Our grief ridden reality

duckwhistle,
@duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@JonKramer @Radical_EgoCom @LaNaehForaday every single corona vaccine was developed through funding from government created money. Capitalist companies are not responsible for that.

duckwhistle,
@duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@JonKramer @Radical_EgoCom @LaNaehForaday
Nope, when currency issuing governments spend money they create it.

duckwhistle,
@duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@JonKramer @LaNaehForaday @Radical_EgoCom that's what I'm talking by harder things, destroying what we have is relatively easy compared to making sure people don't just replace it with an almost identical system.

Um Neutral good I think.

duckwhistle,
@duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@bigheadtales @SusanHR @elduvelle you know you're living in a two party state when your political alignment options are less complicated than those available in D&D.

Does anyone know of any thatchers? My grand uncle’s straw thatched cottage is getting into a bit of a state now and we don’t want it to get so bad that it’s irreparable. Would appreciate boosts, thanks!

duckwhistle,
@duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@devxvda @nena it depends on the insurer, but well maintained thatch isn't actually a significant fire risk. It's when it gets loose and straggly that's the problem, so insurers that do cover it usually have a maintenance clause. That means they have to employ a specialist accesor in the event of a claim.

I’m simultaneously blown away and saddened by the images of desolate planets and moons posted by ‪@nasa‬.

Blown away because, hey, gloriously clear images of good-lord-look-at-that.

Saddened because our perfect jewel of a planet—unique in our neighborhood in its ability to sustain life and love—is being murdered by a species too stupid and selfish to appreciate its miraculous good fortune.

@FediThing @shawrd773 @gavinisdie @BodyofBreen @nasa
I forgot the guys details, but I saw an interview with an expert on environmental disaster survival and recovery. He said he was hired to give a presentation on surviving climate change by a group of mega rich. He started to talk about mitigation techniques to prevent the worst disasters, but all they where interested in is how to preserve their wealth and power post apocalypse!

@pivoinebleue I love that Americans used pissed as short for pissed off, when Brits use it as slang for drunk. It makes for some interesting headline readings.

Sometimes debating with non-Anarchist can be frustrating.

duckwhistle,
@duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@Radical_EgoCom do you not like people wanting to distinguish between thinking someone has a bad idea, and thinking they have a nice but unachievable one?
Or is it you suspect they don't think it's achievable because most people don't fully understand the anachist position.

duckwhistle,
@duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@SocialistStan @Radical_EgoCom I've found that most people talk like anarchists when asked about generalities but tend towards sounding authoritarian if you start the discussion talking about specifics, especially conservatives and communists.
Not because they are more likely to prefer that way, it's just their ideal is more dependant on what others are doing around them.

Radical_EgoCom, to random

Maybe they're just not voting hard enough?

duckwhistle,
@duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@nando161 @Radical_EgoCom
They're trying.

duckwhistle,
@duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@oblomov @nando161 @Radical_EgoCom
It's proof it has enough of an effect to frustrate some members of the political classes. That's not the same as being effective to bring about real structural change. Certainly not in a two party system using FPTP.

duckwhistle,
@duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@ju_and_the_cats @oblomov @Radical_EgoCom @nando161 different systems can make voting more effective, but you always need activism.
Even with ranked choice voting they have ways of staking the deck to keep power in the hands of politicians. Just look at Australia where you have to rank dozens of candidates and if you miss one your vote gets rejected, or you vote for the party list and the Party Leadership decides who gets elected!

Radical_EgoCom, to random

Agree or Disagree?

duckwhistle,
@duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@Radical_EgoCom
Getting the police &/ military involved might be what swings a violent confrontation, but even if dissatisfied with the current government following orders is so ingrained they are too succeptable to being subverted to replacing one government with a worse one.
3.5% of the population is usually enough to force concessions with non violent protest, but for systemic change I suspect you require a good deal more.

This is the message. Shout it from the rooftops and beat the GOP to death with it.

duckwhistle,
@duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@freemo @SrRochardBunson
That's not how government budgets work. Especially not for Neoliberalist like the GOP.
If you insist on not creating additional money, you either have to match taxation to spending or you have to increase borrowing. The US is very weird in that it tries to treat borrowing as something completely independent of its budget.

Radical_EgoCom, to random

Very poetic!

duckwhistle,
@duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@reay @Radical_EgoCom they're drain covers not potholes, the routes of these things are actually some of the best maintained roads in the country. Because we can afford to do these things, but the UK is the most centralised democracy in the world, and Westminster won't allow local government to be properly funded.

duckwhistle,
@duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@reay @Radical_EgoCom sorry manhole covers. Not only drains but also phone lines, cable TV, gas, Electric, & mains water. They all have service point access in the middle of the road for some daft reason.

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2023/apr/30/on-brexit-will-no-one-in-the-major-parties-admit-that-britain-has-blundered

duckwhistle,
@duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@mkwadee if Neither the tories nor Labour are willing to state it. It's worth remembering that the 3rd most popular party by Westminster seats, the 3rd most popular party by share of the national vote, and the 3rd most popular party by current polling, all say Brexit was a mistake.

duckwhistle,
@duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@mkwadee Sure, but if we end up with a minority Labour government (supposedly more likely than it has ever been🤷‍♂️), they could push the initiating of joining EFTA.

duckwhistle,
@duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@mkwadee Actually we had a collision government in 2010. A Minority government is when the largest party tries to rule ALONE without a majority of seats.
Also it was a majority government elected in 2015, which have us the brexit referendum.

@Skembear @DrALJONES @PamCrossland fun fact! quantitative easing was invented by Japan in the late 90s and is just a way making money creation really complicated so the public don't question why it's all being handed to those who already have wealth invested in profitable companies, rather than being directly invested in the people.
