I haven’t posted for in quite awhile, and today’s cat is not even Banana.

Please meet Messy. We met her in Sonoma last weekend. She visits the hotel where we stayed on her daily rounds. We checked, and yes she does have a house and a person. Messy takes her duties as host so seriously that she stayed up and waited for us to return to our room late at night. Then she tried to join us inside.

12/10 would pet again.

photo of the same cat, except in the day time and she is sprawled out on stone-paved ground, belly up, waiting for pets.

Bookshop West Portal just sent out an email asking people to tell SFMTA not to make any changes to the streets at West Portal Station because it would ruin their business so I guess I’m never buying anything there ever again. I can’t believe 4 people JUST died there and they actually typed up an email that said this and hit “send”: “we believe limited SFMTA resources should be directed toward the already-identified high accident sites in the city. West Portal is not one of them.” They also take a potshot at the Valencia bike lane using disproven stats, and try to use the elderly and disabled as a cudgel against traffic safety improvements.

Also, they keep talking about the tragedy of a handful of parking spaces going away, when they’re along multiple transit lines. I have only ever arrived at their bookshop via transit. Do they actually have any stats showing that only people who drive buy books there? Or is it that entitled drivers are more likely to make conversation about parking (or lack thereof)?

@bluestocking @pootriarch @sf_ish this is so profoundly disappointing, I’ve spent so much money there and was just getting excited for their independent book shop day llamapalooza.

i do hate how we talk about these issues. It’s not “I’m worried this might affect us,” it’s “this will cause us to close down.” Everyone is coming from a threat-activated emotional place and framing it as fact.

They probably will lose some customers: people around here drive three blocks to pick up pizza from Little Original Joe’s on Friday night. So why not start marketing to people who live in the Castro to come out two stops on the train? They have great author events that could be a wider draw!

West Portal feels so undiscovered and the neighbors kinda encourage it? I was in the jewelry store about getting a necklace fixed, a woman walked in, talked all about how she knew the previous owners and clearly expected some kind of special treatment. it has weird exclusive small town vibes.

PSA for all the owners out there: when we tried to file a claim with our renters insurance for @shotsandcuts Rad Power bike, we were told it didn’t qualify for coverage because it had a throttle and was therefore, a vehicle that needed to be ensured separately.

something we were not told when we bought the policy even though we explicitly inquired about “bikes” and we’re told that yes, they were covered.

so if you have a bike, and you think it’s insured under a renters or home owners policy, maybe check just in case.

we had a pretty miserable time hiking Tomales Point Trail yesterday: actually turned around at the 1-mile mark and went elsewhere.

it was absolutely mobbed with people who had absolutely zero trail etiquette: shoving and refusing to go single file on narrow trails when hiking in a big group. one man literally collided with me: he just wouldn’t let go of his girlfriend’s hand.

but the worst by far are the people who bring a portable speaker and play loud music as they hike. why are you here?! you’re in a literal nature preserve for an endangered species. if you want to have music vibes go hang out in Dolores.

you don’t have to hike how I hike, but when your actions negatively impact other people and the nature you came to see, you’ve crossed the line into being a nuisance.

and of course, the parking lot was packed with Teslas. so I’m working on Enia’s theorem which is that the level of trail etiquette is inversely proportional to the ratio of brand new Teslas to beatup Subarus at the trailhead.

something that often gets missed in the conversation is how the quality of their service compares to which largely uses “contractor” labor for last mile delivery.

I just got a message from FedEx that they couldn’t deliver my package because no one was home.

spoiler alert: I was home. I even went downstairs to see if I could chase down the truck and there was no truck, no notice on the door that they came by.

and this only happens with FedEx. meanwhile I’ve had UPS guys go way above and beyond to get me my stuff. surprise surprise: when you pay people well, they do a good job.

but of course, retailers rarely take customer experience into consideration when picking shippers. because what they care about is getting my money for the product, not how much effort I have to put in to chase down my package.

somewhere down the line they might calculate the cost of customer service addressing missed packages but that takes years to show up in the financials.

Well, this is a fun email to get: when AQI hits > 150, @sfpubliclibrary will activate its emergency plan which requires closure of the majority of neighborhood library branches which “lack advanced mechanical ventilation systems.”

only the following branches will remain open: Main Library, Chinatown, Excelsior, Mission Bay, Ocean View, Ortega, Potrero, Richmond, Visitacion Valley and West Portal.

Main Library, Chinatown and Mission Bay will also act as Air Respite Centers.

Well, we’re not crazy: aggressive driving has gotten worse, since the beginning of the pandemic, and it’s causing more deaths than it has in 15 years (gift link below)

“One clue lies in a sweeping annual survey commissioned by the American Psychological Association to explore what the authors call “the psychological impacts of a collective trauma” from the pandemic, “global conflicts, racism and racial injustice, inflation and climate-related disasters.” …

The problem today, in the United States, may be that we’re all baseline angry and anxious — and we’re all in a car, all the time. Or what feels like it, anyway. Outside the few fully walkable cities or the ones with reliable public transportation, most communities require a car to traverse.”

this is Frankie. She lives in the Tenderloin but escaped from a sitter at 35th and Judah while her Mom was away.

There’s been a sighting in South SF/Colma/Daly City. If you see her, please text Julie at the number on the flyer.

Please don’t try to chase her or catch her yourself.

This is shocking - particularly when you think back to when librarians were so excellent about resisting requests for lists of borrowed titles a decade or two ago.

This should be raised immediately - in very firm tones - with SF Public Library

@christa @nwchapman Overdrive / Libby was sold to a private equity firm in 2020 which is when all of these problematic data monetization practices took hold.

They also recently bought Simon & Schuster.

The concentration of market power in book publishing/selling/delivering is really really scary. It’s one of the reasons I started borrowing paper books and buying ones that I want to continue having access to, even though I really hate having overstuffed shelves.

OK. So. I don’t have any pictures because I was having The Experience, but! I went kayaking with a friend, and it was her first time, and we met a seal! He peeked his head out of the water like 20 ft from us and watched us paddle by as we waved.

no one takes Muni, definitely no need to increase service.

Also no one walks / takes Muni in West Portal, if we close the street, stores and small businesses will definitely see a drop in business and will close

This is 52.

Despite — well, everything in this sad, crumbling year; the background noise of a world falling apart — I think my thirteen-year-old self would be so surprised at where I ended up after all this time. As a young queer growing up in the 80s, I had no sense that it was possible to reach this age. (Hard to convey just how pervasive this was.)

I’ve spent my life working with kids, and outside of that I do believe that that finding and creating moments of queer joy is a revolutionary act in the face of oncoming fascism.

So I’m looking forward to a great dinner tonight at a restaurant that Tina and I love. This weekend I’ve got book club — always a treat — and some theater. So I’m going to play my little playlist of Maggie Rogers, Chappell Roan, girl in red, and (yes) Beyoncé and get ready for all the day offers.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but basically every Sunday there’s a different kind of dog meetup in Stern Grove and yesterday’s was SF Weens aka a literal sausage party.

Chihuahuas meet up on the first Sunday of the month, and you’d think it’d be chaotic (I’ve counted as many as 100 in attendance at once) but they’re very calm and well behaved when they’re with their own kind.

If you love dogs but are currently dogfree by like me (because Reasons aka Banana), this is an incredible opportunity to meet very many of them and enjoy a nice day in one of our most beautiful public parks. Or bring your own dog, if you happen to be so lucky.
