Montrose Search and Rescue: "Today, our team responded to a vehicle over the side call on Angeles Forest Hwy at MM 19.36. The vehicle was about 300' over the side. By the time our unit arrived on scene, the patient had self-extricated and was on the roadway. The roadway was wet and slick. This weekend, we have had two other weather-related calls. One hiker was suffering from exposure in the snow and two cyclists needed to be rewarmed by us. When the weather is excessively cold, hot, windy, rainy, etc, please reconsider your plans to visit the wilderness. "

@ai6yr this morning in Fremont, we had a 911 call from Mission Peak (Alameda County), someone who was apparently injured too badly to walk the muddy trail. Turns out they were simply mired, it was too muddy to walk. The ATVs they sent from two different directions couldn't deal with the mud. The helicopter couldn't land close enough. I should probably look for an update, I have no idea how they got down. But I'm thinking hikers should turn around as soon as the mud seems to be a bit much.

@ai6yr they're okay, were extricated by helicopter. This involved more than two hours, three Fremont fire engine companies, a battalion chief, and the East bay regional park district helicopter and crew.

Please don't go hiking when the trails are that muddy. Turn around and go back.

@croyle @mjausson @ai6yr look at all that lovely unshaded trail!

@croyle @mjausson @ai6yr I'd go from the east side or not at all. There are lovely hiking trails all over the east bay, no need to climb that one. (Even if I could anymore, but I can't. )

“The linguistic evidence is consistent with two population strata defined by early coastal entries ~24,000 and ~15,000 years ago, then an inland entry stream beginning ~14,000 ff. and mixed coastal/inland ~12,000 ff. The dominant structural properties among the founder languages are still reflected in the modern linguistic populations” https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ajpa.24923

Word pairings I would give a lot never to encounter again include "Musk says", "Trump claims" I'm sure there are others but those are the biggies.

Imagine someone telling you that due to a law from 1864, you have to risk your life during pregnancy even though it’s 2024, and medicine has advanced to solve that potential problem.

Mastodon and Threads both completely missing trending story of the in Taiwan. Twitter (RIP) has Tsunami as top trending right now so it is still close. Bsky actually sort of does the worst in that there is no trending section and the best in the sense that at least there is a public bot that shows trending topics and has the earthquake, not just tsunami, as the hot topics https://bsky.app/profile/nowbreezing.ntw.app

I really, really want the fediverse to be better at breaking

@densaer between tropical diseases spreading, and covid-related disabilities, we'd best be getting ready for serious long-term public health crises.

Coastal dunes are retreating as sea levels rise - our research reveals the accelerating rate of change

In some parts of Australia, coastal dunes are retreating from the ocean at an alarming rate, as waves carve up the beach and wind blows the sand inland. But coastal communities are largely oblivious to the changes.

@ebender00 and in so many places we try to stop that retreat because of our own infrastructure. What a mess.
