Seeing him desperately trying to convince himself that "it'll all be different once they're in power" is tragic.

Convincing yourself to support a party because you trust them not to do the things they say they will do once in power, is an... "interesting" point of view.

    I used to think the media industry was good, but I view it in a more cynical light now, much like the tech industry. Glowing screens to placate the masses. A fake life by proxy. Corporate propaganda (advertising) to fund it all. It's the only industry that can lull you into consuming more of its own output.

    St Vincent’s Hospital to be insolvent by April

    https://www.thesaturdaypaper.com.au/news/health/2023/12/23/exclusive-st-vincents-hospital-be-insolvent-april

    How can any hospital in Australia be allowed to be insolvent in a nation that freely creates its own sovereign currency?

    They don't have to somehow 'find' the money, or tax it or borrow it from anyone, the Federal government just spends it into existence, ... or deliberately, politically, ideologically ... chooses not to.

    It really is that simple. I'm sure Rick Morton knows that.

    @peterrelph2 @DrALJONES I'm not sure that it's just that they don't want to know.
    I expect they've made a decision to work within the popularly accepted framework, because they can point out that neoliberal economics doesn't even work on it's own grounds. Unfortunately that does mean they are perpetuating neoliberal mythology and I think they'll eventually regret it, but I can see the argument behind not trying to learn and explain a whole economic philosophy whilst running their campaign.

    In iScotland the People will be sovereign and not the Parliament. It follows that anyone elected on a specific party manifesto will be constitutionally required to step down immediately and a by-election called, when they can put their money where their mouth is and stand on the manifesto of the party to which they've jumped ship.

    I elected an SNP MP and ended up with a Tory MP. Because they and Westminster are above the People.

    duckwhistle,
    @duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk avatar

    @peterbrown @MadeyeTheCarnaptious
    Exactly, to much subservience to political parties is why the Australian parliament, despite what looks like a more democratic election method, is not noticeably better at representing the Australian people.

    You don't need to be violent towards people voting for Nazis. The people loudly and proudly promoting fascist ideals, and calling others to violence however, they should be met with a swift kick to the chops. Then anyone thinking they might like to dish out a bit a violence to the vulnerable will not be able to kid themselves only the vulnerable will get hurt.

    @maricn @magitweeter @Radical_EgoCom
    Where you draw the line on any individual case is a difficult decision, and anyone who tells you it is not definitely shouldn't be making that decision.
    The whole idea of a police force is to nominate a group of trusted people to make that decision, but like any entrenched power, it is vulnerable to corruption.

    Healthy people need less healthcare over all, even if they live longer.
    This is because with most ailments age doesn't increase your chances of getting sick, but it does make it harder to recover.
    This means if you are old and healthy, you have a below average chance of getting a debilitating illness and an above average chance of dying if you do.

    Spot the pattern:
    2020: Biden can't win. (Biden wins.)
    2022: Biden to be slammed in midterms. (Dems do great.)
    Off-year elections: Biden in peril. (Dems win even in many red states.)
    2021-2023: Biden can't get past GOP in Congress. (Biden achieves more legislative wins than any Dem in 60 years.)
    2020-2024: Biden too old. (Biden more successful at presidenting than every single younger predecessor since WWII. Which is all of them.)
    If you're stuck, let me know and I'll help you with the math.

    We must scream at the top of lungs, and shame any who dare, try to defend the conventional orthodox economic machine that is tearing our children’s future down around their ears. !!!

    2°C is actually a politically accepted threshold.
    There are multiple systems affecting planetary temperature and Positive and negative feed back loops exist all the time. Each system switches at different thresholds most of which we have significant variance on the estimates, so we can't say precisely what temperature they start. Add to that that many systems are regional and the globe is heating unevenly it's an impossible prediction but 2°C falls inside many variances.

    duckwhistle,
    @duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk avatar

    @lienrag @LeftistLawyer
    This is the best article I can locate. I've read some other justifications for 2°C from a scientific viewpoint but I don't really keep track.
