Passkeys is becoming a hodge podge of crazy dialogs.

In this short nightmare I see passkey dialogs from

➡️ Google Chrome
➡️ Bitwarden
➡️ MacOS

Each with at least three to four options to choose from. Click the wrong one and you hit a dead end.

I had to try a few times before I got to the right combo.

@merill I seem to recall reading something about 1Password having an option to disable passkey prompts from the browser/OS. Seems like a good option (even better would be a way for the browser or OS to provide an option to not prompt).

@verge I almost exclusively buy cables for exactly this reason. Key specs printed clearly on the connector.

Ahh, what could go wrong with playing such a stunning game on a dark night such as this?

(This is the new virtual reality release of the 1990s spooky puzzle adventure game, “7th guest”. And I am a sucker for beautiful VR art with a splash of nostalgia. Who needs to sleep ever again? Apparently not me 😂)

@elizabethtasker Oh gods, no… that game was way too bloody creepy already! 😟 😱 😭

I always consider myself incredibly lucky that the one attempted attack on my systems was foiled by me having a sufficiently convoluted shell environment with some non-standard install paths and extra weird crap in my /etc rc files, that all the attacker’s script managed to do was drop the ransom note, then barf as soon as it tried to encrypt stuff!

    Service NSW says starting tomorrow it will scan the "Dark Web" for the email/password combination people use to log in and alert users if it finds that the credentials have leaked. I wonder what service provider it is using for this.

    endareth,
    @endareth@disobey.net avatar

    @jkirk How the fuck do they have the user passwords? Really hoping the mean they’re checking for salted hashes…

    endareth,
    @endareth@disobey.net avatar

    @jkirk @dreadpir8robots @sfunk1x That’s hardly “checking the dark web”, is it? Really seems they be better off by just providing simple usage instructions and a link to that site. “Teach a man to fish” and all that.

    Important reminder to anyone who has , particularly and : please make sure you give some thought to taking care of them in the event of your death. Ideally have it all written down somewhere and discuss it with your family and friends. Otherwise it can be a significant extra stress to your loved ones when they’re already trying to cope with everything.

    My doctor described me as "This pleasant 42 year old male" in a referral letter, and it was such a weird turn of phrase that I wondered if it was doctor code for "hypochondriac" or something.

    Anyway I looked it up and apparently it is code, but there's some dispute as to whether it means "middle class, educated" (as in, don't try to fob them off) or just "not an asshole" 😅

    @endareth@disobey.net avatar

    @nicklockwood I’ve had some similarly odd descriptions… where did you manage to find this doctor code, really intrigued now!

    The latest offering of Vampire: The Masquerade Month of Darkness include some physical goods at top tier, sounds good, ships to AU, I’m sure they offer reasonable shipping right? Bundle is $62, but still good value.
    Shipping…
    Is more than the cost of the frigging bundle.
    I can buy the main physical items of the bundle + actual normal shipping cost for less than the cost of shipping for this thing. I know what shipping options there to AU and these guys are making no effort.

    endareth,
    @endareth@disobey.net avatar

    Oh, and you can’t see the shipping costs until after purchasing the bundle.

    endareth,
    @endareth@disobey.net avatar

    Just realised the shipping cost was in USD, so the $40 USD bundle is $70 USD to ship. I’ve seen it shipping elsewhere for $15 AUD…
    Sorry, I just get really pissed at stores that just make zero effort at providing reasonable international shipping options.

    Idea for new security measure for iPhones: auto-lock and disable biometrics if phone goes out of range of Apple Watch. Yes/no

    endareth,
    @endareth@disobey.net avatar

    @hashfastr Still got Face/Touch ID at a later time though. Thinking LE taking the phone then later trying to force an unlock as well as simple theft attempts.

    And seems like the Action Button on the Apple Watch Ultra can trigger a Shortcut directly too, so there’s an interesting use case for the more security minded. Just wish there was a way to activate Lost Mode, especially as that can be remotely triggered via the Apple ID website (or other devices).
