Am I the only one who's bothered by the "covid is making everyone stupider" discourse? Yes there is credible research showing significant post-covid cognitive slowing (even in the absence of other long covid symptoms). But there's something particularly and insidiously ableist about the way it keeps getting presented as a gotcha.

elmyra,
@elmyra@wandering.shop avatar

I think part of it is the "well even if you're not one of those people with long covid it's still bad" - it feels like further marginalisation of folks with long covid. And the other part is the way intellectual disabilities are still treated even in parts of the disability rights community, let alone in wider society. It's still acceptable to insult someone at stupid or an idiot, and this just feeds into that.

If you’re worried about Covid, come to Ireland. Here, Covid starts at 50. That’s why we don’t provide boosters to anyone under that age.

    @dave risk increases with repeated infection: 38% by your third infection. This is not something individuals can "make plans" for, this is what public health is for, except we have gutted that. Demand better from your legislators and from society.

    @tomkindlon @mecfs hmm I'm not a fan of "we should move away from outcome measures that rely on patient self-reporting". That requires trust in the medical/scientific establishment that is currently completely unearned.

    @tomkindlon @mecfs hybrid measures, maybe, within limits of patient safety. Eg. CPET should be outright banned in diagnosis and clinical trials involving ME patients.

    Rewatching Dream of Splendor right now and remember what a beautifully made drama this was. I grieve a little because so many directors rarely bother to make of this quality anymore. 😭

    @Edent@mastodon.social avatar

    Those of you who have a #SmartHome, what are your use-cases for smart plugs?

    Most of my electrical things aren't just on/off.

    I've got a light, a fan, and an electric blanket which can be controlled from the plug.

    Other things (like TV, kettle, etc) need interaction after the power is turned on.

    Have you found any good uses for #IoT plugs?

    (Not interested in rants about security & privacy, thanks.)

    elmyra,
    @elmyra@wandering.shop avatar

    @Edent I considered getting one to manage my greenhouse cabinet. It has two fans that are on 24/7 and two sets of grow lights on timers. Ultimately found a (clunky) non-IoT solution though.

    Unpopular opinion: I like daylight savings time. I live far enough north (52°) that without it the sun would rise at 3 am in summer and set at 3 pm in winter.

    Having said that, a lot of the problems people have aren't actually with DST, they're with the fact that we're being forced to comply with Capitalist Time rather than being able to listen to our bodies and live with nature.

    Quote:

    "Keep out of 'spray range,'" is the warning given to residents of Boston by Health Commissioner Woodward [...]

    In explaining his meaning of the phrase "spray range," the commissioner said that by the operation of coughing and sneezing a person suffering from the epidemic can send germs into the air for a distance of from eight to 15 feet. A well person standing within this rage can be readily infected by breathing in these germs. For this reason he urges the public to be on guard against getting into crowds or even conversing in the open air with persons who may be infected.

    It isn't even necessary for the infected person to cough or sneeze, according to the commissioner, in order to infect well persons within "spray range." The mere pronunciation of such letters as t, d, p and many others will send germs into the air for a considerable distance."

    @siderea thank you for this thread, it's extremely illuminating. It also puts me in mind of that time my cat had a very unusual kidney condition and the specialist vet went and read a bunch of research. That's when I realised that my cats were getting better healthcare than me, and yeah in light of your analysis that makes perfect sense.
