I'm always kinda surprised that Factorio is so popular with developers, given that it's basically "technical debt, the game!"

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

bad idea:
I'm gonna get some other devops and we're gonna play a longform factorio multiplayer game together.
we're going to have a jira, proper change management, daily standups, multipart epics to track our long-term deliverables, and set up pagerduty so that we can be alerted when there's a biter attack that needs immediate attention.

I wonder: if you showed IBM executives what happens with the PC, would they still greenlight it?

Because they lost control of it pretty quick (the IBM PS/2 was a failed attempt to get control back, and that was only 6 years on) and then from then on they were only one fish in an increasingly bigger pond. And then PC-likes took over the workstation/server markets too, so their minicomputers and mainframes lost a lot too

I guess it's a good thing the entire CI/packaging infrastructure got compromised... A good thing for my job hunt at least!
CI is my bread and butter. Y'all are gonna need to hire a bunch of people to better maintain your whole software delivery system... People like me!

Is there an existing project to convert a USB keyboard/mouse to PS/2?

Like, I've got a USB KVM, and I'd love to plug an old computer into it, one that's pre-USB.

(this is a thing that's annoying to google)

I am personally offended that you can't make programs in Visual Basic 6 anymore without them getting flagged as viruses.
That's like being scared of Legos

I was looking on thingiverse to see if anyone had designed a cassette tape rewinder model that I could abuse to let me rewind my endless-loop cassette, and I didn't find it, but I DID find an adapter someone made to let you rewind your CDs/DVDs with a pen. Very handy!

friendly reminder to WIPE YOUR MEDIA.
I just got handed a floppy disk my roommate pulled out some weird device at e-waste, and I imaged it.

My Pocket 386 arrived! It seems to have basically the same specs as the Hand386, but in a laptop form factor. There's a few new options for managing the video, and the built-in screen isn't as horribly shit this time.

It seems weird to describe myself as having ADHD, because that implies a much greater storage capacity than my brain really has. In no way am I "high density".

I'm ADDD (double density) at best, and I fear I may really be ADSD (single density).

why share your screen over finnicky wifi video streaming protocols, when you can just broadcast NTSC TV signals for any local CRT TV to pick up?

For a meeting I asked the "getting to know you" question of "what fictional world would you like to visit?"
My wife overheard my answer of "Star Trek: the sickbay. Ever since I was a kid I wanted someone to wave a beepy thing over me and figure out exactly what was wrong and know how to fix it" and she suggested I could have instead answered one of the worlds of my favorite author, what's his name? Charles Stross?

No. No, he's not that kind of author. I don't want to visit any of those.

So Tumblr has been doing a thing where they have a Scarlett Letter to mark trans women. Well, any blogs containing "too much" mature content, but that seems to mainly mean trans women. So I looked into it, and it turns out it's weird and broken.

So I saw some people saying that supposedly GTA 6 might cost 150$, and how this is ridiculous.

So I opened up my Byte to 1982.
Hey look: Odesta Chess for the Apple II and Atari 8-bits:70$.

With inflation, that's 220$

Working in tech while trans is often a very weird experience because the associations you have with various organizations are constantly proven to be not be universal.

Like you'll be talking to someone who is implementing a auth system with the company that protected a site with a known death toll, and when you had gently suggested on your Twitter that they stop protecting that site, you got doxxed and death threats.

Or your boss suggests we buy a tool from a site that doxxed a friend.

installing arch is fun. and I mean specifically the kind of fun I had back in 2002 when I had a slackware ISO and nothing better to do with my time

foone, (edited )

I think Arch may be a Linux for people who:

  1. hate Computers, and
  2. hate the idea of people using Computers.
foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

I think the arch install guide may have been written by that guy who wrote the bomb defusal manual used on MAS*H.

"remove the tail assembly, and carefully cut the wires leading to the clockwork fuse at the head"
next page
"but first, remove the fuse"
