I make electronics go beep boop and tools go spinny. Also, I pet cats sometimes.

@Gina My favorite s[pc]ammer ever was the one who called me and diligently continued through his script while I answered every question with some variant of "fuck off" or "aaaaaaa", until we both burst into laughter two minutes in and he told me to have a blessed day.

It was the most wholesome scamming attempt.

Getting the urge again to make a home-assistant replacement that does not try to be "user-friendly", and makes itself computer-person-friendly instead.

Like, automation for people who know what code is and don't want to do Software Engineering all the time but aren't afraid to write a 5-line script when the task is obviously a programming task of some sort that could be easily solved with a 5-line script.

@farewellwanderlust @scrummy @gardening I didn't sniff it (and can't, already threw it out in the yard for whatever confused squirrel thought that was a good place to store it).

First time I've seen one here, or in person at all. I didn't expect them to be so big.

A rogue regex must have gotten hold of this license text at some point, but I think it made it more poetic.

emily,

@joeycastillo more legalese should be written as poetry tbh

Mate of mine was telling his kid "Hey, be careful, don't trip over the wire!" and then he got up and tripped over the wire himself so I get to fix a mouse today lol.

He really yanked on this thing! To the point where the metal part of the USB connector went sideways and tore off the wires inside. I gave it a wiggle and it popped off like a loose tooth.

emily,
@emily@sparkly.uni.horse avatar

@ifixcoinops ... it's supposed to be an EMI shielding thing encasing the other four wires, but I guess you can also do something dumb and useless instead

emily,
@emily@sparkly.uni.horse avatar

@ifixcoinops yes, usually there's a black ground wire and also a grounded shield

We planted lettuce this year, but we both found it inedibly bitter, so we just let it do its thing without harvesting or trimming it. Now it looks like a weird alien plant.

Is it true that the designers of the Arduino Uno didn't think it'd be useful to use a single port as a full 8-bit I/O and you have to make a composite thing with a lib because they used 2 bits on the D port to talk to the other uC on the board!???

😱

I miss when computers did less, but were under your control.

I really don't like this era of unknowable elder magics that unreliably produce wonders, but for which the most reliable support option amounts to hitting it with a stick any time it does something unexpected and praying it doesn't either explode or burn you alive with chromatic breath.

(My PC does nothing when I hit shutdown, then shuts down an hour later, and I've done everything admin'y possible with the next option being to reinstall the OS because <shrug>)

emily,
@emily@sparkly.uni.horse avatar

@glassbottommeg the most important advantage of modern filesystems is that you can just hold the power button down until it turns off and you probably won't corrupt anything

Dear developers of things that work with multi-file workspaces (e.g. IDEs): please make it abundantly clear when I am creating a new workspace/project/whatever whether the directory I choose is the location of the thing or the parent directory thereof.

The number of times I've guessed wrong and created ~/projects/thing/thing or had it vomit eleventy billion individual files all over ~/projects is obnoxiously high.

@hailey showed me the hifiberry and now im upset about how 'hifi' audio is advertised AGAIN

emily,
@emily@sparkly.uni.horse avatar

@jacqueline it's custom because we used a special audiophile resistor for the pullup on this digital io pin here

emily,
@emily@sparkly.uni.horse avatar

@jacqueline @sten yes, but it is equally important to round off the pointy bit at the top of the ones.

It is a common misconception that this is to make the audio less harsh. For some genres, you want harsh audio. It's more because the high data speeds in modern cables increase the risk of the bits bumping together and the zeroes getting punctured by the ones. This deflates them, turning them into o or °, and causes faint hissing and popping.

All these video streaming services and all these algorithms and all these recommendation engines and all these hundreds of tags and all these thousands of well-paid programmers and all these scores of gullible billionaires handing over money for the CEOs to set on fire and NONE

not ONE

will tell me when an episode of a show is going to be too dark to watch on a sunny afternoon.

Checking a "is show very dark" column in a database, checking the time, then popping up "Ey up Dan, watch this one a bit later on after sunset eh, you won't be able to see a bloody thing. Look, here's this other show you've been watching, this one's proper bright, have that instead maybe?" <- TECHNOLOGY BEYOND THE WILDEST IMAGINATION OF SCIENCE FICTION APPARENTLY
