I think it's really great that @Vivaldi is doing the mastodon thing, it shows that vivaldi is "all about the community"

It also helps with getting in touch with the team and even the CEO, the incredible @jon

I also enjoy accounts like @tips , that are tooting tips about this great software each day

@Vivaldi is also a great way to get information about updates, and you can also discuss new features

@Vivaldi @toran
Too bad

Having some of the vivaldi features (calendar/mail/RSS and notes) as separate, installable programs and apps, with sync and all of that, would be a great idea

Especially notes would be great to have on mobile, where many people (cough @thelinuxcast cough) have a hard time finding a decent note-taking software with good sync

Could also make it easier for you to make more parts open source

If you made mail/RSS/calendar available standalone, it could honestly rival thunderbird
(Which is cool for such a young feature)

It could make it slightly easier to migrate, and could make it easier to introduce people to vivaldi, without making it necessary for people to switch browsers if they "don't like change" (even though it's easy to make vivaldi look "just like chrome")

Of course I don't think you should remove those features from the browser itself (no one wants what happened to Firefox/thunderbird to happen to vivaldi)

🦋 If you struggle with ADHD or have your focus constantly ruined by a whirlwind of thoughts, then you probably use productivity tools that can help crush those distractions and give you some peace of mind.

Find out how you can say goodbye to those scattered thoughts by customizing the Vivaldi browser to work for your needs and preferences 👇🏻

Probably when browsers changes the URL I've typed for a slightly different one (adding/removing the protocol and things like that), really annoying when opening locally selfhosted services

erilun06,
@erilun06@vivaldi.net avatar

@Vivaldi I usually don't look too much at the suggestions, I either know where I want to go, or I do a search (or I use one of my custom search engines, like @alternativeto (aliased as "alt ") )

How to get Firefox (and windows) to work with me not against me (I am not allowed to use Vivaldi at work, and it's super annoying) without add-ons

At least I found the global colour replacement option in settings so I could not get blinded by the lightmode

@Vivaldi@vivaldi.net avatar

Should we commit to using the latest trend in AI—Large language models— or LLMs? No, we won't.

This current AI trend comes with a list of limitations and challenges.

For starters, LLMs are complex and resource-intensive. The energy needed to train and operate these models is excessive and could potentially harm the environment.

For more reasons to question the use of AI, read further to understand its practical, ethical, and technical drawbacks.

@Vivaldi @julien_picalausa
Thank you for not supportig open plagiarism,
and in the case of code-optimized models,like gitHub-copilot, people breaking the license of the code in the training data, without even knowing it because it removes/ignores/forgets the headers while training

on that note, I would be cool with a locally running model that is trained on my own code, except that´s just a snippet/template engine/system, which is something ive had for a long time

jon, to windows
@jon@vivaldi.net avatar

Microsoft has managed to convince the EU that nobody uses Edge and that thus Edge does not need to be designated as a gatekeeper. 😒

Microsoft points at StatCounter, an unreliable source of information, which Microsoft blocks access to in strict mode, based on our research.

Windows is still designated as a gatekeeper, as it should, but not designating Edge opens up a hole in the regulation.

I guess some of you may find this funny and think that it is kind of true that nobody uses Edge, but sadly that is not the truth. A lot of people are forced to use Edge.

I would urge you all to uninstall Edge from Windows when that is possible and make Microsoft's utter nonsense become the truth!

Then you can install @Vivaldi, if you have not done so!😀

erilun06,
@erilun06@vivaldi.net avatar

@jon @Vivaldi

This is so true

At my work, the only browser that in able to install is Firefox

So I get to choose between Firefox and edge

Ofcourse I'm sticking with Firefox but vivaldi would have solved a ton of problems

One thing I would love to see is an official(play-store)Android-tv build with good support for navigation with the remote (like jumping between clickables (links/buttons) using the arrows, similar to how many terminal based browsers work with tab/shift-tab)

Or maybe a way to control the (TV)browser with a phone, tablet or computer

erilun06,
@erilun06@vivaldi.net avatar

@Vivaldi
One thing I would love to have is a separate phone-app for Vivaldi-notes, and a port of the email/RSS-client/reader for mobile too, would probably blow thunderbird/K-9 out of the water

erilun06,

@thelinuxcast
I think it's pretty cool

It makes it feel that Linux is finally an obvious thing in the gaming world, or at least the best/easiest way to get the job done

To me, the next step is a new edition of the Linux challenge, maybe with both of them using KDE, or something like holo-ISO or some other gaming focused distro(or even steamos once valve releases it)

Maybe having them get tips from the Linux community on YouTube whenever needed

So I switch back and forth between Qtile and Plasma. My biggest issue with doing that is that Vivaldi loses my cookies every time I switch back to qtile. I have to sign into everything again.

They use different keychains, that's the issue. IDK if it would be worthwhile to get them to use the same one or not.

erilun06,
@erilun06@vivaldi.net avatar

@thelinuxcast
im happy to read that you are using @Vivaldi,

im using awesomewm myself but I also use the vivaldi sync features, and a password manager and I dont swap windowmanagers,
making them use the same keychain shouldn`t be far too hard, right(?)
although you would think you would only need to do it once on each if its the keychain

btw, what are your thoughts on @Vivaldi at this point? are you enjoying it? did you manage to solve the window-decoration issue you had?

(foss) software recommendation:
there is a plugin for firefox that allows for creating web "apps"(progressive web apps).
it works quite well for things like youtube, browsing github and even viewing https://social.vivaldi.net

the upside to using it over the chromium ones is that I can have separate settings and all of that while still having the thing look somewhat "Linux native"

and the whole config is stored as JSON, so you can put it on git, or fix issues easily

https://github.com/filips123/PWAsForFirefox

erilun06,
@erilun06@vivaldi.net avatar

to be clear
im still using @Vivaldi as my main browser, and the recently added workspace features have made it even better but some things I prefer having in its own instance

although if there was a version for @Vivaldi I would absolutely use that instead

erilun06,
@erilun06@vivaldi.net avatar

@Vivaldi and that probably works great, unless you are using a tilling Window-manager (like awesome-wm) on Linux, which I am

in that case, it will end up showing the
minimise (_)
maximise ([ ])
and close (X)
buttons, either in a way that looks completely out of place, or it will have them twice as the window-manager might have them too
it will also start out in full-screen & on-top mode unless you add a rule in the wm config

this is not the fault of @Vivaldi but rather its chromium`s fault

Vim folds are the worst part about vim.

erilun06,
@erilun06@vivaldi.net avatar

@thelinuxcast
I personally use Emacs, but I have it configured so that I can fold "sections" defined using my preferred language`s commenting syntax, which allows me to have nested headings as it allows for multi-character comment-syntax
;;; some text <--first heading
;;;; some more info <-- sub-heading
;; regular comment
(print "hello world");end of line comment.
it does help that the standard in lisp is to have triple ";" comments as a sort of heading anyway(1/2)
