Jewish themed account focused on diaspora issues w/ minimal related Israel content.

Even if the entire world tells you that you are a Tzaddik consider yourself like a Rasha

Things I will mock you for: antisemitism definition and Levant indigenaity debates, shitty holocaust takes, good Jew bad Jew bullshit, glorifying the death rattle of assimilation.

Hobbies: wandering, rootless cosmopolitaning, well poisoning, making matzo out of... er... stuff, performing talmudic rituals

This Germany place sounds a lot like the internet. 🥸

"The case highlights the role of #Jews in the #German popular imagination. “This is a widespread situation, especially in #Germany, that people make themselves out to be Jews or see themselves as such, although they are not,” German #Jewish historian Julius Schoeps said in a report last month about “Jewish fake identities and the question of ‘why’” on Deutschlandfunk radio."

This is like sanitizing Roald Dahl and Agatha Christie books of their and . Disappearing this stuff doesn't actually make things better and it quite likely obscures reality in ways that will bite us in the ass.

"A German church has been urged to remove a controversial antisemitic sculpture.

The 13th century "Judensau" or "Jew Sow" on Wittenberg town church depicts a caricature of a rabbi lifting the tail of a sow and two Jewish children suckling on the teats."

sigh we're still talking about this I guess...

Jamie Foxx didn't say something anti-semitic. He said something people thought was anti-semitic.

Because they weren't familiar with his phrase, and he wasn't familiar with the anti-semitic dog-whistle.

He apologized for being misunderstood, not for being anti-semitic.

Yes, it is very good that he clarified.

dukepaaron,
@dukepaaron@babka.social avatar

@mekkaokereke you're just describing how dogwhistles work. Whether he understood it or not doesn't negate it being antisemitic.

dukepaaron,
@dukepaaron@babka.social avatar

@havn @mekkaokereke oh ffs.

Not understanding 2000 years of christian Jewish decide accusations is on the Christian saying it not on the Jews receiving it.

dukepaaron,
@dukepaaron@babka.social avatar

@mekkaokereke I think what you're missing is that it doesn't matter why or how it's used. It matters where it's rooted from.

There are anti-black racist elements embedded in the Babylonian Talmud and in several oareas of Maimonides writings. When people use then they invariably think they're related to strangers or others but with a little inspection the origins are racist (specifically not reinterpreted for modern sensibility). That's on Jews to understand and grapple with.

Trying to argue the terminology isn't rooted in very readily understandable and obvious Christian theology is dubious at best.

Some Jews used to say a bracha when they met a black person. It was racist. But my bubbe would certainly argue it wasn't if she was alive and I'm sure she would believe that too.

@Mabande @mekkaokereke where exactly do you think common expressions about who killed jesus come from?

dukepaaron,
@dukepaaron@babka.social avatar

@mekkaokereke @Mabande @emilyk oh great. I really was trying to make a point about origins of common expressions and not paint Jamie Foxx prlersonally as a bad guy.

"As president of SAG-AFTRA, Drescher heads up a union that owes its early success in part to another #Jewish comic, Groucho Marx. When the Screen Actors Guild was first established in July 1933, it lacked negotiating power. Groucho Marx was one of the first major stars to leave the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and throw his support behind SAG in October 1933, after it came to light that studio executives had lobbied the U.S. government to restrict actor pay — but not their own — as part of FDR’s Great Depression recovery plans."

The plaintiffs failed to prove that they are harmed by these laws, the judge ruled.

Also I miss Bashevkin:

“Twitter serves as this place where we can kind of pass notes across the mechitza,” Bashevkin, 38, said, referring to the physical barrier between men and women in some synagogues. “Normally in the Jewish world we have these boundaries — important boundaries — but it was a place where it was appropriate to interact with those from outside of your community and almost build friendships.”

When anyone spends their resources making something and then gives it away for free they should be greeted firstly with gratitude. They should be greeted secondly with gratitude. They should be greeted lastly with gratitude.

Too much community rage and contributor burnout stems from a strange forgetfulness that no one has to contribute anything this way. It's always a wonder. Let's chill out and be a little more kind and a lot more grateful.

dukepaaron,
