I do stuff until I don't. Computer guy, but I can't fix printers.
I spent most of my day spelling mastodon wrong.

@thelinuxEXP I've seen that you made a video about private search engines a while ago. Unfortunately it's missing one that I'm currently interested in called Kagi. Have you tried that one out since then? I've heard good things about it despite its price being somewhat on the higher end. Became relevant for me because of the neeva news. Would be interested in your thoughts on it.

Well if it isn't cryptocurrency spam coming from the biggest, open instance on the . 👀

I wonder if this is at all related to challenges with moderating an instance of checks notes 200k active accounts? Or with moderating new accounts on the only instance actively promoted in the official apps? :thinking_rotate:

Thankfully we can always defederate! What's that? It's the biggest instance so there are real concerns about a lot of people losing connections? Whodda thunk it!

furbyonsteroids,

@rysiek
Instantly defederating from an instance because of a spam attack isn't a solution either. Give people time to react. If they fail to react within a reasonable time or the attack is too big, then yea. Defederate. But defederation should be one of the last resorts. Nobody wants to create instances if they constantly have to be scared to be defederated whenever someone whines about them not reacting in 500ms if a bad message appears.

furbyonsteroids,

@rysiek
I honestly don't want to know how many small instances were collectively blocked because of some petty reason.

furbyonsteroids,

Only if the reason of defederation does not actually warrant a defederation. If mastodon.social suddenly promoted nazi content or whatever there would be no doubt that it needs to be defederated no matter how big it is. (Look at pawoo.net, which has apparently over 800.000 members). Defederation (esp. collectively via fediblock etc) is a nuclear option that shouldn't be used for petty reasons. It has huge implications for those instances.. basically death.

Somehow I installed to require 3 passwords.. one for decrypting grub, one for decrypting the system and one to actually log in. I have no idea how I did that and idk if i should find that cool or annoying. Yes, the idea was to encrypt my drive, which would result in 2 passwords.. but 3? Idk man..

But then again, I kinda don't want to reinstall again.

Thinking hard about closing down home.social. Moderation is becoming a nightmare. "Inter-instance-wars", too. Plus: Large instances might ultimately not be a good idea to begin with and defy the entire purpose of a fediverse.

furbyonsteroids,

@ralf
"Closing down" as in no new sign-ups or as in "shutting down" since the former won't fix the moderation issue unless this mostly refers to "new sign up moderation". Also, inter-instance-wars? Like "my instance is better than yours" or something else? I would argue since mastodon.social became the defacto default instance for new users, having several somewhat chunkier instances is still valuable to have. Compared to having one huge instance and the rest being tiny.

furbyonsteroids, to programming

So, testing the . I want it to rewrite a code snippet from using a switch statement to an if statement. Literally just to test it. And it's generating.. it's generating... It's generating. You can see the code being generated in front of your eyes in real time. Still generating.. almost done... Aaaand d--
Bing deletes everything and tells me it can't do that.

What do you mean? You literally just did it?!

furbyonsteroids,

@arnandegans
Disagree. Writing boilerplate code is a fraction of what programming is about. Most IDEs already let you fully generate major code blocks and it hasn't replaced me yet.
You also gotta understand how the code works, why you have to do it that way and how to tie it together in a flexible and maintainable way among many other things.
While I'm not particularly fond of it and the players in that field, fully rejecting it because "it'll change how we do things" is not a mindset I share.

So, this is a big deal.

The Verge: ’s setting up shop on Mastodon and trying to reinvent content moderation >>> https://www.theverge.com/23710406/mozilla-social-mastodon-fediverse-moderation

"It’s a social network that doesn’t try to be neutral and isn’t attempting to preserve free speech. It’s trying to make the internet a nicer place to be."

"Mozilla’s content policies also make clear that the platform will err on the side of protecting people who need to be protected..."

furbyonsteroids,

@mastodonmigration
What I'm curious about is how they'll handle instances that don't use this strict approach. Will they just defederate from 90% of the instances? Example: on mastodon.social someone simply talks about how much they enjoy playing a controversial wizard game, which afaik, is allowed on there. Now some do believe that the game represents certain views or whatever. Will they now defederate mastodon.social? Because if so, that'll become rather quiet.

furbyonsteroids,

@fribbledom
Afaik bluesky advertises itself with "no moderation" or whatever. Which, afaik, is not compliant with the NetzDG, which requires moderation of hate speech and illegal content. So at least in Germany (and maybe the EU, idk if they also have a similar law) it seems like bluesky would not be able to do business. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Adding an easy way to create a Mastodon account on mastodon.social to the official app? Yes, please.

I don’t understand the drama around this. Not like it’s removing other instances, or the ability to switch instances afterwards. It just gives an easier way in for people who don’t understand the instances concept.

It’s a good thing. Anything that helps onboarding is a good thing, and no, it doesn’t mean the developer has gone evil or wants to centralize things. 🙄🙄

furbyonsteroids,

@thelinuxEXP
Agreed. Onboarding is the number 1 issue of mastodon right now (followed by search and discoverability), and the potential downside of one instance becoming too big is well worth it imo. What's gonna happen? They gonna lock down mastodon.social so people can't leave? Please... It makes no sense. It also solves the issue of "nothing on my timeline so it's dead" dilemma.

furbyonsteroids, to random

NoooooOOOO the birdsite killed fritter. The app that allowed you to keep track of tweets anonymously and without an account. That was my only way to keep track of certain accounts that won't or can't move. Well, that'll hurt but what can you do. Gotta learn to live without those accounts.

While annoying, I'll be just fine.

furbyonsteroids,

@arnandegans
That's so inconvenient I'd rather just miss the tweets. Thanks for the suggestion though.

furbyonsteroids,

@arnandegans
Does that even work with the API changes? Not gonna pay for that. I may enjoy those certain accounts, but absolutely not enough to pay for it. Regardless, it's a possible solution so I appreciate it a lot!

furbyonsteroids,

@arnandegans
Yea according to the code it's using the API. I know there's a free tier even for reading , but it's heavily limited last I checked and it would require me to create an account and stuff.. and that's a lot

I'm sure you can tell that while I'm interested in these accounts, not enough to actually put a lot of effort into it. And creating an account is a lot of effort... relative to the result anyway.

furbyonsteroids,

@arnandegans
Hmm.. it does mention api.twitter.com, but perhaps that's for using search instead of user timelines. I'll investigate that. Thanks for recommending!
