@Radical_EgoCom
Even if the phrased it "least harm" it would still be misleading.

So the vast majority of purported UFO sighting around the world have been in the USA and the UK. Who'd have thought it? 🤔

I see that the hellsite has been rebranded to 'X'.

This a guy who named one of his children 'X AE A-XII' and another one 'Exa Dark Sideræl' so Elmo clearly has some sort of nominative disability.

I have to say that the new logo is pretty underwhelming. It looks like something he ran up himself on Microsoft Paint.

bad reply guys are one of fedi/mastodon’s biggest problems.

I’m realizing it’s not only a demographic issue but a structural one with the platform. if people cannot easily see one another’s replies, and if the original poster can’t easily QT replies, someone with a popular post has to field dozens of nearly identical replies. if these replies enforce white supremacy or patriarchy (spoiler: they often do), the structure of mastodon tends to center and amplify white supremacy &patriarchy

duckwhistle,
@duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@seachanger if the problem is that those posts can't be seen, how can it also be a problem that those same posts are being amplified?

CNN: "Sweden allows protest burning Torahs and Bibles outside Israeli Embassy"

There was a public burning of the Quran outside Stockholm's central mosque at the end of June.

This is deeply hateful and awful. Minorities of whatever type should be respected.

I can't get to the bottom of why they are burning Bibles. Are they burning New Testaments as well as Old (Jewish) Testaments?

Minimum wage increases and so does the price of products

duckwhistle,
@duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@Radical_EgoCom the price of products increases independently of minimum wage. (If it was hard linked Japan could have solved their deflation problem instantly)
Data from the Office for National Statistics in the UK shows that minimum wage isn't significant in it's current inflation cycle.

I posted last week about how a firm called Copytrack is claiming I illegally used a photo their client took on my blog

I responded stating no, I took the photo, and gave them the original file inc. EXIF to show it - 6 years earlier than claimant said it was taken

Now they're beginning legal procedures against me!

Digging further I’ve found the pic dated 2009 on Flickr

duckwhistle,

@jon no amount of proof is enough, since they don't actually care about the ability to win a court case. The purpose is to intimidate you into paying a settlement.
You'll probably have to hire a lawyer to get them to back off.

Wildfire smoke - now extra toxic plumes from sun UV

Did you know just one of the many fires burning in Quebec is the size of an entire Canadian province (PEI), or large enough to stretch between the cities of Ottawa and Montreal or Toronto to Niagara Falls? Read on to learn more about why the smoke now smells like plastic and the health impact. 🧵 1/

All though I'm not sure how long I'd have before the electric company kicks my front door down and installs a Prepay meter. I expect I'd do better paying some of the electric bill, so 6 to 7 months tops.

Our grief ridden reality

duckwhistle,
@duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@JonKramer @Radical_EgoCom @LaNaehForaday collecing taxes destroys money, reducing the supply. If you put more money into the economy than their is demand for, you get inflation. Take too much out and you get deflation (and often unofficial currencies circulating).
Its part of Modern Monetary Theory (MMT), and it's mathematically sound.
MMT is much better for modeling economics than Neoliberalism, but like all economic theory it is lacking in the human behavioural aspect.

@Benfell @Radical_EgoCom well, yes and no.
Common perception of anarchy is that it means no social structure whatsoever. So whilst it's technically redundant,it's also a necessary qualifier to aid understanding.

duckwhistle,
@duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@Benfell @hosford42 @Radical_EgoCom I read about a study that found ~30% of a given population will be conservative. That is they will exhibit empathy only towards those in their group, and will tend to perceive those outside the group primarily as a potential threat. Apparently this was fairly constant across all societies regardless of how tolerant of differences (gender, sex, race, class, religion, etc.) they were internally.
That suggests two things:
1/3

duckwhistle,
@duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@Benfell @hosford42 @Radical_EgoCom

  1. Making a society more tolerant will always be resisted by a significant portion of the population.
  2. Once you can get those people to accept a minority into their "in group" they will be inclined to protect the vulnerable rather than persecute them.

Unfortunately it was behind a paywall so I only read a preview & never saved a link, but to me that says change is possible, and it never gets any easier. Which fits in with my lived experience.
2/3

duckwhistle,
@duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@Cassandra @Benfell @hosford42 @Radical_EgoCom that 30% don't always need a "them".
They are however very susceptible to Us vs Them politics in situations of scarcity. Without massive inequality & a culture of greed they are as content as the next guy.

duckwhistle,
@duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@glitzersachen @Benfell @hosford42 they are harness the power of individual actors within the state, and whilst their actions are reducing the power of the state, at each step those individuals are increasing, or at least believe themselves to be increasing,their own individual power.
I suppose you could say they are trading the political power of the state for their own economic power. Anyone inclined to betray the state for personal gain will abandon communism for even greater personal gain.
