Ah the joys of *uck-typing. Overnight run with a scikit learn model, trying 3240 different parameters, with code reporting progress regularly and at the end

"All the 3240 fits failed.
It is very likely that your model is misconfigured." - one column had the wrong type.

If you've ever read about design, you've probably encountered the idea of . A is an erosion path created by people departing from the official walkway and taking their own route. The story goes that smart campus planners don't fight the desire paths laid down by students; they pave them, formalizing the route that their constituents have voted for with their feet.

1/

A photo of a 'desire path' - a path worn through the turf in a park where people have left the paved path and worn away the grass. The image crossfades so that the grassy lawn of the park is replaced by a 'code waterfall' as seen in the credit sequences of the Wachowskis' 'Matrix' movies. @dewill90 @pluralistic - absolutely. My recent peer has been the United post flight surveys. They’ll grill you on whether the employee gave you the embarrassingly small pretzel in a pleasing way without getting feedback on the whole rotting mess that is their overall operation.

This Q&A is so clear, simple and easy to understand that it would be a crime for you not to take this economics crash course.

It will take you 10 minutes, and it will feel like upgrading from doing accounting on clay tablets to using Excel:

TIOBE Index for January 2024

January Headline:

C# is programming language of the year 2023!

https://www.tiobe.com/tiobe-index/

dplattsf,
@dplattsf@sfba.social avatar

@J_aa_p - I've long suspected the might also be largely noise.. just a hunch

dplattsf,
@dplattsf@sfba.social avatar

@J_aa_p it isn’t ?

dplattsf,
@dplattsf@sfba.social avatar

@J_aa_p I’ve flown back and forth over the big pond and never noticed anything. It does strange things to DateTime calculations. And yes I’m happy for C# and on a bulk level Tiobe is probably roughly right for the big langs but I start thinking about how they tell F# programmers from Beethoven enthusiasts and how squishy modern search engines are and it just seems fraught. The RedMonk methodology feels safer https://redmonk.com/sogrady/2022/03/28/language-rankings-1-22/

dplattsf,
@dplattsf@sfba.social avatar

@J_aa_p your anecdote about usage also seems to be borne out in the data. declining SO usage - but also puzzling felines in github PRs

dplattsf,
@dplattsf@sfba.social avatar

@J_aa_p it has encouraged me to write better comments. The thing about SO is always to remember to copy the code in the answer not the question. Have made that mistake too many times. “hey that’s just like my code but they did this neat thing I haven’t tried yet”. so you copy more wrong code :)

Hey All, just wondering if any of you have had experience with this:

My husband was feeling a little under the weather and took 4 Covid tests. The first one was negative, the second had a very faint line, and the second two were negative. I took two also, both of which were negative. I'm not really sure what to make of it. He works from home and everyone in the house has gotten every booster, obviously we are gonna stay put and test again tomorrow. Has anyone had this happen to them?

dplattsf,
@dplattsf@sfba.social avatar

@RickiTarr those tests, have a very low false positive rate. I would take it seriously especially in conjunction with symptoms
Might be tail end of an infection or about to grow. Open windows, fresh air, and lots of masks.

⚠️ 23andMe just sent out an email trying to trick customers into accepting a TOS change that will prevent you from suing them after they literally lost your genome ro thieves.

Do what it says in the email and email arbitrationoptout@23andme.com that you do not agree with the new terms of service and opt out of arbitration.

If you have an account with them, do this right now.

Here’s an email template for what to write: https://www.patreon.com/posts/94164861

dplattsf,
@dplattsf@sfba.social avatar

@thomasfuchs they were hacked ? I read that it was customers reusing passwords that were stolen on other sites. (disclosure : worked there eons ago, but they took security incredibly seriously).

dplattsf,
@dplattsf@sfba.social avatar

@thomasfuchs @pjohanneson Maybe fine point none of their security was compromised. 14,000 users with same password and email reused on multiple sites were accessed. If you use same password in 12 places and one of the sites get compromised , I don’t consider the other 11 sites to be “hacked”. What amplified the damage was people sharing their DNA with others so more genomes were exposed, but again the users all agreed to share.

dplattsf,
@dplattsf@sfba.social avatar

@pjohanneson @thomasfuchs and ps you have copies of your DNA lying around everywhere all the time. I can’t get too outraged. The quiet TOS update seems line maybe their lawyers giving them bad advice though.

dplattsf,
@dplattsf@sfba.social avatar

@pjohanneson @dko @thomasfuchs have you been to haveibeenpwned lately? The only thing that distinguishes this from a typical day on the internet is that it has the word dna in it and they didn’t even get hacked. Going to save up my outrage ..

dplattsf,
@dplattsf@sfba.social avatar

@dko @thomasfuchs @pjohanneson same reason your bank is still using sms for 2fa. people get upset if you force them to do it the right way. and they get outraged if you don’t. This would be the perfect setup for on and hygiene

dplattsf,
@dplattsf@sfba.social avatar

@dko @thomasfuchs @pjohanneson just trying to understand the outrage and indignation here - again they’re well within the norm for orgs and they also didn’t get any of their systems breached so saying they were hacked is misinformation. They have normal users doing normal bad things. but it’s dna so .. .. .. must be so much worse ? People need recalibration.

I really like the new Lyft e-bikes. Finally they are bikes worth riding

dplattsf,
@dplattsf@sfba.social avatar

@skinnylatte i’ve been experimenting with lyft bikes while I wait for bike repairs and the 30 cents per minute for the e-bike gives me docking anxiety plus I start to question the moral hazard of paying for speed (all irrational and their non e bikes are a real workout). If I’d known how long bike repair would take I would have become a subscriber :(
