"It's a dangerous thing to mistake speaking without thought for speaking the truth." Fan of #crows, #StarTrek and the #Japanese language, among many other things. Currently posting one frog species per day. If I keep this up, I should be done in about 20 years. My toots are searchable.
Today's #Wordle broke my streak, but I can't figure out what I could have done better. Is Wordle purely a game of skill, or is it possible to lose, no matter how well you play, because you're just unlucky?
@barstep Coders on the internet claim they've created applications that can find any word from the official Wordle list within 6 moves, even on hard mode.
@halas@ohne_sonne "Despite falling short of his financial goal, Black said his journey showcased the power of determination and the importance of health and family"
How does being a quitter and a loser showcase the power of determination?
We already have 1,000 would-be Mozarts who instead of learning music and honing their skills are doing shit jobs for shit wages. They're spending their time just surviving instead of blessing the rest of us with music we'd love.
@scottsantens "I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops." --Stephen Jay Gould
A friend of mine at King's College London invites you to take part in a knowledge test. I did it already, it was a lot of fun and very educational. Enjoy!
@rustoleumlove My friend responds, "Mutant! Either knows too much or is very much in tune with their own ignorance." 😆 Wants to know if you used huge ranges.
@rustoleumlove Huge range would be: "The Chinese Wall? I have no idea, but it must surely be more than 1 km, and less than 100,000 km." Basically acting like you're asked for a 100% confidence range. Doesn't sound like you used those, so that puts you in the "knows too much" (aka highly intelligent) category.
@memes There's a possibility that the author eloquently and convincingly explains why this is not the contradiction we think it is, but unfortunately we will never know.
#frogs Many-lined tree frog (Dendropsophus haraldschultzi) photographed by John Sullivan. Presumably, this frog is named after someone called Harald Schultz, but if you google that name in English Wikipedia or in Portuguese Wikipedia you get wildly different results. English: "Harald Schultz (1895-1957) was a German general during World War II." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harald_Schultz
Portuguese: "Harald Schultz (1909-1966) was a translator, ichthyologist, ethnographer and photographer." https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harald_Schultz
@b_age I never realized Harald is such a common name in Germany. Also, I used to have a colleague who shared a name with a child molester. Imagine what that does to your social media presence, or how it works against you when looking for a job. "Let's just google this guy--- WHAT THE--!"
I just discovered and watched the beautiful 10-episode miniseries "Station Eleven," based on the 2014 novel by Emily St. John Mandel, which I haven't read yet, but will.
It's the story of a worldwide pandemic that wipes out most of humanity, and the unexpected ways in which the lives of some of its survivors intertwine.
It's also about the importance of art and culture in the post-pandemic world, from the performing arts to a comic book.
#foodtoot Courtesy of the Washington Post, this is one of those recipes that's "make pasta, drain, add cold ingredients."
Boil water for pasta. In a bowl, mix: juice & zest of 1/2 a lemon; 2.5 tbsp extra virgin olive oil; 1 tbsp anchovy paste; 1/3 cup halved, stoned kalamata olives; ground pepper.
Halve 250g cherry tomatoes and remove the seeds.
Chop enough red onion to get 2 tbsps' worth. Pick a small handful of basil leaves.
Boil 250g orecchiette. Drain. Mix with cold ingredients. Serve.
