The AI hype sometimes reminds me of 1970s foods.

People actually thought dishes like โ€œAvocado Jelly Waldorf with Mayonnaiseโ€ were decent and a good idea.

@mikey @KanaMauna @thomasfuchs I can't say I've tried them. I have had other agar based jellied confections. My impression is agar works but can't get as stiffly gelled as the meat based stuff. It's a small sacrifice overall for avoiding prion diseases.

First, itโ€™s great that @MichaelWhelan is on Mastodon. What an amazing artist.

Second, his recent post featured a spherical alien that I instantly recognized from my childhood. https://mastodon.art/@MichaelWhelan/112428886103083708

Itโ€™s from this book, published in 1980, which had a cover image that is also burned into my brain.

I am down to 30 copies (as of May 18) of Six Centuries of Type & Printing, a letterpress-printed book in an edition of 425. The book traces printing with type before Gutenberg through the present day across all technological developments. Typeset in hot metal in North Yorkshire, printed in London, bound in Germany, the hardcover book is covered in green cloth and comes in a slipcase of the same fabric. https://glog.glennf.com/tiny-type-museum-time-capsule-and-more/six-centuries-letterpress Some copies remain with Tiny Type Museum slipcase stamping.

It appears I have radiation burns.

I spent an hour and a half with unsatisfactory shielding just minutes away from a G2V class fusion reactor.

elithebearded,
@elithebearded@fed.qaz.red avatar

@NanoRaptor Hereabouts the common recommendation for that sort of thing is aloe vera applied topically. Not sure if thats the local (to you) cure. For all I know the Aussie cure is dettol and a pint.

Either way, do be careful around those reactors. They have been known to cause cancer.

Tried to use "identify" from imagemagick to find out some details about a .mkv video file. It failed but left a 18G file in /tmp filling the partition and causing strange errors in other programs until I figured out what happened.

Nice job there.

@richardloxley @brouhaha @BRicker @foone Some commercial Unixes (thinking Digital in particular) shipped with /bin/true as a zero length file. The system would run it as a shell script and it would exit successfully while ignoring all command line options, which is all true is meant to do.

all this panic over xz v5.6.x and my macOS mojave brew install won't even upgrade past 5.4 ๐Ÿ˜Ž

for the first time in 10 years, brew's obsession with only working well on the latest macOS has saved my ass.

@vga256 People at work who had upgraded packages in the past week report that "brew update" today is downgrading back to 5.4.6. Internally we are accepting with caveats 5.4 and only consider pre 5.2.12 (last version not touched by this contributor) fully safe.

People who are surprised to learn Mastodon admin can technically snope on direct messages always need reminders that the same is true everywhere (that doesn't promise direct to recipient encryption). Here's an article about Facebook sharing private messages with Netflix (and Spotify mentioned as well). The access seems to have been from about August 2013 until Facebook turned on encryption in 2018.
