself. An ongoing provocation by the ad/tracker industry to blame their ruthless data hoarding on the EU.

    dheadshot,
    @dheadshot@mastodon.social avatar

    @jwildeboer I thought you had to have that for sites you log into though? If your site is only for browsing, it shouldn't have cookies at all, so your point stands, but for the cases where they are collecting data (logins) for their own processing (using the site), they still have to show a cookie confirmation...
