Shoutout to all of the contributors to SourceGraph whose work was just made closed source, big thanks to SourceGraph for pissing on them, I'm sure they really appreciate it. All those users who thought your FOSS product was really cool surely still think your product is super cool now that you've taken their rights away

federico3,

@dalias @drewdevault I would have no problem with a CLA that only allows the original authors to change license from LGPL to GPL to AGPL, or update to newer versions of the *GPLs.

federico3,

@valhalla @drewdevault @dalias No, it would provide additional flexibility for the original author - for example deciding if and when to switch the entire codebase from GPLv2-only to GPLv3-only and perhaps v4 in future.

as some of you know, i'm writing a decentralized reddit-like, not- server/web client called .

i'm at the stage where i need to make some decisions about how discussion groups are organized on the network, and i'd like your thoughts.

an open question for , and users of yore:

  1. do you prefer nntp's hierarchical tree-style format for groups, e.g. alt.binaries.warez.ibm.pc.old, or reddit's flat organization of /r/mysubreddit? how about fidonet-style?

  2. what's a reasonable character limit on group names? e.g. reddit enforces a 21 character limit on subreddit titles.

federico3,

@vga256 Usenet-style please as they organize neatly.

federico3,

@vga256 Is there a repository? Would you like feedback on architecture perhaps?

federico3,

@vga256 @hook Hierarchical names provide context, for example groups about cats would host different conversations across funny.images.cats, sci.zoology.cats and pets.cats
Whole subtrees could be used to distinguish forums for serious discussion from the ones for memes and jokes.
Just like usenet, some instances would choose to ingest/follow only some subtrees, e.g. in a professional or scientific environment.

I was thinking of migrating to fosstodon.org but it's not on https://fedipact.online/ - any suggestion?

Instead of complaining about app developers and Flatpak, maybe it's time Linux based OS developers focus on moving forward with things they are responsible for:

  • Home encryption
  • Authenticated boot
  • Read-only /
  • Atomic upgrades

It's 2023 and I still can't install and leave Linux unattended to family members and friends.

Flatpak solves real problem and it only gets better with time because it is the right infrastructure for apps on Linux.

#Flatpak #Linux

federico3,

@sonny Home encryption, secure boot, read only root and so on existed for decades. No, it's indeed time to complain about Flatpak and similar bundle/container based software distribution systems how they are harming the FOSS ecosystem.

federico3,

@sonny They work well. Besides, they often solve problems that are not really crucial for most users.

Is there a federated Reddit alternative yet that is getting traction? With Reddit following Twitter, now might be the time for a migration :).

federico3,

@selea @js Lemmy is not really federated and is not getting significant traction.

federico3,

@selea That's how it's been designed. Communities are local to each server and posts are not automatically replicated across servers, unlike #NNTP.

“Haha lol banks use 60 year old programming languages!”

Yes, young whippersnapper, that’s because they need things to be reliable and not change all the time, the code probably has to run for another 60 years.

“Modern” devs could learn a lot from not trying chase every trendy new framework and every shiny new programming language.

"Towards a Modern Web Stack"

This is interesting.

Ian "Hixie" Hickson editor of HTML specification for 10 years, in January 2023 criticises the use of , , for intricate applications, and proposes an alternate approach based on 4 lower-level :

  1. (for )

Gets criticised for it and defends his proposal on HN: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34612696

federico3,

@smallcircles
Replacing bloated, vulnerable and messy webapps with... blobs of binary code? Sounds like a security nightmare and it would make it very difficult to block tracking and ads.

federico3,

@smallcircles In practice none of this solves the real privacy and security problems for the end user.

@fediverse What type of social media do you feel is lacking most in the fediverse?

To elaborate, there are a lot of different types of social media already on the fediverse such as microblogs, regular blogs, image sharing, link sharing and video sharing.

Personally, I'd love to see a gaming-focused social media platform on the fediverse.
